In 2003, the General Accounting Office (GAO) issued a report warning that the
U.S. was entering a new era of water scarcity. The report projected that by
2013 at least 36 states could face water shortages.
However, the report was incorrect. By 2008, five years earlier than projected,
at least 36 states were already dealing with periodic, if not chronic, water
shortages with California, New Mexico, and Arizona at the top of the list.
Klaus Reichardt, CEO and founder of Waterless Co., makers of no-water urinal
systems and other restroom-related products, predicts that while there is some
good news, water scarcity and related-water concerns will likely become
paramount issues in 2013.

Integrating Automatic Fire Sprinkler Systems
with Rainwater Catchment
By Bob Boulware
President, Design-Aire Engineering, Inc. & ARCSA Member, CA, AP & IS
Rainwater catchment is commonly thought of as
applicable to remote buildings located on the fringes of
civilization. Such is not the case for buildings located in
the cities of the Virgin Islands, Bermuda, and island
locations in general. Here, historic buildings are often
clustered together and fire protection is necessary to
avoid major fires and disaster. Typical of these locations
is a limitation of available water to fight a building fire.
Utilizing rainwater catchment, to provide the water for
fire suppression sprinkler systems to operate, may offer a
solution to the need.

Call for Vendor Videos!
ARCSA is requesting educational videos from our business members. We
are looking for videos that will help train members on the technical aspect of
the equipment offered by our business members. The videos need to be a
maximum of 45 minutes and will be offered on our website for free to the
public and at a nominal price for gaining CEUs.
Contact Jack Holmgreen at [email protected] to reserve your slot
for a 2013 educational video. Space is going fast, so do not delay!
Spotlight on Water.org
The water scarcity and sanitation
problem across the world is growing
rapidly, leaving many without clean
water to drink. Water.org, a nonprofit
organization founded by Matt Damon
and Gary White, is using microfinance
and new solutions like Rainwater
Harvesting to increase access to safe
water across Africa, Central America and
South Asia. Their vision is simple: the
day when everyone in the world can
take a safe drink of water.
