LOWER COLUMBIA
CLASSIC CAR CLUB 1
MARCH 2016
Everyone can attest to having
too much on our plates. Some
days we have many irons in the
fire.. I will have to say, I think
this is the way it is with Fred
Mestrich lately. This is the last
article needed to complete this
month’s “Backfire Newsletter” I
called Fred to ask if he has a
“From the Prez” article. Well, it
was like asking for something
that was the farthest thing from
his mind. It didn't take much to
figure out the reason for this.
Fred Mestrich has a full time
business to run which is very
time consuming to say the
least. Fred was the Chairmen for
the just completed Swap Meet
this last week-end. Fred told me
he was happy with the results of
the Swap Meet. We had filled
more vendor spaces, and feed-
back has been positive. Our
club booth sold many smaller
items, and yet got rid of most of
the stock that was carried over
from last year. Our club representation table with Steve Jordan as our primary spokesman
said he was pleased with the responses and gave out more
than 25 of his self-created coloring books. I’m sure Fred will be
glad to receive your input on
your comments of the Swap
Meet. Now that the Swap Meet
is over, lets focus our attention
to the 50’s Cruise Reunion coming up next month April 23th
2016

Welcome to new members Doug and Kathy Perry.
Darryl and Barb's grandson passed away. We would like to give condolences for their loss.
Sue Stunkard was hospitalized, but is now doing better.
Ross will be having surgery on Friday the 11th. We wish him well.
The swap meet is doing well. We have rented 60 of 120 available spaces. Fred was able to save 150 dollars
on the rental for the fairgrounds with on air auction. Concessions will have breakfast ready by 7am. We need help Friday the 11th at 1pm to take club booth items to fairgrounds. If you are available, please get in touch with Fred.
We got confirmation from Camp Rilea for the 50's cruise. We will be moving forward with fliers. We are still
working on the color for the graphics on the t shirts. Would like any ideas for games and/or entertainment for the 50's
cruise.
Oliver talked with the college instructor. He said they can use an oscilloscope for the automotive class. The
request was approved and will be ordered.
Judy has set up regular reporters for the newsletter. Please send your articles in as well.
The website is being updated constantly. Please take a look at it. If you have any ideas let Ross know. Please
send any updated photos of your cars or cars in process.
The Warrenton High School Auto Club is doing well. The school board is being very helpful.
Steve is working on a children's coloring book promotional for the swap meet and the 50's cruise. They are
very cute.
There is a car show at the end of July in Grants Pass. Anyone wishing to attend please get in touch with Jeff
Penual.
Meeting was adjourned at 7:45pm. The attendance winner was Patty Getchell.
Secretary Margot Gittins.

Ramblin Round
Almost “Astoria Swap Meet” time and I’m wondering
how it got to that time of year so quickly! By the time
you get this, I am sure that the swap meet will be history and many of us will be worn out but made happy
by it. Many members have donated a whole litany of
items to be sold by the club at its booth, a big help in
offsetting the costs of the event. Thank You!

door post - in pieces, so he’s going to be at it for quite
a while. Darryl plans on putting the car together as
stock as possible and right now he’s inventorying
parts—just to see if he has it all.
Fred Mestrich is building a 4 door `56 Chevrolet and
we are all waiting to see what all he plans to do to
this one.

Ross Getchell’s `56 Crown Vic will undergo some major body and paint repairs, following an accident at his
shop. While working on the vehicle, it jumped into reverse and exited the shop, taking Ross with it. We
and Ross are extremely lucky - he suffered only minimal bruises in what could have been disastrous.

My own “restoration from hell” project as it’s become
known, has forced me to once more remove the
“remanufactured” transmission. This will be its third
time out of the car for a trip back to the transmission
shop. At this point I’m not sure where the problem is,
but it sounds like a bearing is going out in the converter somewhere as its noisy when under load (in gear).
Ah, the joys of the “old car hobby”.
Doug & Dorothy Gillies have been working on their
`77 Corvette project for the past several years and
recently decided to renew their efforts. The gage cluster and dash are now back together and they have
acquired all interior parts. The next step will be to get
a temporary seat installed so that it can be driven to a
body shop for a complete repaint.
