December 2014 WWW.BETHANY-VILLAGE.ORG The Gold Wrapping Paper Once upon a time, there was a man who worked very hard just to keep food on the table for his family. This particular year a few days before Christmas, he punished his little five-year-old daughter after learning that she had used up the family's only roll of expensive gold wrapping paper. As money was tight, he became even more upset when on Christmas Eve he saw that the child had used all of the expensive gold paper to decorate one shoebox she had put under the Christmas tree. He also was concerned about where she had gotten money to buy what was in the shoebox. Nevertheless, the next morning the little girl, filled with excitement, brought the gift box to her father and said, "This is for you, Daddy!" As he opened the box, the father was embarrassed by his earlier overreaction, now regretting how he had punished her. But when he opened the shoebox, he found it was empty and again his anger flared. "Don't you know, young lady," he said harshly, "when you give someone a present, there's supposed to be something inside the package!" The little girl looked up at him with sad tears rolling from her eyes and whispered: "Daddy, it's not empty. I blew kisses into it until it was all full." The father was crushed. He fell on his knees and put his arms around his precious little girl. He begged her to forgive him for his unnecessary anger. An accident took the life of the child only a short time later. It is told that the father kept this little gold box by his bed for all the years of his life. Whenever he was discouraged or faced difficult problems, he would open the box, take out an imaginary kiss, and remember the love of this beautiful child who had put it there. In a very real sense, each of us has been given an invisible golden box filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family, friends. There is no more precious possession anyone could hold. I Wish I Could Wrap Up Christmas I wish that I could wrap up all the love and Holiday cheer That comes along with Christmas and with New Year's every year, Pack it in a pretty box and put it on my shelf And pull it down again each year and give it to myself. I wish that I could tie up all my favorite carols with twine, Wind around some ribbon, too, and for twelve months call them mine Until the next Yuletide came when the sounds again could be unfurled And untie every single one then give them to the world December 2014 Veterans Day The Manor The Courtyards Ken Thompson receiving his certificate of honor and Veteran pin from Pastor Jim Radford & Ginny Donald Wood receiving his certificate of honor and Veteran pin from Pastor Jim Radford & Ginny A Memory table to honor Veterans of residents that have passed Jim Neish receiving his gratitude of thanks with a boutonniere from Horseheads American Legion "am"Lisi also receiving his gratitude of thanks from S Horseheads American Legion December 2014 Peppermint Brittle Criteria for using heating pads at the Courtyards: Peppermint candies are crushed and then stirred into melted white chocolate. Longest Night of the Year Sunday, December 21, 2014 at 6:03 PM EST The winter solstice marks the shortest day and the longest night of the year. The sun appears at its lowest point in the sky, and its noontime elevation appears to be the same for several days before and after the solstice. Hence the origin of the word solstice, which comes from Latin solstitium, from sol, "sun" and -stitium, "a stoppage." Following the winter solstice, the days begin to grow longer and the nights shorter.
