Re-Designing the Pop Can

Re-Designing the Pop Can
Due Date: _____________________
You’re the project leader for a team of packaging consultants. Your task is to create a
new drink can that will double the volume of the original can used for a new brand of
healthy pop. The dimensions of the original can are shown below along with three new
options intended to double the volume with the least amount of additional aluminum
needed for the new can. As project leader, you are to determine which of the following
three options will double the volume of the can and be the most cost effective choice.
The cost of aluminum is $0.06/square centimeter.
The Original Pop Can
The original can has a diameter of 8 cm and a height of 12 cm.
Option A – The ‘Wide’ Can Option B – The ‘Tall’ Can

same.
Option C simply packages two
of the original sized cans
together using plastic.
Part 1 - Determine which of the three options above meets the requirement of doubling
the volume while using the least amount of aluminum.
Clearly state your reasoning and the necessary calculations to support your
findings.
Show all steps needed to support your answer.
Designing a Prototype
Once you have determined the most cost effective can to double the volume of pop,
you need to design and build a prototype to show at a marketing meeting. Your
prototype must have the exact dimensions of the new can so you can show an example
at the meeting. You also must creatively design the label on the can to sell this new
“healthy pop”.
