We measure our success
by the accomplishments
of our graduates and
their contributions to the
community.
✈
I am honored to lead Middle Georgia State
College as its first permanent president and
excited about our bold, new future. The
college is poised to realize its extraordinary
potential with a powerful new vision that will
provide our students with a vibrant,
challenging intellectual environment. With five campuses in Macon,
Cochran, Dublin, Eastman and Warner Robins, as well as numerous
online learning opportunities, Middle Georgia State reaches far into
the mid-state and beyond delivering leading edge degree programs
to more than 8,100 students.
We are united in our mission of giving students a great learning
experience and many enjoyable college memories. United, we stand
for greatness that extends beyond orientation, progression and
graduation. It stands for the preparation of sophisticated college
graduates who are poised to be successful as they pursue their
career goals. Additionally, we are on track to become a university
within a few years, a step that will give us even greater opportunities
to serve Middle Georgia and beyond.
Your choice to invest in Middle Georgia State speaks to your
faith in the power of education, its significance to our community
and its influence on our future. Your support makes a difference in
the lives of our students each and every day as they aspire to learn,
grow and leave well-prepared for a rewarding career.
I thank you for your warmth and welcome to me as your
president. You have truly exemplified the truism of Southern
hospitality.
Christopher Blake, Ph.D.

Enthusiasm surrounds the arrival of the College’s new
President, Dr. Christopher Blake with his exemplary record of
educational accomplishments and engaging personality. We
welcome his guidance, as he has the experience to not only
strengthen the strong regional college that we already are, but the
vision and know-how to see us grow into a university. Middle
Georgia State College Foundation, Inc. pledges its support as we
embark on this transformation.
As we move forward under new leadership, we do so with
everyone as focused as ever on continuing the good work of those
who have gone before us. Our organization exists to support Middle
Georgia State College and the students it serves. We have worked
diligently over many years to build a great reputation that affords us
with a superior level of trust among those who support our cause.
We care about changing lives, we support students
who strive to do that, and we honor those who
empower students to further their education.
Your contributions can and do achieve extraordinary results. We
invite you to turn to the pages of this report that contain the stories
of four individuals whose lives were changed—or are continuing to
be changed—by the programs or people at our college.
Middle Georgia State has extraordinary potential. We have, we
are, and we will continue to serve and inspire people throughout
Middle Georgia.
Thank you for all you have done for us, and we thank you for the
many people whose lives you have helped to change.

Home-grown talent isn’t always easy to find.
People grow up, and many want to leave and see
the world. Some are able to, and do; some would
like to, but can’t; some could, but prefer to stay
at home.
STEVE
BELL
OCMULGEE
TRADERS
Steve Bell had several opportunities to leave and
not come back. A Middle Georgia native, he earned his
associate’s degree in art from Middle Georgia State
College, then transferred to the University of Georgia,
where he earned his fine arts degree, only to return to
Macon and continue his education in economics.
“After working for a printer for a couple of years I
started a full-service advertising agency, and we’ve been
doing that for about 20 years now,” he said. “Sometimes people ask why did you minor in economics? That
doesn’t sound like someone who had a degree in fine
arts. But the first thing that’s cut out of anybody’s
budget is their advertising budget when the economy
dips, so it’s good to have a really good, strong business
background.”
Bell, who now has another business project—
getting a new grocery store, Ocmulgee Traders, up and
running in a new loft apartment complex in downtown
Macon—saw not only the value of going to college close
to home, but the educational advantages.
“Middle Georgia State prepares you so well,” said
Bell. “It’s not a college that you can breeze through. You
get a very good, strong education there, so when I was
going away to UGA I was well prepared.”
Although Bell’s wife had worked previously in
London and Chicago, and Bell had his own visions of
one day working in Italy, “We decided that we wanted
our business to be here.” He added, “It’s worked out
great because Macon’s a wonderful place to raise a
family.” And, in his view at least, Middle Georgia State is
a great place to go to college.
“The college offers so many diversified tracks for
your education. It may be everything you need is right
there at that college. If you want to go into the medical
field, the business field, the science field, it’s there. I
think it’s a wonderful place to start school. One of the
best things is that I think it’s economically advantageous
to go to this university. It’s not a very expensive school
but you get a very high quality education.”
“Middle Georgia State . . . a very good, strong education . . . ”

“. . . were it not for the financial
assistance [Shelby] has received
from the Foundation, she might
not be where she is today.”
When Shelby Giles was in the ninth grade, she had
pneumonia and was hospitalized for several weeks.
During that time, the nurses who cared for her left a
lasting impression on this former Crawford County
High School STAR student.
A few years later, she decided to attend Middle
Georgia State College and major in math education.
Not satisfied by the coursework, Shelby pondered her
educational path and soon had a change of heart. The
memories of the nurses who had cared for and been so
kind to her kept coming back.
“When you’re sick, you don’t just want someone to

come in and take care of you. You want someone to be
your friend and make the experience better than it is,”
she said. My nurses “would come in and hang out with
me, get me out of the room and away from just
watching TV all day.” So, as she pondered switching her
college major, she remembered those medical friends
and she knew. “I want to be one of those nurses!”
Currently in her sophomore year at Middle Georgia
State receiving the Barbara J. Stickel Central Georgia
Health System Endowed Presidential Scholarship in
Nursing, Shelby admits that were it not for the financial
assistance she has received from the Foundation, she
might not be where she is today.
She said of the scholarship: “Not only does it make
me capable of being able to go to school, it really is the
sole reason of why I can go to school.” In her
pre-college discussions with her parents, she realized
that “it was a necessity that I get a scholarship because
they could not afford for me to go to school. I mean, we
would have tried to find a way, but the scholarship is
really what makes it possible for me to go to school. It’s
the reason I’m here right now.”

2013 Annual Report
There comes a day in every student’s life—maybe it
happened when he or she was 5 years old, or 15, or
20—when a decision is made that points that
individual in a particular career direction. Some
students—many, actually—have not yet settled on
a path when they enter the age of adulthood.
Lenora Green was one such student.
Even before graduating from Southeast High School
in Macon, Lenora knew a college education would lead
to a better career, but she needed help.
“I started singing in high school, but I didn’t know
exactly where to go.” Lenora struggled with the decision
of whether or not to leave home after graduation and
decided to stay and attend Middle Georgia State
College. “I found music there,” she said. Specifically, she
found music instructor Rebecca Lanning. “She was like,
‘Let’s teach this girl how to sing.’“
Lenora was given instruction and encouraged to
enter vocal competitions. “I started with a second place,
and it all just grew from there,” she said.
Middle Georgia State gave way to Shorter College,
then the University of Michigan for another degree, then
Indiana University for her performance diploma. This
young woman who just “sang” in high school had
become an accomplished opera singer, participated in
young artists programs and landed one of her first positions with the Detroit Opera Theater. Positions in Florida
and New York followed.
One connection led to another and today she is the
artist in residence at the Stax Music Academy, as well as
at LeMoyne-Owen College, both in Memphis, Tennessee. She went to Stax to help under-privileged children.
“I’m here, teaching kids
voice and how to sing and

get acclimated to the classical
side of singing—and getting them
ready for college themselves,” she
said. Now she’s helping young people make life decisions—the same kinds of decisions that opened up her
career path with the guidance and encouragement she
got from teachers and educators at Middle Georgia
State College.
“Miss Lanning was a great recruiter,” Lenora said.
“I just needed to stay in music, and the fact that Middle
Georgia State had a music program helped me to keep
going.” Now, and well into the future, she’ll be
improving the lives of others, providing the same kind
of nurturing that she received in her home town in
Middle Georgia.
Although Lenora very much remains a performer, she is
also a mentor, working with Opera Memphis and its
outreach program for children.
I found music at Middle
Georgia State College.

2013 Annual Report
“…the most beneficial
experience I had
was in college.”
As a high school star baseball player in Warner
Robins in the early 1980s, Kal Daniels had options
about where he would go to college. One of his
options was to accept a full athletic scholarship to
UCLA, or he could accept offers from a couple of
Georgia junior colleges.
“At that time, a high school baseball coach told me
that Middle Georgia State College was a great avenue,”
Daniels said. Even though UCLA is a good school, it is a
long way from home, family and friends.
That was a great choice, said Daniels, who was
drafted out of college and into Major League Baseball,
playing many years at the sport’s highest level. “I
came down here to Cochran and I really enjoyed
my experience.”
He admits that while athletics opened the
door to college, it did not define him. He said
the guidance and knowledge about life that he
learned from his coaches played a big part in
his journey into adulthood.
“Even right now, when I’m training kids, I tell

people the most beneficial experience I had was in
college—not in pro ball, but in college. The camaraderie, being able to learn, to grow up and become an
adult, it’s exciting. I tell people that if I could’ve come
back for another year before I turned pro—if I could turn
back the hands of time—I would have come back to
Middle Georgia State College.”
His pro baseball career took him around the United
States many times, and to foreign countries as well, but
there was always a strong connection back home. It’s a
connection that was as strong then as it is today—
Daniels operates a youth baseball academy in his
hometown of Warner Robins.
“I met people from all around the world,” he said,
“and I go back to my roots. I tell people all the time it’s
not where you start, it’s where you finish. And Cochran is
where I started. This college is a great opportunity. It’s a
springboard to who knows?”
