SG Messenger www.springgroveschool.co.uk SG MESSENGER: Friday, 28th April 2017, No. 28 IT IS ALL IN THE NUMBERS! On Tuesday the Spring Grove team went off to Ashford for the Year 5 Maths Competition. We had some fruity water and cake and all the teams sat down at their tables. We went through some health and safety rules and the competition was on. The 25 minute timer started, Amelia (our runner) was off to get question 1; we got it right and we were on number 2 in no time. We passed about 5 questions and finished equal 4th. The winners got 70 points equal so there was tie breaker. 2nd was 70 points,. 3rd was 60 points and 4th was 50 points. Thank you to Mr Dankert for taking us. On Thursday, the Maths Team went to Junior King’s for another Maths competition. We were in teams of two. We had 8 minutes to finish the five questions on each table. Me and Robin were Team 1 and Henry and Madeleine were team 2. The Prep 5 mathematicians performed extremely well against stiff opposition Henry and Madeleine finished runners up, but I don’t know what place me and Robin came. from a large number of schools. Madeleine and Henry returned with welldeserved runners-up prizes. Thank you to Mr Jones for taking us. Year 5 Maths Competitions Report By Hasini SUMMER BALL 2017 The posters are up and the tickets are now on sale for our Great Gatsby themed ‘Summer Ball’ on Saturday 10 June 2017, 7pm for 7.30pm. Come along to what is sure to be a fabulous evening. Please see Mrs Read for more information. 1 ARTIST (& HISTORIAN) OF THE WEEK I have already seen some impressive work so far this term but this example is particularly outstanding. As well as being an expert on tsunamis and weather phenomena, Hamish (Reception) is also an authority on everything there is to know about the Titanic. He explained to me how, when and where the ship was launched, sailed and sank... and he has produced this fantastic picture. Brilliant! Congratulations Hamish. Great Work. THE FIVE CHURCH WALK One of the great local annual events is coming up this weekend... do you want to take part? Many of our SG children and their families have in the past undertaken (all or part of) the Five Churches Walk on the May Bank Holiday. You can do it to support various local charities and/or simply do it for the pleasure. We hope to see some of you along the way on Monday 1st May 2017. https://www.thefivechurchwalk.co.uk/ 2 SG CONNECT PAUSE FOR THOUGHT Last week’s answer: Ella Fitzgerald (Chair, Fits, Ell, La, Old) She would have been 100 years old last Tuesday). EARLY YEARS OPEN MORNING Please invite your friends, family and work colleagues to join us for our Early Years (Teddies, Nursery, Reception) Open Morning on Thursday 18 May, 9.30am to 11.30am. You will be able to speak to our teaching staff and pupils about all aspects of life at Spring Grove School. All are welcome! 4 SPEED LIMIT — REMINDER Please be reminded that, for the safety of our pupils, the speed limited around the School site is 10mph. Please drive responsibly. SAINSBURY’S VOUCHERS Teddies and Nursery are still collecting Sainsburys Vouchers. PARKING — UPDATE It’s the final week to collect ‘Active Kids School Vouchers’ from Sainsbury’s and there are collection boxes in the Teddies and Nursery entrance areas - the more we collect the more equipment we can purchase for the children. With the on site development of two new classrooms, new changing rooms and a new library currently taking place, we acknowledge that at times parking can be difficult. We have spoken to the contractors and asked for them to park within their secure compound and we are hopeful that this will help to ease congestion. Please be reminded that, for the safety of our pupils, parking outside Teddies is reserved for Nursery and Teddies parents only. IN TEDDIES THIS WEEK The younger members in Teddies have been experimenting mark making with paint and colour. During garden play the children have been balancing and connecting blocks to build towers. LOST PROPERTY Would all parents please check their child’s bag, over the bank holiday weekend, as a blue pencil case (with animal print) has been misplaced and mislaid. Musical Bumps will be finishing at half term in May and will be restarting again in the Autumn Term 5 6 SG EXTRA PLEASE COME ALONG AT 4.30PM TO 6PM AND JOIN US IN OUR SUMMER TERM ACTIVITIES IN SG EXTRA NEXT TERM Once children have finished making and eating their tea. Which enables them to enjoy socialising around the table over the day (time permitting) we continue with our planned activity. All children are made very welcome and to enable us to know how many will be joining us for tea and activities. We ask could children be booked in at the latest the day before please. This is most helpful and much appreciated. Particularly on a day any specific activity is listed. This ensures sufficient food/ ingredients/materials are available for all. It is a relaxed, fun atmosphere that the children can enjoy at the end of the school day between 4.30 - 6pm Monday - Friday. Why not come along and join us! All our planning is coming together nicely and we are all working hard to make this an evening to remember! The Spring Grove family is unique and we want to celebrate 50 special years with all of you, past, present and future at this wonderful event. I was trying to count how many times we had attended an SG Ball… I stopped counting at 21! Surely there should be a medal involved? So please do join us for an unforgettable evening of music, entertainment, fine dining, fundraising and fun! Now to important matters...What to wear? We would love to see as many Daisy Buchanan's & Jay Gatsby's as possible (prizes for best dressed) but fear not, just add a string of pearls and some long gloves and the odd feather or two or, just wear your favourite dress (ladies only)! The internet is our friend at times like this, so here is a list of websites where you can buy everything from dresses to accessories or just for some 20's inspiration. 10 www.littleblackdress.co.uk / www.gatsbylady.com / www.frockandfrill.com / www.uniquevintage.com / www.rockmyvintage.com Lost Property Violet Hopkinson Felipe Taffarrello Abigail weir Oscar Toombs Blazer and kilt Blazer Named Hoodie Games top and Dickens house t-shirt Anya Opie School Coat Joseph Evans School Coat Arun Juan Navy Jumper Abigail Beale Games Top Poppy Courtenay-Snipp Running Spikes CONGRATULATIONS Headmaster’s Stars Austen: Mary Bowe, Amelia Street, Evie Dawson Chaucer: William Rawlinson, Phoebe Boucher, Mylie Wood, Faith Barnett Conrad: Thomas Makin, Annabelle Darsey Dickens: Edward McNair, Emily Borg, Abigail Weir Happy Birthday… Citizenship Awards: Bronze: Edward McNair & Faith Barnett Emmy Mitford-Slade Skiing Awards: The 2017 Ski Trip Pupils, Andrew Dod Swimming Certificates: Annabel Holman, Olivia DungateMarsh, Isabelle Beadle Rhythmic Gymnastics and Drama Awards: Phoebe Boucher Hockey Medals: Phoebe Boucher& Emmy Mitford-Slade Diary Monday 1st May - Friday 5th May Monday 1st Bank Holiday: no school Tuesday 2nd Prep 6 First Aid Training Prep 5 Parents’ Mtg: French Trip 4:00pm Prep 6 Parents’ Mtg: Tewkesbury Trip 4.00pm How to treat others… Whatever we say or do or click, we should THINK and ask ourselves, Is it…..
