Speaking Countries and The Czech Republic (Anglicky mluvící země a Česká republika). Materiál může sloužit jako názorná pomůcka doplňující
výklad učitele, ale také je vhodná pro domácí přípravu žáků (např. zpřístupněním formou e-learningu). Materiál obsahuje zpětnou vazbu ověřující
pochopení látky v podobě závěrečného snímku s otázkami k tématu.

 Washington
D.C. is the capital of the United
States of America.
 D.C. stands for District of Columbia.
 The city is named Washington after the
country’s first president, George Washington.
 It is located on the Potomac river on the east
coast of the USA.

 It
is the seat of the federal government of the
USA.
 The city´s area was taken from the states of
Maryland and Virginia.
 It cover the area of about 180 sq km.
 The population of the metropolitan area is
about 4 million people.

FEDERAL DISTRICT
 All
the country’s big federal offices are located
here, including the Capitol and the White
House.
 There are many monuments located along the
National Mall, a large open area in the center
of the city.
 Here you can find the Washington Monument,
Jefferson Memorial, Vietnam War Memorial,
the National World War II Memorial, etc.
HISTORY
 The
District of Columbia was established in
1790.
 The site for the capital was chosen by
President Washington himself as his own
plantation Mount Vernon was only 25 km down
the Potomac river.
 The capital was designed by the French
architect Pierre L´Enfant.
THE CAPITOL BUILDING
 It
is Washington´s most famous landmark.
 It is situated on Capitol Hill along the eastern
end of the Mall.
 It contains a number of buildings including The
House of Representative Wing, The Senate
Wing, The Library of Congress, The Thomas
Jefferson Building, The Supreme Court
Building, etc.

WASHINGTON MONUMENT
 Washington
Monument is the city´s most
remarkable landmark (completed in 1884).
 It is a white marble obelisk (169.3 m high).
 It rises in the middle of the Mall.
 There are only 8 small windows, 2 on each
side.
 It was built to commemorate the first American
president, General George Washington.

THE WHITE HOUSE
 The
White House is the official residence of
the president of the United States.
 It is situated on Pennsylvania Avenue.
 It has been the residence of the US presidents
for more than 200 years.
 Official rooms are on the first floor while the
second and the third floor rooms are occupied
by the presidential family.
