Mr. Showbiz
American Masters Mel Brooks:
Make a Noise
After 60 years in show business, Mel Brooks
has earned more major awards than any other
living entertainer. The comedy giant has energetically avoided a documentary profile being made—until now.
American Masters Mel Brooks: Make a Noise journeys through Brooks’ colorful
career, from his early years in live television as a writer for Sid Caesar’s Your Show
of Shows to his wildly comedic films such as Young Frankenstein, Blazing Saddles,
and The Producers—which later evolved into the Tony-winning musical of the same
name. Featuring interviews with Brooks, Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane, Cloris
Leachman, Carl Reiner, Joan Rivers, and many others, it offers a fascinating look at
the Mel Brooks we know and love—and the Mel Brooks we don’t know at all.
To whet your appetite, we’ve gathered some surprising facts about the life, career,
and outrageously amazing world of Mel Brooks.
The Ethel Merman
Fan Club
Brooks saw his first
Broadway musical when
he was nine years old.
The show was Anything
Goes starring Ethel Merman—and it changed his
life forever. “It was one
incredible number after
the other. I was literally crying with happiness,” he tells American Masters.
Master to Master
When Brooks shot High Anxiety, a sendup of Vertigo and other Alfred Hitchcock
films, the master of comedy turned to the
master of suspense. He shared a rough cut
of the film with Hitchcock, who declared
the spoof of the infamous shower scene
in Psycho brilliant. “And then he said you
got one thing wrong,” Brooks reveals in
the American Masters film. “Shower rings,
you have 13. We only had ten.”
Reading is Fundamental
Brooks rarely goes to bed before 3 a.m.
and spends the latenight hours reading
the classics. His 1970 film The Twelve

Chairs, about a young man’s search for
chairs confiscated by the Soviet government, was based on a 1928 Russian novel.
Call Him Irresistible
Brooks first met his late wife Anne
Bancroft on the set of The Perry
Como Show in 1961. She fell in love
with him instantly. “He looked like
my father and he acted like my
mother,” she explains. They were married
for 41 years until her death in 2005.
His Favorite
Year
The 1982 film My
Favorite Year was
inspired by Brooks’
experience with
Errol Flynn, who
appeared in an
episode of Your
Show of Shows.
Brooks, a junior writer on the program,
was asked to chaperone the notorious
ladies’ man. “I was locked in the Waldorf Towers with Errol Flynn and two
red-headed, Cuban sisters,” he said
in a Film Score magazine interview. “It
was the craziest weekend of my life.”
They Like Him. They Really Like Him.
Three of Brooks’ films ranked in
the American Film Institutes’s list
of top 100 comedy films of all time:
Blazing Saddles (#6), The Producers
(#11), and Young Frankenstein (#13). In
June, he will be honored with an AFI Life
Achievement Award, the highest honor
for a career in film.
