A total number of some quantity is given, TA percentage of the total is also given
The phrase 25% OF the total is used to indicate a multiplication problem.
Multiply the percent times the total to get the number of items you want to find.
How do I find the numbers of cars that ARE NOT RED.
Lets say there is a total of 50 cars.
Some of the cars are RED. The rest ARE NOT RED. You are told that 20% of the 50 total cars ARE
RED. This means the product of .20 and 50 will be the number of RED cars. .20 • 50 = 10. 10 of the
50 cars ARE RED.
20% of the 50 total cars ARE RED. This means 80% of the 50 ARE NOT RED. This means the
product of .80 and 50 will be the number of cars that ARE NOT red. .80 • 50 = 40. 10 of the 50 cars
ARE RED.
11. 25% of the 64 cars in the school parking!
lot are owned by students. How many of !
these cars are owned by students?!
25% of the 64 total cars
ARE OWNED by students.
The product of .25 and 64 will
be the number of cars that
ARE OWNED by students.
13. The college has 40 teachers. 40% of
them are on vacation. How many
teachers are not on vacation?
40% of the 40 teachers
ARE ON vaction. This means
that 60% of the 40 teachers
ARE NOT ON vaction
The product of .60 and 40
will be the number teachers
that ARE NOT ON vaction.
.25 • 64 = 16
!
16 of the 64 total cars
ARE OWNED by students.
.60 • 40 = 24
24 of the 40 teachers
