grand final

MESSAGE of WELCOME from CBD Chairperson Alison Hall Welcome players and spectators to the Central Bowls Division Saturday Pennant Division 1 and Division 2 Grand Finals 2016/17. Congratulations to the Seymour VRI Bowling Club and Alexandra Bowling Club who once again face‐off in the Division 1 Grand Final, I look forward to a great display of bowling from these two top sides. It is great to see two new combatants for the Division Two Grand Final well done to Wallan Yellow and Kilmore Blue. The CBD thanks Wallan, Eildon, Alexandra and Seymour for hosting this year’s final series; they have presented us with excellent greens, fabulous facilities and generous hospitality. Once again the CBD has run a successful 21 week Saturday Pennant competition and I thank all the Players, Managers and Officials for supporting this competition throughout the long season. The winner today will go on to compete in the Central Goulburn Murray Region Champion of Champion Saturday Pennant on 1/4/17 at Wunghnu Bowling Club and then if successful on to the reintroduced State Champion of Champion Saturday Pennant at Moama in May. It would be great for CBD players from all Clubs to support whichever Club wins today by showing up in force at Wunghnu next Saturday. CBD competitions this year have been further enhanced by using the STG portal to record all our Pennant results. Well done everyone for embracing the technology. A big thank you to our CBD Administration Officer, Stephen McGregor, for overseeing the introduction of online results and helping Clubs trouble shoot when necessary. I have been very impressed by how smoothly the CBD has transitioned to recording Pennant results this way. Recently the CBD Board sent a survey to all Clubs for input regarding the running of next year’s competitions. If you have an opinion on any of the issues then please make your Club aware of your thoughts. Again well done to VRI and Alexandra on reaching the Div 1 Grand Final, I would love to see a CBD team go on to the State Play‐Offs. Good bowling to Wallan Yellow and Kilmore Blue as I know you will be bowling your hearts out for Grand Final honours. Regards Alison Hall

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
Saturday 25th March
by The Oracle
The Grand Final today between the divisions top two sides from the home and away season and past two Premiership winners, Seymour VRI and Alexandra is being played on the grass green at the Seymour Bowling Club and is a repeat of last years Grand Final. These two sides met twice during the home and away season and with results shared it was Alexandra who finally gained the upper hand and the momentum by winning the Qualifying Final at Seymour two weeks ago by 12 shots. In the first encounter at their home green in Round 5 it was a dominant performance from Seymour VRI 18‐132 defeating Alexandra 0‐61 by a mammoth 71 shots with all rinks up. Round 5 12 November Seymour VRI 18–132 d Alexandra 0‐61 Daniel Noonan 33 d Graeme Matthews 14 Luke Spargo 26 d Larry Scott 20 Colin Marsh 38 d Greg Gilmore 10 Greg Jones 35 d Mark Simmons 17 In the return match at Alexandra in Round 12 with rink wins split evenly it was Alexandra coming out on top 14‐101 to Seymour VRI 4‐62 by a comfortable 26 shots. Round 12 21 January Alexandra 14‐101 d Seymour VRI 4‐75 Larry Scott 28 d Colin Marsh 19 Graeme Matthews 22 lt Greg Jones 24 Mark Simmons 15 lt Luke Spargo 22 Greg Gilmore 36 d Daniel Noonan 75 With one win each they met again in the Qualifying Final at Seymour where it was Alexandra jumping out of the blocks and Seymour VRI coming home hard but unable to close the gap as Alexandra won 98 to 86 and going straight through to the Grand Final which left Seymour VRI facing a Preliminary Final match against Kilmore to get back to the Grand Final and defend their title form last year. Qualifying Final Played at Seymour Alexandra 98 d Seymour VRI 86 Greg Gilmore 36 d Daniel Noonan 12 Graeme Matthews 12 lt Luke Spargo 32 Mark Simmons 34 d Bill Dawe 10 Larry Scott 16 lt Greg Jones 32 In today’s Grand Final the all important skipper matchups will be absolutely critical as results from the 3 match‐ups over the season show that Seymour VRI have won 8 rinks to Alexandra’s 4 rink wins. On show today, as you would expect with the two top sides playing we will witness six of the divisions top ten skippers in action, four of them from Alexandra and surprisingly only two from Seymour VRI, whilst in a quirk of the draw it is only the G. Matthews v G. Jones match up that has occurred once before this season with a narrow 2 shot win to Jones. G. Gilmore (3) v L. Spargo (1) The skipper G. Matthews (8) v G. Jones (4) Match ups & Ratings L. Scott (10) v W. Dawe (15) M. Simmons (5) v W. Noonan (13) They say that winning form is good form and with Alexandra winning the past two encounters between these sides logic would suggest that they should get over the line in a tight match, however it is a Grand final and with Seymour VRI in scintillating form last weekend in disposing of third placed Kilmore by 40 shots and finding their mojo whilst Alexandra was having the weekend off, which I am not convinced is a good thing, I will stick my neck out and suggest that Seymour VRI will defend their title and get up by the narrowest of margins in what should be an absolute thriller. Let’s hope that the weather does not contribute to the result and we see a green that is free running which will allow these two very even sides to provide the ultimate spectacle that the pinnacle of our Saturday bowls deserves and hopefully it will entice a large crowd along to the Seymour Bowling Club. DIVISION TWO
Meanwhile in division two the Grand Final will see a new winner on the trophy as
Wallan Yellow and Kilmore Blue will do battle at the Seymour bowling club on the
synthetic green.
These two sides again only met twice during the home and away season and with
results shared it was Wallan Yellow who winning the Qualifying Final at Seymour
two weeks ago by 24 shots who advanced to the grand Final via the easy route.
In their first encounter at their home green in Round 4 it was a dominant
performance from Kilmore Blue 14-107 defeating Wallan Yellow 2-52 by a
mammoth 71 shots with all rinks up.

out on top 14-76 to Kilmore Blue 2-57 by 16 shots.

With one win each they met again in the Qualifying Final at Seymour where it was
Wallan Yellow going straight through to the Grand Final winning on all rinks 81 to
57 and sending Kilmore Blue into a sudden death Preliminary Final against
Seymour 1 where a win would be required to get back to the Grand Final and
another chance at redemption against Wallan Yellow.
Qualifying Final Played at Seymour Wallan Yellow 81 d Kilmore Blue 57 Mark Sims 24 d David Taffe 23 John Coustley 25 d Peter Wood 20 Des Lappin 32 d Bill Jarrett 14 As is the case in most games and especially the Grand Final it may well be the
skipper matchups that will decide the premiership. We will see six of the top 10
skippers in action today with the two top sides playing each other.
M. Sims(5) v W. Jarrett (6)
The skipper Match ups & Ratings J. Coustley (10) v P. Wood (1)
D. Lappin (7) v D. Taffe (3)
With only 2 points separating these two sides on the ladder at the end of the
season they were clearly the two best credentialed sides in Division Two and
deserve their opportunity to be crowned Premiers today.
Wallan Yellow with their outstanding performance having won the last two
encounters between these two sides including their dominant performance over
Kilmore Blue in the Qualifying Final at Seymour two weeks ago should probably
start as favourites however we must remember that Kilmore Blue have been a
force in this division all season and will not lie down.
Kilmore will be searching for their first division two flag since the 2009-10 season
whilst Wallan Yellow are seeking their clubs first division two flag in the CBD.
I will lean towards Wallan Yellow in this one courtesy of their recent excellent
performances over the latter weeks of the season.
