According to Merriam-Webster.com, there are just as many meanings of “green” as there are shades of the color. “Green” can be a verb, an adjective or a noun, depending upon it’s use. For instance, a woman could be described as being “green” with envy or green can used to describe the color of her outfit, or the type of lunch she is having (green salad). Green can describe a person depending upon their lack of experience, such as a rookie baseball pitcher who is “green” or the ripeness of a fruit. Lately, however, we have been hearing the word “green” being used to describe a way of living that is beneficial to our planet. Green is everywhere -- in the news, politics, fashion, and even technology. The truth is that every single thing we do each day has an impact on the planet--good or bad. The good news is that as an individual you have the power to control most of your choices and, therefore, the impact you create: from where you live to what you buy, eat and use to light your home, to how you shop or vote, you can have a global impact. Here at Belmont Village we have made some significant changes in the way we do things. We have changed from Styrofoam products for beverages and food to using our ceramic cups and plates. We have switched from powdered laundry detergent to a planet friendly liquid, and we are even recycling all of our shredded paper instead of sending it to the dump! If you would like to know more about ways to “Go Green” we are offering a discussion and think tank this month, to make sure we are doing everything possible to do our part! Living at Belmont Village is a wonderful thing, and we want to make sure it will be wonderful for years and years to come! This is normally done by cleaning out closets, organizing, and throwing out junk. We can do the same with our diets, by throwing out junk food, processed foods and eating only fresh fruits and vegetables. We can spring clean our metabolism by clean eating, one meal at a time. Clean eating is a trend that we see everywhere these days. A lot of restaurants are getting back to basics called “farm to table”. They buy local foods that are fresh and not processed. The taste is much better and the food is more nutrient. Our foods at Belmont are fresh and local, so we have been eating clean at Belmont for awhile now! The term clean eating means to eat the healthiest options in each food group; embracing foods such as whole grains, fresh vegetables and fruits and healthy proteins. It also means staying away from junk food and processed foods like hot dogs, bologna, donuts, candy bars, etc. Clean eating is not about weight loss but focuses on good health. Eating clean may lead to weight loss for some by eliminating unhealthy fats and sugar from the diet. If you eat fresh vegetables and fruits and stay away from fried foods and processed foods you will start feeling healthier. Eating local meats that are not raised on large factory farm is also healthier by eliminating antibiotics and hormones that are fed to large factory farmed animals. Here are some tips to start eating clean: • Eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead of salty and sugary foods as a snack. • Instead of eating sweetened fruited yogurt, buy unsweetened yogurt and add your own fresh fruit. • Use grass fed butter instead of margarine or use avocados with your whole grains and veggies. • Drink low fat yogurt smoothies with fruit instead of eating ice cream. • Eat snacks like pretzel chips ,nuts, or crunchy vegetables instead of salty chips. Spring Forward! Don’t forget, daylight saving time begins the second Sunday in March! Move your clocks ahead one hour at 2 a.m. It’s Wonderful Being Wellderly March is here, and in addition to March Madness and St. Patrick’s Day, it’s time to celebrate Wellderly Week! Beginning on the third Monday in March, this weeklong event is a celebration and recognition of senior citizens who do not act their age. If you take a look around you, it’s easy to see just what that means: Today’s seniors are something special. Medical advances and active lifestyles are helping seniors live longer than ever, and not just live, but thrive. Senior adults are becoming pros at Wii, going on frequent excursions, volunteering, exercising daily and updating their Facebook pages! These are the people who are showing the rest of society that “80 is the new 70,” and so on. Remember as you celebrate Wellderly Week the words of poet Robert Browning: “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be.” A Figure of Speech Phrase: Mad as a March hare Meaning: Crazy or bizarre Origin: During their breeding season, which begins in March, hares are known for erratic behavior such as jumping and boxing. Thus, someone acting strangely out of character is much like a hare during springtime. This comparison is also the inspiration for the adjective “harebrained.” COF and NEIGHBORHOOD DISCOVERIES INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT CHARLIE CHAPLIN Charlie Chaplin is probably the most well-known actor of the early 20th century. He is among those few people from the silent era whom we still recognize without much hassle. Charles Spencer Chaplin popularly known as “Charlie Chaplin” had a tragic childhood. His father died when he was just 12, due to alcohol abuse. His mother suffered from periodic bouts of insanity and was committed to a mental asylum. As a result, Charlie started working at a very early age to feed himself. He made his professional debut at the age of eight as a member of a juvenile group called “The Eight Lancashire Lads”. At the age of eighteen, he toured the US and that was the start of his brilliant career in acting and direction. His career spanned more than 75 years, from childhood in the Victorian era until a year before his death at age 88. Here are some lesser known facts about this incredible performer: • Charlie Chaplin was born on 16 April 1889 in Walworth, London, United Kingdom just four days before Adolf Hitler. • He was the first actor to appear on Time magazine. • He got married 4 times. • He won one Oscar award for the movie “Limelight” in the best music category. • His own daughter, the actress Geraldine Chaplin, portrayed his on screen mother in the movie, “Chaplin ". • Due to suspicions of him being a communist, his imprints were removed from the Hollywood walk of fame and have been lost subsequently. • His body was stolen after he died in an effort to extort money from his family. Chaplin’s body was recovered 11 weeks later after the grave-robbers were captured. He is now buried under 6 feet of concrete to prevent further theft attempts. • Charlie Chaplin never became a U.S. citizen and was exiled from the U.S. in 1953 because he refused to have the American citizenship. He lived in Switzerland during his exiled years and died in his sleep there on December 25, 1977. Health News DR. SHAINBERG -PODIATRIST On-site visits 1st Wed. of every month.
