Welcome to CUALANYC, New York City’s Irish Cultural Festival The first annual CUALANYC occurs in the centenary year of Ireland’s 1916 Rising, in which New York played an important role. In curating these events we have kept in mind Paolo Friere‘s definition of commemoration where men and women “transcend themselves” and “for whom looking at the past must only be a means of understanding more clearly what and who they are so that they can more wisely build the future… This..is the great humanistic and historical task of the oppressed: to liberate themselves.” WWW.CUALANYC.COM Brought to you by Cuala Productions, our partners Culture Ireland, the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council, and a special strand of New York – Ireland 1916 Commemorative Events produced in partnership with Film Fleadh Foundation and supported by New York City Council. If you are interested in being a volunteer please visit our website. www.cualanyc.com We couldn’t do this without your financial support - especially in this our first year. Kindly consider making a donation at our website or in person when attending one of our events. Thank you and go raibh míle maith agat, (that means we wish really good things for you). In 1908 Elizabeth (Lolly) Yeats and her brother William Butler Yeats, set up Cuala Press in Churchtown, Dublin, a printing press that published much of the literature of the Irish cultural revival in the early 1900s. Aisling Ghéar Theatre Company, Belfast. Written as a special commission from CualaNYC. Directed by Bríd Gallagher. A Girl of Genius portrays the life of Alice Milligan: Methodist, journalist, poet, Irish speaker and ardent nationalist. Born in 1865 in County Tyrone, she brought together Protestant and Catholic in cultural clubs she founded in Belfast. A vital figure in the Irish cultural revival, she knew personally most of the well-known figures of her time – Yeats, Casement, Connolly, Hyde, Maud Gonne and Eoin McNeill. Writing in the Irish Review in September 1914, Thomas MacDonagh, described her as “the best Irish poet of her generation”. In 1926 George Russell wrote “Thirty years ago there did not seem to be a people in Europe less visited by the creative fire. Then a girl of genius, Miss Milligan, began to have premonitions…” A Girl of Genius will be presented in English and preceded by a talk by Milligan biographer Catherine Morris. Reservations at www.cualanyc.com TWO SORE LEGS 24 MAY / 8PM / $25 THE THEATRE UPSTAIRS AT THE ROUTE 66 SMOKEHOUSE 26 MAY / 2PM - $15 Matinee NEW YORK IRISH CENTER, QUEENS 25 MAY / 8PM / $25 AN BÉAL BOCHT, BRONX Two Sore Legs by Brenda Murphy. Green Shoot Productions, Belfast. Starring Maria Connolly, directed by Martin Lynch. Presented in Partnership with the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and the British Council and sponsored by Pelham Funeral. Set in 1950s and 60s Belfast, Two Sore Legs tells the true story of playwright Brenda Murphy’s mother Bridget, a young holiday camp Redcoat from West Belfast who had six children by a married man. The play explores the scandal, pain, joy, and fallout from this extraordinary arrangement and what it meant for Murphy, her siblings and of course her mother. From the rowdy and fractious relationship between Bridget and her own father to the comical visits of the local parish priest wanting to take her young children from her, this play exudes the most explicit of family emotions and experiences. Described by BBC as a ‘tour de force’, Connolly gives an outstanding one-woman performance in this witty comedy with an intriguing, almost unbelievable storyline for a show that drew a raft of four-star reviews at the Edinburgh Festival. Reservations at www.cualanyc.com / 8PM - $25 DEARGDHÚIL: ANATOMY OF PASSION. POEMS OF MÁIRE MHAC AN TSAOI 26 MAY / 8:30 PM / $10 AMERICAN IRISH HISTORICAL SOCIETY This riveting new documentary explores the life, work and sensual poetic imagination of the poet Máire Mhac an tSaoi. She helped revolutionize Irish poetry by drawing on a native tradition to express a passionate sensibility and taboo emotions, at a time when women’s voices were on the margins of literature and society. Born in 1922, her story is set against a backdrop of a tumultuous century in Irish history in which she and her family (her father Seán MacEntee, her husband Conor Cruise O’Brien) were centrally involved. It is told from an intimate perspective through dramatic representations of a sequence of poems re-imagined and choreographed as short films intercut with rare footage and the poet’s own commentary on her life and work. The occasionally provocative treatment of her poems highlights the tension between the public persona of a powerful public figure and the exploration of female sexuality at the heart of her poetry. Featuring performance artist Maureen Fleming, Louis de Paor, Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Olwen Fouéré.
