Bringing Them Home with Dignity
2015-2016 Steward Impact Report
“The Harvest Center
gave me a brand new
perspective on life. I
found myself, when
I found the Harvest
Center.”
- Marvin
Greetings Friends and Partners:
How do we solve homelessness in our community? This is the BIG question we have contemplated and explored for many
years at The Harvest Center of Charlotte. In the first quarter of 2016, we took a bold step to position our organization to have
a major impact on reducing the number of homeless men and women in our community. The move into our newly renovated
headquarters on Freedom Drive is already resulting in amazing transformations in individual lives
and the community at large. We have made it our goal to lift situationally homeless men and
women sleeping in emergency shelters, currently 1800, to permanent housing and productive lives.
We are committed to bringing them home with dignity!
Over the last year, we have taken engagement and transformation to a new level of effectiveness,
in our new headquarters and our houses throughout the community. Daily, we engage volunteers
and clients in a caring community that boosts empowerment over entitlement and creates an
environment that motivates lasting change in people’s lives. Since 2015 we have activated more
than 14,000 volunteer service hours in partnership with compassionate individuals, skilled service
providers, caring community partners, and generous donors. This has been, and will continue to be,
our recipe for success. As a highlight, in the winter of 2016, we are partnering with Urban Ministry Center to host a Room In the
Inn site. This partnership will create a pathway to move homeless men and women from sleeping on cots to living in our fullyfurnished transitional housing program called the Transformation Program.
Although we have a great vision for the years ahead, it’s important for us to take a moment to look back over the past two years,
and reflect, with you, on the good work we have done together to solve this crisis of homelessness. Through this report, you will
see that our success is your success. Thanks to friends and partners like you, we have seen many lives lifted and transformed
for the Glory of God and the good of our community. I am sincerely grateful for every person who took the time to bring us to
this place. We pray that your lives will be blessed due to your generosity of service and resources, making The Harvest Center a
beacon of light in Charlotte, North Carolina.
With Sincere Appreciation,
God Bless you.
Colin Pinkney
Executive Director
Colleagues and Friends:
At The Harvest Center, we believe that solutions to homelessness are not grounded in hand outs, soup
kitchens or governmental subsidies. They are indeed “part” of the solution. However, a real solution ... a
sustainable solution, is much more complicated. Why? Because, poverty is much more than a simple lack
of material resources and it takes much more than donations and handouts to solve it. The Harvest Center sees the dignity in everyone and seeks to restore hope by empowering the materially
poor. Our credo is to Engage, Relate, and to Transform. We engage our constituents through our feeding
ministry, we relate to them through our housing and teaching programs and transform them through the
love, grace and mercy of Jesus Christ – through whom all things are possible. We do this not through a
hand out, but through a hand up!
Our mission to end homelessness is bold. But we are excited about our progress to date and the possibilities that lie ahead. Earlier
this year, we relocated The Harvest Center to The Movement Center on Freedom Drive in West Charlotte. This newly renovated,
yet low cost facility has enabled us to expand our feeding and transformation services and our mission to more broadly serve
those in need and to further expand on our mission to end homelessness and fulfill part of God’s Great Commission.
On behalf of all of our board members, our caring, passionate and faithful staff and our incredible team of dedicated volunteers,
we thank you for your support and shared interest in furthering our mission and ministry.
Gratefully,

Catrina is originally
from Upstate New
York and bounced from
foster care home to
home between the
ages of 5 and 11. Her
search for a deeper
relationship with a
loving God and a more
stable lifestyle made
her reach out to The
Harvest Center. She is
the house supervisor for
two of THC’s residences
and works part-time
with Two Guys-N-aKitchen as a server and
hostess for catered
events. Catrina is using
her background in food
service management
and hospitality to
support this partnership
with The Harvest
Center.
Physical & Spiritual Nutrition
THC has served over 450,000 meals since 2002 to address the hunger
needs of the homeless, poor
and unemployed. This outreach
ministry has set the foundation
for transformation in many lives.
Through salvation, discipleship
and church connections, job
training and placement, and
transitional housing services –
we have seen lasting change and
renewed hope in the lives of those

Housing and Employment Security
80% of our program participants are
able to get and keep above minimum
wage jobs within six months. Our holistic
housing model allows our participants to
transition to permanent housing within
twelve months of entering our program.

Stewardship and Sustainability
THC is able to make a significant
impact through our stewardship
model which minimizes management
cost while maximizing program
resources. Eighty-one percent of
every dollar received goes directly to
programs and services.
Teddy Technology Lab
MOVE THAT MATTERS
It began with a vision. Then
a $85,000 matching grant
challenge from the Brand and
Teddy Families. And then
it became a Move that Matters capital campaign goal of
$600,000. The community responded and exceeded the
goal by $66,049.89.
By late 2014, the Board of The Harvest Center recognized
that to continue expanding the
services offered and to reach
more people in our community, it
would be necessary to relocate.
After considerable research and prayer, The
Harvest Center chose The Movement Center at
2225 Freedom Drive. A project of The Movement
Foundation, The Movement Center partners with a
number of effective ministries and local non-profit
organizations to provide them with the platform to
move their missions forward, grow the community
and promote a greater movement. This partnership
has enabled The Harvest Center to considerably
expand our service offerings with like-minded
organizations and bring hope to another area of Charlotte just as we did to
Genesis Park so many years ago.

FAMILY LEGACY
STEWARDSHIP
In Loving Memory of John Dalton Waite
December 1, 1994 – March 1, 2016
The Harvest Center created its first
endowment fund this year through the generous
support of friends and family of John and Mary
Waite. The John Dalton Waite Memorial Fund
was established in loving memory of their son
and will be used to support THC’s Transformation
Program - a comprehensive method for moving
men and women from homelessness to lives of
hope and self - sufficiency.
Dalton’s heart and empathy for those who were
struggling led him to reach out to the homeless
and those marginalized by our society. Dalton began serving at The
Harvest Center at the age of 11 with his parents
and sister, Ansley. He continued his quest to help
others while living in Boston by connecting with the
city’s homeless population. Dalton’s own personal
struggle with bipolar disorder gave him the ability
to engage others who faced similar struggles. Even
in the midst of his own challenges, Dalton was a
radiant source of hope to those around him and
through this Memorial Fund will continue to bring hope to others.

Women of Vision
Our mission is to create a
community where individuals
affected by homelessness, poverty
or unemployment are empowered
through our transitional programs
and transformed by the love and
ministry of Jesus Christ.
“For I was hungry and you gave Me food, I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger and
you took Me in; I was naked and you clothed Me; I was in prison and you came to Me. If you’ve done
it to the least of these, you’ve done it to Me.”
Matthew 25:35-40
