About the summer Youth Programs
The summer Youth Programs are sponsored by the PA Writing & Literature
Project (PAWLP), West Chester University (WCU), select area school districts,
and several private locations.
•

•
•
•
•
The goals of the program are:
to inspire students to love writing and reading
to introduce students to the tools they need to become better writers
to encourage students to collect writing ideas in their notebooks
to stretch students’ capabilities in writing and reading
to help students learn to read like writers
to help students see themselves as writers with individual voices, unique
in their manner of expression
Classes are small, averaging 13 - 15 students. Students are grouped by age and
grade level, and our teachers are prepared to teach multi-age classes. All students
contribute self-selected writing to a literary anthology.
PAWLP, a National Writing Project site, is a professional network of teachers
who promote student achievement through quality instruction.
All directors, site coordinators, and teachers are Fellows of the
National Writing Project as well as experienced classroom teachers.

Classes for younger students
Grade level spans indicate participants should be completing one of these grades.
Codes end in YW/YR: Young Writers/Young Readers - Grade levels
vary by location. See charts for dates, times, and codes. Learn the writing process in a
relaxed, non-threatening camp environment. Try age-appropriate strategies and gain confidence
in your writing. Compose, share, explore new genres, edit, and confer. You will also share and
explore quality children’s literature. (Two-weeks at West Chester University (WCU), in sponsoring school districts, and in private locations.)
L-Buzz: What’s the Buzz? grades 3 - 4 Come discover the amazing insects
and plants at Longwood Gardens. Take daily excursions into different parts of the gardens, and
use your discoveries as inspiration for reading and writing in a workshop setting. (One-week)
L-Tree: Meet Me in the Treehouse, grades 1 - 2 Join us for a week-long
adventure at Longwood Gardens inspired by the exciting tree house exhibit. You will have the
opportunity to read, write, and explore nature in this wonderful setting. (One-week)
P-SPP: Spies, Plots, and Petticoats, grades 3 - 5 History writers join us
as we discover the people, places, and events swirling around George Washington. Spies, Plots,
and Petticoats will take you on an historic pathway to Cliveden, Peter Wentz, Graeme Park, and
Pennypacker Mills. Hear Benjamin Rush speak about a woman’s questionable patriot loyalty,
discover the schemes of Major John Andre and follow in the footsteps of George Washington after the Battle of Germantown ... experiences designed to rush your quill pen to paper. (One-week.
This class spends one day at Cliveden, Peter Wentz Farmsted, and Graeme Park, and two days at
Pennypacker Mills.)
P-WA: Winged Adventures, grades 3 - 5 Unpack your imagination at Penny-
packer Mills. Witness a meadow scene where swallows swirl, meadowlarks crouch, and hawks
hunt. See nature through the young eyes of John Audubon and Roger Tory Smith. Then travel in a
world with fabulous winged creatures ... dragons, fairies, elves, and more. Winged Adventures at
Pennypacker Mills will inspire you to write, entwining the real with the fantastical. (One-week)
RTM-NJ: Nature Journaling: It’s a Jungle Out There! grades 3 - 5
Do ugly bugs intrigue you? Do tadpoles make you giddy? What happens when writers use the great
outdoors for inspiration? Explore the traditions of John Muir and other naturalists as we celebrate
the sights, smells, and sounds of summer. This camp is for those who like the feel of the sun on their
face and creepy crawly things under their feet. (Two-weeks, Rose Tree Media SD)
VF-YW/YR: Young Writers/Young Readers at Valley Forge National
Park, grades 3 - 4 This location will provide a unique experience, combining everything the
site has to offer with writing and reading. Students will have the opportunity to walk in the footsteps
of history. In addition, special appearances and presentations by actors portraying colonial soldiers
and General George Washington will “bring history to life.” (Two-weeks, Valley Forge National Park)
WCU-RWA: Reading and Writing with the Arts, grades 1 - 2 Enjoy
playing bongo drums, singing, moving, and listening to music combined with writing and reading
activities. Also explore creating art and song with your writing. (Two-weeks at WCU)
WCU-ST1 and WCU-ST2: Storytelling, grades 4 - 6 Listen and watch
professional and amateur storytellers to learn the “secrets” of telling a tale. You will tell two stories, one that you will write in class and another from stories you have read in class. A variety of
storytelling genres will be explored. (Two-weeks at WCU)
2
Classes for older students
Grade level spans indicate participants should be completing one of these grades.
Codes end in -MS or -HS: Creative Writing Workshop for Teens,
grades 6 - 8 (Code ends in -MS) and grades 9 - 12 (Code ends in -HS)
In a workshop setting, you will create, revise, and share expressive pieces in a variety of genres.
Activities that stimulate creativity, practices that hone the writer’s craft, and critical analyses of
masterworks help give form to your voice. (Two-weeks at West Chester University and in sponsoring school districts.)
LMER-GFSF: Gothic, Fantasy, and Science Fiction Reading and Writing, grades 6 - 12 You who enjoy indulging the creative expression of your imagination
may wish to ruminate upon “a few rank sedges ... shadowy fantasies,” consider the “visible mark of
earthly imperfection,” and contemplate the places that are “not down on any map; true places never
are.” Join us as we consider the craft of classic and contemporary masters within compelling literature
and apply various literary techniques to our own written creations. (Two-weeks, Lower Merion SD)
LMER-M&S: Young Readers and Writers in Math and Science,
grades 6 - 12 Join a multifaceted community of science and mathematics lovers, whose
focus inspires reading and writing across diverse genres! Discover why physicists have a great
sense of humor, how math is actually another language, and where to find the intersection of logic
and logos. (Two-weeks, Lower Merion SD)
M-CWA: Creative Writing for Teens Using the Visual Arts,
grades 6 - 9 Explore connections between the visual arts, writing and literature in this in-
spiring workshop. Work with local writers and artists while developing new skills and approaches
to your work. Let the James A. Michener Art Museum’s collection inspire creations in the written and visual arts! (One-week)
WCU-CWR: On-line Creative Writing and Reading, grades 5 - 7
Do you love to chat and write on-line? Join other students in on-line reading and writing groups.
We’ll write poetry, essays, and much more! We will also read and discuss summer reading novels,
read a novel together and chat about it, write reviews of favorite works, give and receive feedback,
and publish electronically. This on-line class is perfect for young writers and readers who are on
vacation, have scheduling conflicts, or just love the idea of on-line literature circles! Also, there
will be two (optional) opportunities for real time meetings on West Chester University’s campus.
WCU-SF: Fantasy, Science Fiction, and Horror Writing, grades
6 - 12 If you’ve spoken “to the darkness, alone, in the bitter watches of the night” then come
and explore three powerful genres that can put a story to what you’ve seen. (Two-weeks at WCU)
WCU-YWC1 and YWC2: Young Writers on Computers, grades 3 - 12
Work in a West Chester University computer lab to compose and edit your work using Microsoft
Word. Share ideas, confer, receive feedback, and respond to other students’ writing. You will also
design your own anthology page layout on the computer. Word processing skills are required.
(Two-weeks)
Registration is limited.
Registration must be received at least one week prior to the first day of
class. Many classes fill prior to the deadline date.
