Random or Not? (SP.1)
1. You want to know which store shoppers at the mall visit the most. You ask each 10
person as they enter the mall which store they will visit.
2. You want to know which store shoppers visit the most. You enter the toy store and
survey 20 customers.
3. A hip-hop radio station wants to know what type of music is the most popular. They ask
their listeners to call in and select their favorite type of music.
4. You want to know what the 7 grade students think of their science class. You poll 100
random 7 graders.
5. You want to survey the students in your school about their exercise habits. At
lunchtime you stand by the salad line. You survey every student who bought salads for
lunch.
6. Your teacher is selecting students to help set up for a school dance. Only 5 students are
needed to help. She puts everyone’s name in a hat and selects 5 names without
looking.
7. A cell phone company selects 500 customers from its database and then surveys those
customers to find out if they like their phone service.
8. The owners of a local game store sends 150 random customers a survey.
9. You want to know how many students in our school have broken a bone. You survey
the members of the football team.
10. The movie theater wants to know what genre of movies their customer enjoy. They
survey all the people attending the children's matinee.
11. You randomly chose 50 books from the school library to find the average length of each
book.
12. You want to find out how many students in school must finish their homework before
they can watch TV or play video games. You survey all the students in the cafeteria
during your lunch period.
13. You ask 50 people in your local grocery store which grocery store is their favorite.
14. A bank casually selects customers throughout the day to ask them if they are pleased
with the service they receive.

Biased or Unbiased (SP.1)
Decide if each of the following surveys is biased or unbiased. Explain why you made that choice. If a
survey is biased, describe how to change it so that it will be unbiased.
1. Kyle is at Guntersville State Park and is taking a survey to see what Alabama residents think of
the access fee to the park.
2. Monique is surveying people at the mall to determine the most popular television show.
3. Trevor is outside a local car dealership taking a survey on the most popular car. He is asking
everyone who enters what make of car is their favorite
4. Eric wants to find out the most popular football team at a game between the home team and
the visiting team. He surveys a group of people standing in line for tickets.
5. There is a plan being discussed to build a skate park in a neighborhood. The city wants to have
feedback to see if this is going to be used and well received by the community. The city sends
out a newsletter and asks for people to respond with their opinion.
