The Sanctuary The sanctuary is the area of the church, elevated from the nave floor, in which is found the altar, ambo, tabernacle, and presidential chair. The green Carrere marble from Italy, outlined in Mexican brown/amber marble, forms an eight-pointed star. A symbol of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the star is green representing the green pastures of Psalm 23 from which the Lord restores our souls, leads us in right paths, and prepares a table for us. (cf. Ps 23:2-3, 5) Five steps lead from the floor of the nave to the predella, or floor of the sanctuary. Four additional steps are ascended to the ambo, and three more to the tabernacle. Five loaves blessed by Christ to feed 5000, four Gospels, and three Persons in the Trinity. 5+4+3=12, the number of apostles.
