GRANGE NEWS
A note from the Head of the Grange
One of the great honours of this position is to be a member of the IAPS, the professional association for Heads of
Independent Prep Schools and each term we are fortunate enough to meet with other Heads across South Wales
and South West England, usually at another prep or senior school. Yesterday I was delighted to accompany both Mrs
Phillipses to Hazelgrove Prep School in Somerset for some training and the opportunity to bid farewell to a colleague
who has worked tirelessly throughout his career as the Head of Hazelgrove and is retiring at the end of this term. It is
always refreshing to get a little bit of ‘space’ from the general day-to-day life of a school and to be truly reflective whilst in
the company of inspirational Heads who are all dealing with very similar pressures and issues. I would recommend that
everyone gets ‘out of the office’ once in a while, it can be quite invigorating!

KAYAK ASSEMBLY
Wednesday’s assembly was led by members of
the Monmouth School Kayak Club. Alf from VI2
and Teal, Hamish and Ben from Form III, came in
and described some of the fun activities they take
part in and showed the boys the equipment that
they use. They have successfully inspired some of
the boys who can’t wait to join the club.
SPEEDSHOT RESULTS
Over 100 boys took part in the Grange Sponsored Speedshot, with the aim of providing the school
with new football goals and kit. Everyone was hugely enthusiastic and competitive, recording some
very powerful shots. Prizes will be awarded to the winners and runners up in each year group,
and the best fundraiser, during our next Celebration Assembly. The fastest shot of the day was an
amazing 45mph. The sale of hot dogs and burgers in the evening proved equally popular and the
parents competition was won with a tremendous strike at 59mph. Thank you to all of the boys who
took part and to everyone who supported the event.
PREP IV VISIT SWALEC STADIUM
On Monday, Prep IV visited the SWALEC Stadium, Cardiff, home of Glamorgan County Cricket Club.
After an introductory talk on the history of the ground, the boys embarked on a behind the scenes
tour. This included a visit to the press box, Sky TV studio, players’ dining room and unique access to
the players’ changing rooms. After lunch, the boys took the opportunity for some cricket training using
the impressive indoor practice facilities. Overall, they enjoyed a rare insight into the workings of an
International Sports Ground. This visit served to inspire both teams on Wednesday as they recorded
victories against Tockington and Cardiff and the Vale. A special metion must go to Gus, for his maiden
century.

PREP I & II COMPUTING
CLUB
The boys in Computing Club have been enjoying
developing their coding skills, by completing
fun activities on Scratch. They all successfully
programmed their own working drum kits this week,
creating their own instructions to do so.
PREP IV BECOME CODE BREAKERS
Prep IV were treated to a morning of code breaking activities, led by visitors from GCHQ. They explored the history of code and learned about some
of the different coding methods, including: substitution, steganography and cryptography. They learned how these were applied in real life situations,
through looking at artefacts from World War II. The boys also enjoyed encrypting and decrypting codes of their own.
CHEWING GUM
Over the past few weeks, there have been a number of incidents of chewing gum being found in
school and damage has been made to school property. We kindly request that you do not allow your
child to bring chewing gum into school.
