“Installing guide for Air Pure Le” 2014.08.12 ① Preparation before you start Remove all the switch covers and curtain rales and other removable items. Protect what you can't remove with covering sheets and masking tape. Turn off all electrical appliances like electrical fans and air conditioners while installing Air Pure Le so as not to make any flow of the air inside the room. Such flow of the air dries the installed wallpaper too rapidly, which can cause gaps between each sheet. ② Wall Surface Preparation The way of wall surface preparation is different depending on the material of wall. Observe the condition of the wall before you start and adopt appropriate means. ※For more details, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. ※We show the following tools and materials for your reference. You can use any item which is made of similar substances and has similar functions with those. Water absorbing wall Veneer board, plaster board, concrete, mortar, fabric wall, other natural wall Pre-coat the wall with the water-based sealer. (Tools and materials 1) Water absorbing wall absorbs the paste so it should be pre-coated with a water-based sealer, using a roller before hanging the pasted wallpaper onto it. Tool.1 Water-based sealer Spread the sealer over the surface of wall by moving the roller to back and force just one time. Use the roller with short and thin hair. (Tools and materials 2) (Thinner and shorter hair can spread the pressure more equally over the surface.) Tool.2 Roller ※Attention Not to put too much sealer onto the wall. One time back and force movement of the roller is enough. Too much sealer can interfere and weak the adhesion of Air Pure Le onto the wall. The Paste-type sealer cannot be used, because it is not absorbed by the wall and peeled off with the wall paper. Some wooden walls, such as veneer board and chipboard tend to be stained with some soluble substances contained in the wood, so they have to be prepared with sealer against such stain beforehand. Even though, the sealer is not able to coat the surface perfectly, so the wooden wall can be stained with the trace of substances seeped from tiny gaps between the wall and the sealer. (See the image) Let the sealer completely dried by leaving the coated wall for about one night after processing. Make sure it is fully dried by touching the wall with your hand before going to the next step. If the wall which is coated with sealer needs to be smoothed with putty, the putty must be mixed with some synthetic resin substances before being put onto the wall. Non Water absorbing wall Metal wall, printed wall, tile, glass, mirror, etc. ■Pre-coat the wall with primer. (Tools and materials 3) Use the adhesive primer without diluting. Spread the primer with a roller and a sponge evenly and smoothly over the surface, in the way like waxing your car. Use the roller for painting, not the one for sealer because it cannot spread the primer evenly. (Tools and materials 4) Tool 3. Primer ※Attention 1. If the primer is not spread evenly and smoothly, bubbles or discoloration can be caused on the surface of the Air Pure Le. 2. Clean the wall surface before you start. If you put the primer onto the metal wall, give the rustproof treatment to the wall beforehand, otherwise the metal could be rusted by grease marks, primer and the liquid contained in glue. Tool 4. Roller and Sponge Painted wall Any wall colored with water or oil borne paint, painted plaster board, etc. Pre-coat the wall with a synthetic resin glue. (Tools and materials 5) Observe the wall before you start. If there are cracks or other damages on the painted surface, smooth them all with a sander and a trowel before you start. (Tools and materials 6) Tool 5. Synthetic resin glue Use the synthetic resin glue without diluting. If the glue is inconvenient for pasting, dilute it with some water up to 10%. Spread the glue evenly and smoothly with a roller and a brush after putting it onto the surface of the wall. (Tools and materials 7) Tool 6. Sander and Trowel ※Attention Plasticizers or dyes contained in the oil borne paint could exude and stain the Air Pure Le, so those painted walls must be coated with primer before hanging the wallpaper onto it. Be sure that the primer spread over the wall has completely dried, taking an enough long time, before hanging the Air Pure Le onto it. Otherwise, the causative substances in the paint could exude and emerge on the wall paper as “oil stains”. ※Attention Remove any dirt, especially grease marks, from the surface of the wall before you start. Tool 7. Roller and Brush ③ Surface smoothing Smooth any irregularity, hole, crack and gap on the surface of the wall by filling them with putty. (Tools and materials.8) When you put putty onto the wall which is pre-coated with sealer or synthetic resin glue, mix the putty with some synthetic resin substances before putting it on. (Tools and materials.5) (Tools and materials.8) Putty, Putty board, Putty knife Usually the putty takes 60~120 minutes to dry and become hard. If it is mixed with hardener, it dries in a shorter time. (Tools and materials.9) Put a plenty of putty on the holes and other irregularities on the wall, moving the trowel from side to side. Then remove the extra putty with the trowel from top to bottom. (Tools and materials.5) Synthetic resin glue (Tools and materials.9) Hardener Put the finishing putty on or sand the processed surface, if necessary. ④ Paste preparation Harder paste is better. Please refer to the following ratio when you mix the paste with some water. Paste: water = 1: 0.5~0.8 Be careful not to add too much water. The amount of paste needed for 1m×1m area is 150~180g. ⑤ Hanging the Air Pure Le ~from Cutting to Pasting Place the Air Pure Le sheets where the ends of each one are not located on or near the joints or the putty filled area of the wall. ※Attention Near or on the joints or putty filled area of the wall, adhesion of the pasted wallpaper to the wall tends to be weaker than on other parts of the wall, which can cause peeling and gaps of the wallpaper. ※Attention Place all sheets in the same direction like the following picture. The color of each sheet can look differently if they were not in the same direction. 【Right way】 All the sheets are in the same direction. 【Wrong way】 All the sheets are not in the same direction. Cut the wallpaper into 92cm width stripes. Be sure to leave 3~5 cm allowances at the both sides of each sheet. (We call these allowances “ears” of the wallpaper.) Trim the wallpaper at the top, bottom and corner of the wall. To make it better, put an enough pressure on the paper after t rimming it with some allowance. When you paste the wallpaper, cover it with the joint tape to prevent the paste from adhering to the surface of the paper. (Tools and materials.10) Joint tape The pasted wallpaper needs to be left for 10~20 minutes before being hung onto the wall. We call this interval “Open time”. During then, the paste becomes a good condition to stick onto the wall. It takes a little longer (20~30 minutes) in winter. Do not paste the wallpaper more than you can hang at one time. ※Attention Air Pure Le is breathable and the paste dries quickly. So be careful not to leave the pasted paper for longer than its Open time, otherwise the paper will stick to itself. Once the wallpaper adhere like that, peeling it apart without damaging is really difficult. Be careful not to crease the pasted wallpaper while drying. For that reason, you should not put any pressure on the pasted sheets after folding them or pile them up. ⑥ Hanging the Air Pure Le ~from Hanging to Finishing~ Hang the Air Pure Le from the top to bottom of the wall, ensuring that the sheet hung straight. Be sure to leave an about 5cm allowance for trimming at the top and bottom of each sheet. Then smooth the paper with your hands onto the wall and then remove bubbles using a paperhanging brush. (Tools and materials.11) (Tools and materials.11) Paperhanging brush ※Attention Smooth the paper onto the wall vertically. If you do that horizontally, the paper will spread widely, which can cause gaps after it dried. After removing bubbles, put an enough pressure on the top, bottom and corner of the wallpaper, using a corner spatula (bamboo spatula) to fold the paper with a crease at each part. (Tools and materials.12) (Tools and materials.12) Bamboo spatula Corner spatula Trim the wallpaper allowance at the top and bottom of the wallpaper using a paper knife guided by a ground spatula. (Tools and materials.13) To trim the allowances straight, be careful not to let the blade off from the wallpaper until you finish trimming one sheet. To make it better, adjust the spatula first and then move the knife. ※Attention Change or sharpen the blades often to ensure that you always use the sharpest blade. Hung the subsequent sheets from the top to bottom of the wall, ensuring that the paper is straight. In order not to make any gap at joints, cover the “ears (allowances of each sheet’s sides)” of previous sheet with those of subsequent one. The wallpaper should be cut into its proper width (generally 92cm and some allowances) before being hung, so as not to damage the wall while cutting the paper after hanging it onto the surface of the wall. 道具・材料 13:地ベラ (Tools and materials.13) Ground spatula ※Attention If you cut the wallpaper after hanging it onto the wall, be careful not to damage the covering paper of the wall, sticking a joint tape and a base tape between the wall and the wallpaper. See the picture below. (Tools and materials.14) If you damage the covering paper of the wall, it will cause peeling and gaps of the wallpaper. (Tools and materials.14) Base tape 下敷きテープ Joint tape Base tape Previous sheet Covering paper Subsequent sheet Wall Image of cutting wallpaper after hanging it onto to the wall ※Attention Pulling the wallpaper too much widthways when you joint two sheets can cause gaps between them after drying. In the same way as hanging the previous sheet, remove bubbles using a paperhanging brush after smoothing the subsequent one with your hands. Then trim the allowances at the top, bottom and joint of the wallpaper, using a paper knife guided by a ground spatula. Be careful not to let the blade off from the wallpaper until you finish trimming one sheet. (Tools and materials.15) Joint support tape After trimming any allowance, remove the base tape and joint tape from under the wallpaper. You should use joint support tape to prevent making any gap or irregularity between each sheet. (Tools and materials.15) (Tools and materials.16) Joint roller Smooth the wallpaper gently and carefully onto the wall using a joint roller. (Tools and materials.16) When you hung the Air Pure Le onto the beams, protect the nearby sheets which already installed there with masking tape. To make it easier, the paper should be cut into an ideal size before you start. (Tools and materials.17) (Tools and materials.17) Masking tape Pull the wallpaper toward the wall a little, not too strongly, when you hang it onto the bottom of the beams. When you hung the Air Pure Le onto the posts, protect the nearby sheets which already installed there with covering sheets and masking tape. (Tools and materials.18) (Tools and materials.18) Covering sheets Fill the corners with joint caulk to the corner, if necessary. (Tools and materials.19) (Tools and materials.19) Joint caulk Measure the post and cut the wallpaper into its ideal size with scissors. Smooth the wallpaper onto the wall with your hands. Then trim its extra length, other than about 5cm allowances, using scissors. Remove bubbles using a paperhanging brush. Then trim the allowances, using a ground spatula guided by a bamboo spatula. Be careful not to smear the surface of the Air pure Le with the paste or other materials. If it gets dirty, remove any dirty mark quickly by patting it gently with wet towel or sponge which are tightly squeezed. ※Attention Don’t scrub Air Pure Le hard. Swipe its surface gently to avoid tearing the wallpaper. Don’t wash Air Pure Le. The wallpaper is easily damaged, stained by water and other liquid. ※Attention Any dirt left on the surface of Air Pure Le can cause discoloration or can interfere the function of the wallpaper, so remove it quickly and completely. We have a repair paste especially for the gaps, cracks and other damages of the Air Pure Le. We do not recommend you to use any other repair paste than that. You can order it in the same way as the wallpaper. Please contact us. (Tools and materials.20) (Tools and materials.20) Repair paste for Air Pure Le
