What is underneath our feet?
The Earth is approximately 3900 miles (6300km) from the surface to the centre- but what is it made up of?
THE CHALLENGE
To create a model showing the different layers of the Earth.
What do I need to be able to do?
We would like you to communicate your research by making a model showing the different layers of the earth. You
can be as creative as you would like!
Your final piece should be annotated / or have some attached information annotated with the key information about
each layer. This may include; temperature, gases, metals, minerals etc.).
How long do I have?
4 weeks- Your homework will be shared in class the week beginning: 22nd March 2016
How will I present my homework?
You will be randomly paired with another member of year 5 and then you will have the opportunity of sharing your
model and the information you have found out. Your partner will tell you what they liked about it and your teacher
will give you feedback on your project.
How can I manage my homework over 4 weeks?
Below is a suggested timetable of what you might complete each week.
Week 1 25.02.16 – 01.03.16
Week 2 03.03.16- 08.03.16
Week 3 10.03.16- 15.03.16
Week 4 17.03.16 – 22.03.16
Research the layers of the earth. Present your findings in
your homework book please.
Plan what you will make
Jot down a draft diagram and plan/annotate what you
will include on your information
Begin making your model/ diagram
Continue making your model/ diagram
Complete project and finish detail
Bring into school and share your work with a partner
What can I do if I do not have the equipment I need?
Year 5 teachers can be in classrooms at dinner time if you need a laptop or IPAD for research. All you need to do is
ask beforehand!
Children can use the library cards to collect books from the school library to help them.
Please ask if there are any resources you need to make your model and we will help in any way we can.
How will my work be marked?
