80G (Income Tax Exemption) Significance of the Project • Poverty in UP exceeds that of the 26 poorest African countries (*MPI by Oxford University and Human Development Initiative with UNDP) • U.P. has one of the lowest literacy rates in India (*Govt of India Bureau 2012) • Literacy rate in U.P. is 56.2% (*Census of India 2011) • Despite being the state capital, there are about 793 slums just in Lucknow (*Government data 2010) • Slum population as % of urban population in Lucknow is 40.2% (*Times of India 2013) • Lack of education makes children vulnerable to crime, injustice and social evil • Opportunities of education and good lifestyle can help children live a dignified life Goals and Objectives Vision: To strive to improve the quality of life of children Objectives: – Reach out to children who cannot afford quality education and take them beyond ‘just being literate’ – Set up Supportive After School Model in the heart of their residence – Improve the rate and level of learning by providing them classes daily – Focus on holistic development – Participation in early childhood – Stress on the education of Girls – Work on comprehensive education with importance to • English, Mathematics, Computer • Personality improvement (stress on etiquette/manners), Ethics, Sports, Arts • Hygiene and Health – Regular counselling of children Modus Operandi Survey of the slum to identify non-school going children Divide the children into two: Tenderfeet (basic) and Advancers (one level above basic) Set up Open Study Centre, Run classes six days a week post school hours Focus on minimum standard of pre-primary education • Children in higher grades acquire knowledge grade appropriate • 80-85% of our children get enrolled in schools • Children explore their creative skills, their rate of learning improves, their confidence level goes up • More girls being able to continue their education • Children move towards becoming self-reliant • General improvement in quality of
