Y ouths Become Savings Sleuths This April What kid wouldn’t want to throw on a trench coat, dust off an old magnifying glass and slap on a play mustache to become a detective for a day? Children everywhere are intrigued by the thrill of mysteries and the detectives that solve them. Little do these kids know they also have the ability to tap into detective mode by investigating ways to save and becoming a credit union savings sleuth during the month of April at the credit union. Introducing children to their inner savings sleuth will help lead them down the path of saving. Visit KSC Federal Credit Union during the week of April 21-27 and help us celebrate National Credit Union Youth Week™. This year’s theme, “Savings Sleuth, Solve the Mystery,™” shows youth and teens how KSCFCU can help them use their own instincts and credit union resources to meet financial goals. Whatever young sleuths are saving for, we at KSCFCU can give them the clues they need to investigate ways to save. Through a series of activities, the young savings sleuths in your life will uncover the mystery of saving. So stop by and get in on the action at our Youth Week events. When you make a deposit into your KSCFCU account during Youth Week, you’ll get an entry into a drawing for a Kindle. Bring your young savings sleuths into KSCFCU, and choose from the many “gadgets” we offer to unravel the mystery of saving. KSCFCU membership is open to all of your family members who live, work, or worship in Brevard or Volusia County. Celebrate National Credit Union Youth Week, and be a “Savings Sleuth”. K SC F CU Con g rat u l at e s “A Po sitive Fut u re” Wi n n e r In an effort to reward our local students who “make the grade” and encourage students to do well, KSCFCU presented student members with an opportunity to show us their “A’s”, and enter to win. One winner was drawn from submitted entries. Emily O. from Edgewood Jr./Sr. High School in Merritt Island won a Kindle. Congratulations to our winner, and great job to all who entered from getting terrific grades! Keep working hard and enter again in June for our second semester “A Positive Future” drawing. In about a week, you will likely begin getting small shoots as the seeds grow. In a little while, you’ll have fresh herbs to use, and a pretty, decorated herb garden you grew yourself. “B” Is For Beginning A Budget A budget is a plan. Begin your budget with pencil and paper. Draw a line down the center of a page. On the left, write down money you get regularly - from an allowance or from doing extra chores. On the right, write what you spend and what it is for. Do this for a couple of weeks. Then on another page, start grouping your expenses (your purchases and how much you spent) into categories. Some examples of categories are food and drink, events, toys and games, clothes and so on. Now do your math. Add up the items in each category. Did you spend too much or about the right amount? Should you be adding to your savings to buy things in the future? Now take a third piece of paper. Draw a line down the center. Put your income on the left. Put your expense categories, plus “savings,” on the right. Now write down how much of your income should be spent on each. This is your budget. It’s a plan on how to spend and save your money instead of doing it randomly. Make sure you deposit your savings into KSCFCU, and get the most for your money with a budget. April 22 Is Ea rth Da y Earth Day is a special day for all of us to celebrate the Earth and all it gives us. The first celebrated Earth Day was on April 22, 1970 and more than 20 million Americans participated in the first Earth Day celebration. Here are a few Earth Day fun facts: Earth Day was founded by Senator Gaylord Nelson, from Wisconsin, and the day is credited for creating the environmentalism movement. It is held on April 22 because that is considered the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere and the first day of fall in the Southern Hemisphere. Earth Day is now celebrated every year by more than a billion people in 180 nations around the world. Only 11 percent of the Earth’s surface is used to grow food. Recycling is very important. If every newspaper was recycled, we could save about 250,000,000 trees each year. In America only about 27% of all newspapers are actually recycled. Over 20,000 Hershey’s Kisses are wrapped each day, using 133 square miles of tinfoil. This tinfoil is recyclable. Recycling one aluminum can saves enough energy to watch a TV for 3 hours. You and your family can help the Earth in many ways by recycling your plastic, glass, aluminum cans, paper, etc. It may not seem like a lot, but when everyone recycles, it can add up to a lot. Make Earth Day every day - every one should do their part, no matter how small. www.kscfcu.org THIS CREDIT UNION IS FEDERALLY INSURED BY THE NATIONAL CREDIT UNION ADMINISTRATION KSC Federal Credit Union 300 S.
