Pool Lifeguard (5 Day Course)
Australian Lifeguards are world-renown for their high levels of skill and knowledge in accident
prevention and rescue response. The current minimum industry requirement for employment as a
Pool Lifeguard at a Swimming Pool or Aquatic Facility is the Royal Life Saving Pool Lifeguard
certificate.
This course will provide participants with the skills and knowledge in accident prevention,
administration, public relations, education, scanning, communications, basic and advanced water
rescues in an aquatic facility environment.
This combined First Aid / Bronze Medallion / Pool Lifeguard training program is a convenient and
intensive course that can save you time and money. It will provide participants with all necessary
industry qualifications required to work as a Pool Lifeguard in an aquatic centre in Western Australia.
This is an entry-level qualification that can lead to an exciting career in the aquatic recreation
industry.

Day 1-2
Provide First Aid HLTAID003
The Provide First Aid HLTAID003 training course teaches the skills and knowledge required in order
to treat and manage various injuries and illness in a community or workplace setting until the
emergency services arrive. This course incorporates HLTAID001 Provide cardiopulmonary
resuscitation and includes the use of a defibrillator (AED).

Reasonable level (AQF level 3) of spoken and written English

Adequate level of physical fitness to enable completion of practical components of course

learning environment

SISAQU002 – Perform basic water rescue
This course will enhance your personal survival skills while providing you with the
knowledge and skills to develop the level of judgment, technique and physical ability
required to safely carry out water rescues. Having gained this qualification individuals are now
eligible to complete the Pool Lifeguard Award.
Participants are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability to complete this
course

Pre-requisites:
Nil - However, it may be beneficial to have completed the Bronze Star
Award.

Participants are required to have a reasonable level of fitness and swimming ability
Minimum Age Requirements: 16 years

Course content includes:
This course will enhance your personal survival skills while providing you with the knowledge and
skills to develop the level of judgment, technique and physical ability required to safely carry out
water rescues
Assessments include:




Demonstrate effective Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
Swim 400 meters (100m freestyle, 100m breaststroke, 100m survival backstroke, 100m
sidestroke) continuously within 13 minutes.
Timed Tow: Swim 50 meters, then tow a patient of similar size 50m within 3 min 15 sec.
Theory on aquatic environments, water safety, rescue techniques, resuscitation and basic
injuries.




Participants must bring a long sleeve shirt and trousers to swim in for part of the practical
component of the course.
Survival and Rescue Skills: Demonstrate a range of survival techniques and appropriate
rescues for a range of different aquatic environments.
Spinal Injuries: Basic management of a suspected spinal injury in shallow water.
Rescue Initiative: Combine all of the skills and knowledge on rescues and utilise it to rescue 2
drowning casualties.
Day 4-5
Pool Lifeguard SISCAQU006 - Supervise clients in aquatic locations, SISCAQU007 - Perform
advanced water rescues, PUAEME001B - Provide emergency care

Pre-requisites:
Current Bronze Medallion or equivalent lifesaving certificate.
Current Senior First Aid certificate (HLTAID003 Provide first aid)
Entry requirements:


Reasonable level (AQF level 3) of spoken and written English.
Adequate level of physical fitness to enable completion of practical components of course
Minimum Age Requirements:
16 years (generally 18 years to be employed).
Work Placement Requirements:
On the Job Assessments (participants will be required to complete up to 6 hours On the Job at an
aquatic facility under supervision of an experience and qualified supervisor/manager or Senior
Lifeguard).
You have2 months after the practical course to complete the Lifeguard On-the-Job Assessment
Certification: On successfully completing both the Pool Lifeguard training course and the on-the-job
component, candidates will receive the following:
Statement of Attainment that includes the following unit of competence

SISCAQU002 - Perform Basic Water Rescue

SISCAQU006 - Supervise clients in aquatic locations

SISCAQU007 - Perform advanced water rescues

PUAEME001B - Provide emergency care

PUAEME003C - Administer oxygen in an emergency situation

Course Structure
The Pool Lifeguard Course is split into 3 components:
1.
Online Theory e-Learning component to be complete PRIOR to attending the course date
2.
In class Practical and Assessment (Course date at an Aquatic Facility)
3.
On the Job Assessment (At an Aquatic Facility of your choice)
To complete the final assessment of the course you must be able to access an aquatic facility to
complete the three workplace activities for the on-the-job assessment. The assessment will be done
online and submitted to RLSSWA for marking.
