Presented in Jorgensen’s candle-lit cabaret setting, the high energy show will treat Queen fans and rock music lovers to a journey back in time as the band, led by powerhouse vocalist and Freddie Mercury look-alike/sound-alike Mullen, delivers near note-for-note renditions of immortal Queen classics like “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Crazy Little Thing Called Love,” “Radio Gaga,” “Killer Queen,” “Under Pressure,” “We Will Rock You,” and many more. Cabaret fare, dessert, alcohol, and other beverages will be available from a cash-only bar when doors open at 7:00 pm. Concert gets underway at 8:00 pm Gary Mullen & The Works have been entertaining audiences globally since the band’s formation in 2002. Their ability to meticulously recreate the magic and mega-watt energy of a live 1980s Queen concert performance - including Freddie Mercury’s impassioned vocals and signature on-stage posturing - has gained Mullen and his bandmates worldwide critical acclaim. “I became a big Queen’s fan when I was about 4 years old,” says the Scottish-born Mullen. “Queen was the first band where I really felt, ‘Wow, look at these guys!’ I fell in love with Freddie’s movements and the way he sang… just everything.” Mullen says his career as a Freddie Mercury tribute singer got started when his mother and wife secretly submitted a tape of him to UK’s televised talent contest, “Stars in Their Eyes”. “I got a phone call from the show’s producer who told me he got my application and asked me to come in for a live audition,” said Mullen. “I told him I didn’t apply to be on the show, but that I’d come in and give it a try just for laughs. Somehow I made it through the semifinal heats, went on the live grand finale and won first place, and literally three weeks later I was out performing.” Despite his success on the TV show and his newfound local celebrity status, Mullen said he had mixed feelings about embarking upon a new career as a vocalist in a tribute band. “It felt like a huge gamble because I would be leaving behind a steady job as a computer salesman, and I already had one kid with another on the way,” says Mullen. “But when just a few months later I found myself on stage in front of 20,000 at a New Year’s celebration concert in Glasgow, I knew I had made the right decision.” When asked what he’s learned after more than 15 years of touring and thousands of Queen tribute concert performances in venues around the world, Mullen smiles. – MORE – Quick Reference Cabaret Event One Night of Queen Gary Mullen & The Works Date Fri, Mar 31, 8 pm Place Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts 2132 Hillside Road UConn campus, Storrs, CT Tickets $45/40, $35, $30 Box Office 860.486.4226 Mon–Fri, 10 am–5 pm The Box Office window is also open for walk-up ticket sales 90 minutes before showtime. ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN, continued “You can’t fall flat on your face, and you can’t forget the words,” says Mullen. And if you do forget the words, you can’t make them up because there are so many die-hard Queen fans who sing along and know every syllable. They’ll come up after the show and say, ‘Excuse me, you sang lie instead of die”.’ I always give them a thumbs-up and say, ‘Well done for spotting that.’” Comprising Gary Mullen & The Works are Gary Mullen, lead vocalist, Davie Brockett on guitar, Jonathan Evans on drums, Billy Moffat on bass, and Malcolm Gentles on keyboards.
