From the District Governor
I want to thank the Lions and their
clubs in our district and others for the
cards and condolences in the sudden
death of our son, Steven. Lion Sandra
and I also thank you for the time after
the Multiple District Convention to
try to get our feet back on the ground.
I met with 1st VDGE Karen, 2nd
VDGE Jake, PDG Bill Erickson,
and PDG Dale (Tom) Thompson to
sort out committees and committee
members.
District Newsletter Editor Phyllis
Pross and Cabinet Secretary Jeff Hunt
have worked with us to finish putting
together the new ‘green’ book for the
printer. Our goal is to have the book
ready to pass out at the mini-cabinet
meeting in Zilwaukee on July 17th
at 6:00 pm. Club secretaries have
an important place in this process, if
they submit their PU101s in a timely
fashion. Which reminds me, please use
the official forms from the lionsclubs.
org webpage.
Lion Sandra and I were at the
Lennon Lions Club to install their
new officers. They invited their branch
club, Holiday Shores, to enjoy the
festivities. I was surprised by PDG
Robert Sturgis. He presented me with
a Melvin Jones Award! I think Lion
Sandra had something to do with that.
A great time was had by all.
The next day I received a phone
call from PDG Bert Rivette that Lion
Clarence “Frenchy” Rivette had passed
away. I first met Frenchy when our
district was ‘BIG D’. He was not only
Helping the Needy Makes Lions Roar
a great Lion, but a great humanitarian.
Lion Sandra and I next went
to Cass City to install their Lions
Club’s new officers. They had some
new members for me to install, also.
That’s a special treat for me. Lion
President Kelly Smith assisted me
with the installation of officers, and
then presented scholarships to several
students who had been carefully
chosen to be those most likely to use
their awards well.
Our next stop was at Bridgeport
to participate with the Lions Club in
their parade. Lion Sandra rode on the
Lions’ float with the club members,
and I rode in a 1929 Ford two-seater.
Oh, the good old days are fun to think
about, but air conditioning can’t be
beat! We had a lot of fun. The rain
held off until we arrived home.
Then, off to Essexville-Hampton
Lions Club to install their new
officers. Again, the rain held off, and
we had another great meal. I always
have the out-going president assist me
when I install new officers. Lion Don
Holsinger did a great job, and we also
initiated a new podium built by a club
member.
It was great to be invited to install
new offficers for the Fenton Lions
Club. Lion Sandra and I had another
great meal. Of course we always have
great food at any Lions’ function.
After Dr. Jessica Bearer and I finished
the installation, there were many
wonderful awards presented by Bob

Don Hartwick, DGE 11D-1
“Helping the Needy Makes Lions
ROAR”
From the Immediate Past District Governor
Don Hartick DGE has asked me to
do this final newsletter, even though it is
for the July edition.
We’ve had a great year around the
District but it’s because the Lions we
have made it that way.
I want to take this opportunity
to thank the cabinet members and
the committee chairs for not only
doing their jobs, and doing them very
well, but for adding value to the District.
A special thanks to Lion Jeff Hunt (my
right hand) and Lion Wile Engelhardt
(my left hand). You made my year, and
I’ll never forget all the wonderful things
you two have done to keep me on my
toes, organized and in the game.
To the club presidents, secretaries
and club members, you are the backbone
of the District. We can operate the way
we do due to your efforts and support.
I would like to encourage you to keep
doing the things you have been doing to
help those less fortunate and take a look
at what else you might want to take on
in the upcoming year.
My journey as Governor ends, but
the legacy lives on. I probably won’t go
down in the District’s annals as one of
the best Governors ever, but no one can
say that I didn’t do my part to further
the cause of Lionism.
We need to continue to support not
only the State Projects but the District
ones as well, and let us not forget the
Pedia-Cam.
Helping the Needy Makes Lions Roar
To the PDGs, a hearty thank you
for your guidance, tolerance, and
patience. I appreciated the mentoring
and will try to do the same for those
who follow in my footsteps. Your kind
words and support along the way did
not go unnoticed. Thank You - Thank
You - Thank You.
The 1st Lady and my travels
around the District were severely
limited this month, but here is what
we were up to. Surprise visit to the
Bay City Middle Grounds for the
first steak fry of the summer season by
the Bay City Lions Club on June 1st.
Then off to St. Charles on June 2nd
for lunch and the installation of their
officers. Hang tough, Joe. You’ve got
lots of support.
After that came the sudden loss of
Lion Frenchy Rivette. Our usual Lions
who perform our Lions Memorial
Service were either out of town or
unavailable, so I stepped in and filled
their shoes. My apologies to those
Lions who arrived but not in time to
walk in with the rest of us as a group.
When the Funeral Director said “we’re
ready, and it’s time to go”, then I guess
it was time to go.
Saginaw Downtown Lions (Home
Club of the Gov.) was next on the
agenda. New member induction and
officer installation took place at the
Castle Museum. A guided tour of the
facility commenced after dinner. It was
educational and informative. The Lion

Tamer has once again in his possession the club bell.
Don’t forget that the Int’l. Convention is coming
up shortly (7/4-7/8) in Seattle. We will see some of our
District and State Lions there. Don’t forget your new
parade shirts.
Judy and I will be going out there on July 2nd, and after
the convention, on July 9th, we’ll be cruising to Alaska
with three other couples for a week.
The Mini-Cabinet Meeting, Banner Night, and
Governors Appreciation Dinner are all events that if you
haven’t put them on your calendar as yet, you should.
From the First Vice Governor
I will be attending the other outgoing Governors
Appreciation Dinners from around the state as a final
farewell and to honor their service. I can honestly say my
waistline didn’t get any larger this past year, and neither did
my head.
In closing, Judy and I will see some of you around the
District as we continue to encourage you to do good works
for Lionism. We will support you in whatever way we can.
We wish all of you safe times, good journeys, and
may God’s Blessings continue to enrich your lives as you
have ours.
Lion “Doc” Mc Cray DG
(soon to be a has been)
From the Second Vice Governor
What a great year I had with everyone this year. I am
looking forward to visiting the clubs. If you would like me
to come on a special date, please let me know.
Let’s all reach out to someone new this year, share a
Coke with them, tell them what we do, have them help on
a project. Remember if we don’t ask them to join us, how
can they get in? Think back on when you joined the Lions,
and why you stayed in the club. Share it. Don’t forget that
we are all Lions, and each one of us joined for a different
reason.
Let us bridge the gap between new and old Lions. Just
because your club tried something years ago, and it didn’t
work, doesn’t mean that you can’t try it again. Be open for
new ideas. Listen to what new members say and make sure
you change with the times. Go to other clubs and see what
they are doing. We need to share what we have learned and
why we love being a Lion.
I’m on my way to Seattle for the International
Convention this year to see old friends and make new ones.
We will be seeing our 2nd host daughter from 2003 that we
hosted thru the Lions Youth Exchange. We have hosted 21
kids, and it is always great to hear from them or see them
again. This is why I joined Lions.
1st Vice District Governor
Karen Ates
Remember the Youth is our Future!
Fellow lions
I would like to thank all of you for a great year. We got
a lot of things done, but keep in mind, our work is never
done. Let’s keep things going for the summer.
I have started my training as 2nd VDG. There is so much
to learn. I will be seeing all of you this year. Remember I am
here for you, if you need me.
To all of my zone chairs, Lion Matt Lance, Lion Shari
Johnson, Lion Willie Underwood, thank you for all of your
work. It has been great working with you. I would like to
also say thank you to Lion Don Hartwick and Lion Karen
Ates, 1st & 2nd VDGs, for all their hard work. Last, but
not least, the guy I had to suck up to all year for making his
signs disappear, Governor Lion Gary McCray. Thank you
for your service to our district and state. It has been great
to be a part of your team. A special thank you to First Lady
Lion Judy for all your service.
This month I visited Mayville Lions Club and installed
officers, and Lion RG Barnum installed three new
members. We had a good meal and great time. I am looking
forward to working with everyone as your new 2nd VDG.
Everyone Have A Great Summer.

Lions Clubs Around the District
Lennon Lions Club gave support to Durand Middle
School to participate in “Destination Imagination”
competition. Students will trail to Knoxville, TN for
the competition. Their project concerned making
their school “environmentally green”.
Past District Governor Bob Sturgis was presented
with the Lions Presidential Medal from
International President Scruggs at the District
Convention. His service to LCIF merited the 2nd
highest award in Lionism.
Chesaning Lions June 7th @ 2 p.m. we are having ice
cream at the Chesaning Nursing Home to say thank
you to the residents for packaging our jelly beans for
the Easter Egg hunt.
St. Charles Lions: May was a very busy
month for the club. First we started off
the month with Highway Pick-up.
Next on the agenda was the White Cane Sale. Then came
the Beta day. Thanks to the Lions who participated in
these activities. The golf outing is set for August 20 at
Kimberly Oaks (see flyer in the newsletter).
Joined forces with the St. Charles High School for the
annual beautification day. Our project this year was
the Lumberjack park. Trimming shrubs, cutting trees,
raking and replacing wood chips, etc around the Bird
Observatory. Old and young worked side by side making
all of St. Charles a pleasure to look at. See photos below.
Thanks from PDG Bob Sturgis
I would like to express my Thanks to the Lions
of 11D-1 who answered my plea to become
Contributing Members of LCIF. Because I was
asked by LCIF to set a loftier goal for donations
this year, and the Clubs of 11D-1 always contribute,
I decided to see if I could sign up 25 Contributing
Members at $20.00 each for a total of $500.00.
LCIF Leaders gave me their blessing to reach this
goal. Little did I know that the Great Lions of
11D-1 would respond in such an overwhelming
way. The final count was 59 Contributing Members
for a Grand Total of $1895.00. Some of the Lions
contributed $50.00 and $100.00.
The Lions of our District have always responded
every time I have asked. I have been very fortunate to
get such Great support. My job as the LCIF District
Coordinator has been made easy because of your
help.
Lions Bob Loomis and Jim Slick

Thank You again for your continued support, PDG Bob Sturgis
