O
n May 30, 2015, at
2:34 a.m., the Kansas
City, Kansas Police
Department responded
to reports of a shooting in the
2500 block of Ridge Avenue.
Upon arrival, officers located a
Hispanic female in the street, dead
from an apparent gunshot wound.
The 16 year old victim has been
identified as Jamie J. HernandezZubia, Hispanic Female, She
was a resident of Kansas City,
Kansas. Hernandez had been
missing since running away in
2012, from a foster care facility in
Wathena, Kansas. According to
some witness reports, Hernandez
was pushed out of a vehicle at the
location.
The KCK Police department
has located the white truck. It is
described as late 90s or early
2000s F-150 Flare Side truck ,
regular cab, tinted windows with
20” chrome rims, a “touch screen”
device in the cab. It may have a
bullet hole in the tail gate.

his past week, Julian Castro, the U.S. Department
Secretary of Housing and Urban Development,
and Congressman Emanuel Cleaver, toured
Villa Del Sol and Posada Del Sol, on the city’s
Westside.
Castro’s stop in Kansas City is part of an effort
by the newly appointed secretary to gain a better
understanding of housing and urban development
issues facing American communities. The two facilities
were built in part with federal funds.
“We know there is a tremendous need out there.
When we look at senior housing that is the fastest
growing demographic in our country. Baby Boomers
are going to need a place that is affordable to live,”
said Castro.

effort to end predatory payday
lending, a practice that creates
a financial debt trap for many of
Kansas City’s most vulnerable
families.
“Kansas Citians of all ages need
to understand the importance of
using money wisely to prepare for
a financially stable future,” Mayor
James said. ‘Triple-digit interest
rates on small-dollar loans imposed
on working families is not the kind
of financial service we want in
Kansas City.”
The kick-off will be held from 10
a.m. to noon on Thursday, June 11
at the Gem Theater, 1615 E. 18th
St., Kansas City, MO.
Communities
Creating
Opportunity (CCO) is hosting
the event. Also invited are
national, state and local elected
leaders; congregation ministers;
social
service
organizations
serving the working poor and
youth; and community leaders
in neighborhoods where many

payday lending establishments are
located.
The Rev. Mike Roach of St. James
Catholic in Kansas City, a clergy
leader with CCO said: “Our faith
traditions are very clear: Industries
built on exploiting the working poor
are immoral and must change. The
abuses and excesses of the payday
lenders are well-documented and
continue to shock the conscience
of Americans everywhere. God’s
people must demand better.”
The event will include a screening
of “Spent: Looking for Change,” an
American Express documentary
about the effect of payday loans on
individuals and families.
Speakers also will discuss the
payday lending profile of Kansas
City, including remarks by a Kansas
Citian who has been a payday
borrower, and an overview by a
local attorney of Missouri payday
lending laws that have enabled the
industry to take root and thrive in
this state.
The event will conclude with
a discussion of how to influence
new payday lending rules being
proposed
by
the
Consumer

Financial Protection Bureau, a
federal agency that makes and
enforces consumer-finance rules
with the objective of empowering
consumers to take more control
over their economic lives. A public
comment period on the federal
rules is expected to commence in
August.
CCO estimates that payday
lending drains about $26 million
annually from the local Kansas
City economy. While a credit-card
lender can legally charge an annual
percentage rate of 36 percent, the
average payday loan in Missouri
has an APR of 455 percent.
CCO research also shows
there are more payday loan
shops in Missouri than Walmarts,
McDonald’s and Starbucks stores
combined.

Latino
businesses
were recognized in
mid-May
for
their
impact throughout the metro
community. Hispanic Lifestyle,
an independently produced
television program, hosted
the award luncheon with the
support of Wells Fargo Bank.
The event was held at Kansas
City’s historic Union Station.
The honorees were chosen
because of the positive
image they promote for
the Latino community. They
were nominated by Hispanic
Lifestyle’s
audience
then
selected by Richard Sandoval,
producer of Hispanic Lifestyle.

Su hermano, Juan Pablo

Taskforce (LAT). The day was
filled with remembrances and
testimonials acknowledging
friends and family members
killed in an act of violence
over the years.
“I think this is an opportunity
for those people who aren’t
affected every day, like
some of the closer family,
and gives them a chance to
come together and cherish
that person who passed,”
said Andrea Garcia, a
guest speaker for Day of
Remembrance.
Her brother, John Paul
Garcia Sr., was shot and
killed on August 8th, 2010 in
the Westside.
Although
Garcia
has
forgiven
her
brother’s
perpetrator,
other
family
members have struggled to
cope with their grief.
“My dad on the other hand
harbors a lot of resentment.
Which is natural ­– that was
his baby (son). But I just feel
like God has really come
and sheltered my heart and
allowed me to forgive, but I
can’t even explain why, but
I do pray for the other one’s
family.”
The LAT works with families
similar to Garcia’s to provide
personal advocacy, such
as counseling and public
advocacy
assistance
for
victim’s families. Their goal is
to raise awareness and assist
families who are having to go
through this ordeal.
Additionally, LAT works
in conjugation with the
Kansas City Missouri Police
Department to help solve and
bring justice to these violent
cases.
“I want to commend
them on behalf of the chief,
Darryl Forte, and all police
officers and all aspects of
investigating violent crimes.
Thank you for remembering
your families, how they lived
Andrea Garcia
and celebrating their lives by
reaching out to others,” said
KCMO Police Officer Chato
Villalobos.
Julia Campos, whose son
was murdered several years
ago, attended the event. She
took the opportunity to talk with
police officers in attendance
asking them to check on her
case to see if there are any
new developments.
For her it’s been over a year
that the police department
has contacted her about her
son’s case.
Although
crime
has
decreased in the last few
years, the KCPD Daily
Homicide Analysis, shows
that 76 homicides were
committed in Kansas City last
year with 25 still unsolved.
According
to
Officer
Villalobos, nine times out
of ten, suspects think they
can get away with an act of
violence.
As people work towards
finding a solution, others
fear getting caught leaking
information that can help
solve a case.
Villalobos
advises
that
citizens should always call the
police department regardless
of how old the information to
a particular case may be.
Crime Stoppers takes tips
from anonymous sources.
They have operated in the
Kansas City area for about
33 years. When a tip comes
into the hotlines, the tipster is
assigned a code number.

As he walked the property of
Villa Del Sol, Edwin Lowndes,
executive director Housing
Authority of Kansas City,
explained the collaborative
effort by his office and
Westside Housing to provide
two and three bedroom
apartments for families and
to convert the neighborhood
into a desirable location.
“I
am
glad
to
see
partnerships that make things
like this happen,” said Castro.
“It is a tremendous challenge
to get resources; and budgets
in DC have been very tough
and we need to find new ways
to stretch our resources. The
good news is we have strong
champions like Congressman
Cleaver doing their part to
ensure that the affordable
housing needs are met.”
Before leaving Villa Del
Sol he told Lowndes that he
applauded the work they
have done in Kansas City.
“I want to congratulate the
Housing Authority and their
partners in building a project
like this with federal dollars.
You have hit the mark. You
are doing a good job and are
ensuring that folks have good
housing,” said Castro.
While he looked at one
success story on the Westside,
sitting just east on the other
side of the street is the former
West High School.
The
building has been an eyesore
to the neighbors for over two
decades.
Congressman
Cleaver was adamant about
selling the school building
to a private developer. His
preference would have been
to sell it to Westside Housing,
so that they could provide a
market rate/section 8 housing
development.
“It would have been in the
best interest of this community
for the school district to give
that property to Westside
Housing,” he said, “instead
a private developer is coming
in and my fear is the people
living over there are not
the people who live on the
Westside now,” said Cleaver.
The Foutch Brothers, LLC
purchased the building and
plan to build residential
apartment units that are
expected to rent at market
rates.
A fact that has
Congressman Cleaver up in
arms about developments
with market rate pricing that
could lead to gentrification in
the community, thus driving
out those who live in low cost
housing on the Westside.
“They are going to convert
the former school building
into market rate condos and
people in the urban core will
continue to be displaced,”
said Cleaver.
When
Hispanic
News
asked
where
misplaced
residents will find housing,
Cleaver replied, “Probably
into some housing that is
indecent. They can’t afford
to live over there,” he said
pointing at the old West High.
Hispanic
News
has
covered the school district’s
repurposing
initiative
concerning the West high
property. A public meeting
was held to provide a
project update and to garner
community
feedback
on
proposed changes to the
original development plan.
After a review of the proposed
changes and the community
feedback, the Kansas City
Public Schools approved the
requested changes.
The
Foutch
Brothers
will provide the Westside
community with complimentary use of the auditorium,
and a small meeting and art
gallery space as well as use of
the outdoor volleyball court.
They will coordinate with local
community organizations to
ensure that local Westside
residents receive information
about residential rates and
availability.
Secretary Castro was asked
about the possible gentrification
problem.
“What we need
to do is make sure we have
partnerships on the ground
that keep creating housing as
affordable as possible.”
Gilbert Guerrero, vicepresident of Youth Development
and Supplemental Education
for Guadalupe Center, asked
Castro during his meeting with
the Black/Brown coalition,
to give details on how HUD
can help the Westside with
gentrification.

Rosedale Ridge complex in
Kansas City, Kansas has been
a nightmare for residents,
many of them living without
basic utilities. For months
complaints were turned in and
deadlines for improvements
were not met. The building is
being shut down.
Castro did not tour Rosedale
Ridge but did say that about
300 residents of the complex
have received HUD vouchers
to find a new place to live.
“Sometimes landlords do
not live up to the obligations
they have.
When that
happens, we need to make
sure we enforce compliance,”
said Castro.
Several
years
ago,
Kansas City faced a serious
problem when the Housing
and Economic Development
Finance Corp took millions
of federal dollars into lowincome
housing
projects
across Kansas City, but
struggled with waste and
fraud.
“I
am
confident
that
improvements have been
made on this. We always
have to be vigilant and make
sure the money that gets
allocated is well spent,” he
said

Cecilia Aguirre has returned home to our celestial resting place in
the Heavens - Cecilia “Chila” Aguirre passed away Sunday, May
24, 2015 at a nursing home in Olathe, Kansas. She was formally
from the Kansas City, Missouri’s “Westside” Community. Our
older sister made many friends in the greater Kansas City area
during her 73 years in life. She touched many lives and loved
children as her own. She dedicated her life to Christ many years
ago along with our late mother, Eusebia Lopez de Aguirre. Cecilia
will always be embraced as a warm and caring soul that gave much
of herself to those who needed comfort and assurance. She leaves
five brothers and four sisters behind to pray for her new passage in
time. They include Manuel, Frank Ruperto Joseph and Ted. Her
sisters are Teresa, Margaret, Maria and Elizabeth. All her family
and friends will always cherish her memory and for the blessing of
her presence, here on earth. Sleep well Dearest Cecilia and wait for us in our greatest hour as we embark on our own Journey.

AMADA GUERRA
Amada Guerra (Valdivia), 99, passed away on Saturday May 30,
2015.
She was born on September 13, 1915 in New Mexico, a daughter of
Joseph and Maria (Perez) Valdivia. Amada was a loving daughter,
sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She
was tough and stood as an example of resilience and love. She
always wanted to take care of her family, cooking and cleaning
for everyone, and giving life advice. Amada always said what she
was thinking, never held back and showed us all what it means to
be true to yourself.
She is predeceased by her husband of 56 years, Gilbert Guerra,
Sr.; her son, Gilbert Guerra, Jr.; her brothers, Albert Valdivia and
Salvador Valdivia; and sister, Jennie Martinez (Valdivia.) She is
survived by her daughters, Esther Wozny and husband, Richard Wozny, of Omaha, Neb., Irene
Valenzuela and husband, Alfonso Valenzuela, of Kansas City, Mo., Gloria Delgado of Omaha,
Neb., Grace Collins of Kansas City, Mo., Patricia Zaner and Jim Zaner of Kansas City, Mo.,
Rachael Heisey and Raymond Heisey, Jr., of Overland Park, Kan., Rebecca Picard and Craig Picard
of Lee’s Summit; 20 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
Visitation will be held at McGilley Midtown Chapel, 20 W. Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO,
on Wednesday, June 3, 2015 from 6-8 p.m., where the rosary will be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Mass

was so frustrated with life on the outside that he said he was ready to break
probation and let them take him back to prison. (If you missed these columns,

Look Huevón, I get that adjusting
to the real world is difficult, and
when you believe that the good life
is three meals a day and a warm
place to stay, then, wow … Prison is
a great deal!
Everything about your question
tells me that you have not yet learned
how to take responsibility for your
own conditions in life. Taking
responsibility for your actions is the
art of living on the outside. Mainly
because accepting responsibility for
your thoughts and actions is the only
way to thrive in the real world. Take
employment, for example. Without
a job, you will not have the money to
rent your own apartment or buy a
house or
a car.
And
a s
long
a s
you
believe that you don’t need to work
to get what you need, you will find
yourself in prison again.
The thing is that I know that even
in prison you have to “earn” a living.
It’s called a hustle. To hustle in
prison is to get the things you need
on the inside even when you have
no money. It is a type of bartering
system. Some hustles are “legal.”
For example, drawing a picture in
exchange for someone else’s dessert.
But, as you know, many prison
hustles are very illegal. One
homeboy who served time in la
pinta (prison) told me about how
he would steal a half a ham from
the prison kitchen where he worked
and then “sell” slices of it to fellow
inmates in exchange for stamps,
custom haircuts, and extra time on
the phone. He said that he would
tie the ham around his waist with
a string and then tuck it neatly into
his baggy, jail house pants. And right
under the noses of the guards, he
would walk out of the kitchen with
this ham down his pants until he
got back into his wing. I thought his
story so was outrageous that I wanted
to see if this were even possible. So
I went to the store and purchased a
half a ham and some string. When I
got home, I tied the ham around my
waist and stuffed it into my pajamas.
When I looked into the mirror, all
I could see was a huge bulge in the
front of my pants. It looked as if I
had overdosed on Viagra! How the
hell could the guards have missed
that?
I know that there are dudes in
prison who will hustle their own
momma out of $30 bucks. They
will have their moms, their girls,
whomever, to buy them a brand new
pair of tennis shoes. Then they will
turn around and “sell” that same pair
of tennis shoes for two pouches of
tobacco… the equivalent of $5. Then
they will take those two pouches of
tobacco and trade them for two little
tiny nothing cigarettes of drugs. Are
you freakin’ kidding me?!?! All day,
everyday, the answer is, “Yes!” And
not a kind of “yes.” The answer is
“Hell Yes!!!” AND “I’ll give you a
hand job while we’re at it.” I mean
it’s crazy what you guys will do in
prison to get what you want!
So, why is it that you can’t get
what you want and need on the
outside? Because all you learned
to do in prison was to eat, shit,
and lift weights. And if you were
involved in the criminal elements,
you also did drugs, made drugs,
and hustled honest people out of
their hard-earned money. You did
all of this rather than learning how
to do an honest hustle by accepting
responsibility for your actions
and learning a productive trade or
vocation.
So to me, Huevón, it sounds like
you have no purpose in your life.
When your life has purpose, you
see meaning in everything that you
are going through even if what you
are experiencing is painful. That’s
because even in the pain you know
that it is all for a reason: To learn and
grow and become a better person.
Without struggles, we become lazy
and complacent. When life is easy,
we wander around waiting for the
next thrill. And before you know
it, you not only have wasted your
life but you have hurt yourself and
others in the process.
It is time for you to break the
chains of la vida hueva (the lazy
life). The only way to turn your
life around is to be willing to see
what got you into trouble in the
first place. Do you run to la Virgen
Maria (the Virgin Mary) and make
her a dozen promises of how you
will change if she saves you? Do you
light a church candle and pray for
God’s help and then go out and do
the same desmadre (chaos) that got
you into trouble in the first place?
How many second chances do you
need to figure this one out?
So get out of victim mode and stop
blaming others for your situation in
life. Accept that change does not
happen overnight, in a couple weeks,
or even in several months. Change is
a process. And a real man takes care
of himself and does not allow others
to do this for him. As you begin to
make better choices, you will find
that life becomes easier to manage.
And soon you will come to see that
while freedom comes with a price,
this freedom is worth all the blood,
sweat, and tears to make the good
life happen.

un coche. Y mientras que tú consideres que
no es necesario trabajar para conseguir lo que
necesitas, tú te encontrarás en la cárcel de
nuevo.
La cosa es que sé que incluso en la cárcel tienes
que “ganarte” la vida. Es una estafa. El hacer
estafas en la cárcel se trata de conseguir las cosas
que necesita en el interior, incluso cuando tú no
tienes dinero. Es un tipo de sistema de trueque.
Algunas estafas son “legales”. Por ejemplo, un
dibujo a cambio del postre de otra persona.
Pero, como tú sabes, muchas estafas de la
prisión son muy ilegales. Un amigo del barrio
que estuvo un tiempo en la pinta (prisión) me
habló de cómo robaría un medio jamón de la
cocina de la prisión donde trabajaba para luego
“vender” rebanadas a otros presos a cambio
de estampillas, cortes de pelo personalizados,
y tiempo extra en el teléfono. Dijo que iba a
amarrarse el jamón a la cintura con una cuerda

y luego meterlo perfectamente en su pantalón
holgado, los pantalones usados en la cárcel. Y
justo frente a las narices de los guardias, iba a salir
de la cocina con este jamón bajó los pantalones
hasta que llegara de nuevo a su ala del edificio.
Pensé que su historia era tan extravagante que
yo quería ver si esto era posible. Así que, fui a la
tienda y compré un medio jamón y un poco de
cuerda. Cuando llegué a casa, me até el jamón
alrededor de mi cintura y lo metí en mi pijama.
Cuando miré en el espejo, todo lo que podía ver
era un enorme bulto en la parte delantera de los
pantalones. ¡Parecía como si hubiera tomado
una sobredosis de Viagra! ¿Cómo diablos los
guardias no vieron eso?
Yo sé que hay tipos en prisión que estafarían
a su propia madre por $30 dólares. Tendrán
a sus madres, a sus hijas, quienes sean, para
comprarles un nuevo par de zapatos tenis.
Entonces ellos se van a dar la vuelta para
“vender” ese mismo par de zapatos tenis por dos
bolsas de tabaco, el equivalente a $5 dólares.
Entonces van a tomar esas dos bolsas de tabaco
y cambiarlos por dos pequeños cigarrillos de
drogas nada diminutos. ¿¡Estás tomándome el
pelo!? Durante todo el día, todos los días, la
respuesta es, “¡Sí!” Y no una especie de “sí”.
La respuesta es “Carajo, Sí !!!” Y “Te voy a dar
un trabajo de mano mientras estamos en ello”.
¡Quiero decir, que es una locura lo que tú vas a
hacer en la cárcel para conseguir lo que quieres!
Así que, ¿por qué no puedes conseguir lo
que tú quieres y necesitas en el exterior? Porque
todo lo que aprendiste a hacer en la cárcel fue
comer, defecar, y levantar pesas. Y si tú estuviste
involucrado en cuestiones criminales, también
consumiste drogas, elaborabas drogas y estafaste
a gente honesta quitándoles su dinero ganado
con mucho trabajo. Hiciste todo esto en lugar
de aprender cómo hacer una estafa honesta,
al aceptar la responsabilidad de tus acciones y
aprender un oficio o vocación productiva.
Así que para mí, Huevón, suena como que no
tienes ningún propósito en tu vida. Cuando tu
vida tiene un propósito, ves el sentido a todo
lo que está pasando, incluso si lo que estás
experimentando es doloroso. Eso es porque,
incluso en el dolor tú sabes que todo es por una
razón: para aprender y crecer y convertirse en
una mejor persona. Sin luchas, nos volvemos
perezosos y complacientes. Cuando la vida es
fácil, deambulamos a la espera de la próxima
emoción. Y antes de que te des cuenta, no sólo
has perdido tu vida, sino que te has lastimado a
ti mismo y a otros en el proceso.
Es hora de que tú puedas romper las cadenas
de la vida de hueva. La única manera de cambiar
tu vida, es estar dispuesto a ver lo que te
metió en problemas en primer lugar. ¿Buscas
a la Virgen María y le haces una docena de
promesas de cómo vas a cambiar si ella te salva?
¿Enciendes una veladora en la iglesia, y oras por
la ayuda de Dios, y luego sales y haces el mismo
desmadre (caos) que te metió en problemas en
primer lugar? ¿Cuántas segundas oportunidades
necesitas para darte cuenta ésta vez?
Así que olvida la posición de víctima y deja de
culpar a otros por tu situación en la vida. Acepta
que el cambio no sucede durante la noche, en
un par de semanas, o incluso en varios meses. El
cambio es un proceso. Y un hombre de verdad
se preocupa de sí mismo y no permite que otros
hagan esto por él. Al comenzar a tomar mejores
decisiones, tú encontrarás que la vida se hace
más fácil de manejar. Y pronto se llega a ver, que
mientras que la libertad tiene un precio, esta
libertad vale toda la sangre, sudor y lágrimas
para hacer que la buena vida suceda.

Prevent Type 2 Diabetes
Blood-Sugar Spikes by Eating
More Protein for Breakfast

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Individuals with
Type 2 Diabetes have difficulty regulating
their glucose – or blood sugar – levels,
particularly after meals. Now, University
of Missouri researchers have found that
Type 2 diabetics can eat more protein at
breakfast to help reduce glucose spikes at
both breakfast and lunch.
“People often assume that their glucose
response at one meal will be identical to
their responses at other meals, but that really
isn’t the case,” said Jill Kanaley, professor
and associate chair in the MU Department
of Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. “For
instance, we know that what you eat and
when you eat make a difference, and
that if people skip breakfast, their glucose
response at lunch will be huge. In our
study, we found those who ate breakfast
experienced appropriate glucose responses
after lunch.”
Kanaley and her colleagues monitored
Type 2 diabetics’ levels of glucose, insulin
and several gut hormones – which help
regulate the insulin response – after breakfast
and lunch. The participants ate either highprotein or high-carbohydrate breakfasts,
and the lunch included a standard amount
of protein and carbohydrates.
The researchers found eating more
protein at breakfast lowered individuals’
post-meal glucose levels. Insulin levels were
slightly elevated after the lunch meal, which
demonstrated that individuals’ bodies were
working appropriately to regulate bloodsugar levels, Kanaley said.
“The first meal of the day is critical in
maintaining glycemic control at later meals,
so it really primes people for the rest of
the day,” Kanaley said. “Eating breakfast
prompts cells to increase concentrations of
insulin at the second meal, which is good
because it shows that the body is acting
appropriately by trying to regulate glucose
levels. However, it is important for Type 2
diabetics to understand that different foods
will affect them differently, and to really
understand how they respond to meals,
they need to consistently track their glucose.

how much physical activity people have
gotten that day or how long they have
waited between meals.”
Kanaley said that although it would be
helpful for individuals with high blood sugar
to eat more protein, they do not need to
consume extreme amounts of protein to
reap the benefits.
“We suggest consuming 25 to 30 grams
of protein at breakfast, which is within
the range of the FDA recommendations,”
Kanaley said.
Kanaley’s study recently was published in
the Journal of Nutrition. The research was
funded in part by the Egg Nutrition Center.

Young-Min Park, Timothy Heden, Ying Liu,
Lauryn Nyhoff, John Thyfault and Heather
Leidy.
The Department of Nutrition and
Exercise Physiology is jointly administered
by the College of Agriculture, Food and
Natural Resources, the College of Human
Environmental Sciences and the School of
Medicine.

A Debt Of Gratitude
As we all age, life can be
challenging. Recently, Beatrice
Herrera found herself in a
difficult situation heading off to
church.
I lost my balance and fell down
as I got to the last step at Sacred
Heart Guadalupe Church in
Kansas City’s Westside for the
10 a.m. mass. I do not remember
anything until I heard voices
saying get in an ambulance and
I said no, no ambulance.
Anyway, it’s not about me. It’s
about the three people I saw,
my angels that God sent to take
care of me. I have to learn to
listen to people ,,, not to take
stairs or steps inside or outside
(of building).
One of my angels was a pretty
lady, named Loretta. She was
going back and forth to the
washroom to get wet towels to
put on my left eyebrow because I
was bleeding. The left side of my
face was so swollen and I had to
have three stiches.
My brother, Jerry Montes,
took me to the ER at St. Luke’s.
My left wrist is still wrapped up.
But I am doing very well. There
are no words to express my
gratitude for all of you Loretta,
Anthony and the one I forget
his name, but Anthony will tell
him for me for all you’ve done.
Thanks to my three angels and
to my God. Bless them. I would
like to tell them thank you thank
you thank you!
