When Sadness Won't Go Away Everyone feels sad sometimes. That’s really true when something bad happens. But what if your sadness doesn't go away? You may have an illness called depression. Symptoms of depression People who are depressed sometimes have these feelings: • They don't enjoy things as much. • They feel like a failure. • They feel helpless and hopeless. • They feel tired often. • They feel sad every day. • They feel restless or worry a lot. Change in behavior People who are depressed may do these things: • They may sleep too little or too much. • They may change the way they eat and lose or gain weight. • They may have aches and pains. • They may cry a lot. • They may think about killing themselves. You are not alone. Many people get depressed. If you have any of the signs or feelings listed above, call your doctor. He or she may send you to a counselor. Depression can be treated, and you can have a better life.
