January’s “Drink More Water” Wellness Challenge Welcome to 2017! We encourage everyone to take the New Year, New You Pledge, where you focus on making one small change a month. Making small, measurable, attainable, and realistic goals increases your rate of success! In January we challenge you to “Drink More Water”. Some benefits of drinking water include: It can help control calories o Instead of drinking sugary beverages laden with calories, water contains zero calories o It also makes us feel fuller so we consume less calories It helps keep skin looking good It helps the body lubricate joints It flushes out wastes and toxins It helps the body regulate temperature The general advice is to consume eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day. This guideline differs per individual due to age, gender, activity level, temperature of their environment, health conditions, and water they consume through foods and beverages. Below are some simple tips from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to increase your water intake: Carry a water bottle for easy access when you are at work of running errands. Freeze some freezer safe water bottles. Take one with you for ice-cold water all day long. Choose water instead of sugar-sweetened beverages. This can also help with weight management. Substituting water for one 20-ounce sugar sweetened soda will save you about 240 calories Choose water when eating out. Generally, you will save money and reduce calories. Add a wedge of lime or lemon or a slice of ginger root to your water. This can help improve the taste and help you drink more water than you usually do. Walk to the nearest water fountain and have a drink. You’ll get some steps in too! Every day you remember to drink extra water put a check mark on the calendar.
