CommonSymptomsofStrepThroat • Sorethroatthatusuallystartsquicklyandcancausepainwhenswallowing • Afever • Redandswollentonsils,sometimeswithwhitepatchesorstreaksofpus • Tiny,redspotsontheroofofthemouth • Swollenlymphnodesinthefrontoftheneck Othersymptomsmayincludeheadache,stomachpain,nauseaorvomiting.Someonewithstrepthroat mayalsohavearashknownasscarletfever. Thesearenotsymptomsofstrepthroatandsuggestthatavirusisthecauseoftheillness:cough,runny nose,hoarsenessinthevoiceandconjunctivitis(pinkeye). ASimpleTestGivesFastResults HealthcareprofessionalscantestforstrepbyswabbingthethroattoquicklyseeifgroupAstrepbacteria arecausingasorethroat.Astreptestisneededtotellifyouhavestrepthroat;justlookingatyourthroat isnotenoughtomakeadiagnosis.Ifthetestispositive,yourhealthcareprofessionalcanprescribe antibiotics.Iftherapidstreptestisnegative,butyourhealthcareprofessionalstillsuspectsstrepthroat, thentheycantakeathroatcultureswabtotestforthebacteria,butthoseresultstakealittlelonger. AntibioticsGetYouWellFast Thestreptestresultswillhelpyourhealthcareprofessionaldecideifyouneedantibiotics,whichcan: • Decreasethelengthoftimeyou’resick • Reduceyoursymptoms • Helppreventthespreadofinfectiontoothers • Preventmoreseriouscomplications,suchastonsilandsinusinfections,andacuterheumaticfever (arareinflammatorydiseasethatcanaffecttheheart,joints,skinandbrain) Youshouldstartfeelingbetterinjustadayortwoafterstartingantibiotics,butcallyourhealthcare professionalifyoudon’tfeelbetterafter48hours.It’sbesttostayhomefromworkorschooluntilthe feverisgoneandyouhavetakenantibioticsforatleast24hourssotheinfectioncannotspreadtoothers. Besuretofinishtheentireprescription,evenwhenyoustartfeelingbetter,unlessyourhealthcare professionaltellsyoutostoptakingthemedicine.
