WehavehadanothergreatweekoflearningandgrowingattheWinthrop
School!
Thisweekwasthekick-offfortheChangeIsSimpleprogram,anenvironmental
scienceandsustainabilitycurriculumforourK-5gradelevels.Theyuseproject
basedlearningtoworkhands-onwiththestudentssotheybecomeawareof
howscienceisinterwovenintoeverypartoftheirlives.Thestudentsbecome
“scientists”and“engineers”toworkon21stCenturyissuesaffectingour
environment.TheChangeisSimpleTeamwillbehereseveralmoretimesthis
yeartocontinuethelearningandmakethisanongoingandengaging
experience.WethanktheFriendsofWinthropforsupportingthisinitiativeto
helpourstudentsmakeapositivechangeintheworld.
OurMCAStestingsessionsbeginnextweekwiththeEnglish/LanguageArts
section.Grade3willtestinthemorningsonMonday,TuesdayandThursday
andGrade4willtestonTuesday,ThursdayandFriday.Pleasedoyourbestto
avoidanytardyarrivals,vacations,ordoctorappointmentsonthedayyour
childwillbetesting.

studentstoshowtheirRedSox’sspiritbywearingred,whiteorblue.Thelunch
menuwillreflectOpeningDaybyofferinghotdogsandchipswithcarrotsand
anicecreamsandwichasanextrapurchase.GoSox!
TheBSOfieldtripforallGrade3and4studentsisWednesday.Pleaseplan

Worriedyoursorethroatmaybestrep?
Strepthroatisacommontypeofsorethroatinchildren,butit’snotverycommoninadults.Healthcare
professionalscandoaquicktesttodetermineifasorethroatisstrepthroatanddecideifantibioticsare
needed.
HowYouGetStrepThroat
StrepthroatisaninfectioninthethroatandtonsilscausedbygroupAStreptococcusbacteria(called
“groupAstrep”).GroupAstrepbacteriacanalsoliveinaperson’snoseandthroatwithoutcausingillness.
Thebacteriaarespreadthroughcontactwithdropletsafteraninfectedpersoncoughsorsneezes.Ifyou
touchyourmouth,noseoreyesaftertouchingsomethingthathasthesedropletsonit,youmaybecome
ill.Ifyoudrinkfromthesameglassoreatfromthesameplateasasickperson,youcouldalsobecomeill.
ItisalsopossibletogetstrepthroatfromtouchingsoresontheskincausedbygroupAstrep.
CommonSymptomsofStrepThroat
• Sorethroatthatusuallystartsquicklyandcancausepainwhenswallowing
• Afever
• Redandswollentonsils,sometimeswithwhitepatchesorstreaksofpus
• Tiny,redspotsontheroofofthemouth
• Swollenlymphnodesinthefrontoftheneck
Othersymptomsmayincludeheadache,stomachpain,nauseaorvomiting.Someonewithstrepthroat
mayalsohavearashknownasscarletfever.
Thesearenotsymptomsofstrepthroatandsuggestthatavirusisthecauseoftheillness:cough,runny
nose,hoarsenessinthevoiceandconjunctivitis(pinkeye).
ASimpleTestGivesFastResults
HealthcareprofessionalscantestforstrepbyswabbingthethroattoquicklyseeifgroupAstrepbacteria
arecausingasorethroat.Astreptestisneededtotellifyouhavestrepthroat;justlookingatyourthroat
isnotenoughtomakeadiagnosis.Ifthetestispositive,yourhealthcareprofessionalcanprescribe
antibiotics.Iftherapidstreptestisnegative,butyourhealthcareprofessionalstillsuspectsstrepthroat,
thentheycantakeathroatcultureswabtotestforthebacteria,butthoseresultstakealittlelonger.
AntibioticsGetYouWellFast
Thestreptestresultswillhelpyourhealthcareprofessionaldecideifyouneedantibiotics,whichcan:
• Decreasethelengthoftimeyou’resick
• Reduceyoursymptoms
• Helppreventthespreadofinfectiontoothers
• Preventmoreseriouscomplications,suchastonsilandsinusinfections,andacuterheumaticfever
(arareinflammatorydiseasethatcanaffecttheheart,joints,skinandbrain)
Youshouldstartfeelingbetterinjustadayortwoafterstartingantibiotics,butcallyourhealthcare
professionalifyoudon’tfeelbetterafter48hours.It’sbesttostayhomefromworkorschooluntilthe
feverisgoneandyouhavetakenantibioticsforatleast24hourssotheinfectioncannotspreadtoothers.
Besuretofinishtheentireprescription,evenwhenyoustartfeelingbetter,unlessyourhealthcare
professionaltellsyoutostoptakingthemedicine.
Washinghandsisstillthebestprevention,aswellasnotsharingutensilsorcupswithothers.Itis
especiallyimportantforanyonewithasorethroattowashtheirhandsoftenandcovertheirmouthwhen
coughingandsneezing.
