MARYLENE MEY and WHIT LANE
Meet the Artists
Catherine Russell
Catherine Russell (Host, Vocals ) is a native
New Yorker, born into musical royalty. Her
father, the late Luis Russell, was a pioneering pianist/composer/bandleader and Louis
Armstrong’s longtime musical director. Her
mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering
bassist/guitarist/vocalist who performed
with Mary Lou Williams and International
Sweethearts of Rhythm. Russell’s professional life began early. After graduating
with honors from the American Academy
of Dramatic Arts, she embarked upon
musical adventures with Carrie Smith,
Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper,
Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael
Feinstein, and Rosanne Cash. Her 2006
debut album Cat garnered rave reviews,
paving the way for her 2008 sophomore
release Sentimental Streak. Russell has
been a guest on Late Night with Conan
O’Brien, PBS’ Tavis Smiley Show, and
NPR’s Fresh Air, Piano Jazz, Mountain
Stage, World Café, and JazzSet. She has
won a prestigious German Record Critics’
Award and a Living Blues magazine critics’
poll. Russell’s third album, Inside This Heart
of Mine, reached No. 1 on JazzWeek and
Roots Music Report’s radio charts, while
also charting on Billboard and reaching No. 1
on iTunes jazz charts. A fourth album,
Strictly Romancin’, was released in February
2012 and was awarded Prix du Jazz Vocal by
L’Academie du Jazz in France. Russell has
performed on three continents and has been
a hit at major festivals, including Monterey,
Newport, North Sea, JazzAscona, and
Montreal, and at sold-out venues like Dizzy’s
Club Coca-Cola, the Kennedy Center in
Washington D.C., Scullers in Boston, The
Dakota in Minneapolis, and Yoshi’s in San
Francisco. Her repertoire features a selection of gems from the 1920s through the
present, vital interpretations bursting with
soul and humor. She won a Grammy Award
as a featured artist on the Boardwalk
Empire soundtrack, and her fifth album,
Bring It Back, was released in early 2014 on
Jazz Village. A sixth album, Harlem On My
Mind, was released by Jazz Village in 2016
and has received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Jazz Vocal Album. With an offthe-beaten-path song selection, sparkling
acoustic swing, and a stunning vocal
approach, Russell has joined the ranks of
the greatest interpreters and performers of
American popular song.

The Science of Jazz
Music & The Structure of the Universe
February 23 at 6:30pm
For the third year, Jazz at Lincoln Center presents
one of our most popular events: Science of Jazz.
This unique and intimate lecture series explores
the dynamic connection between the sciences
and jazz. This year’s edition will feature physicist
and musician Stephon Alexander in conversation
with saxophonist and composer María Grand.
Alexander and Grand will use musical samples to
illustrate how a physicist—or a jazz musician—
approaches the process of experimentation.
Attendees will discover how some leaps in
physics operate like jazz solos.
Dianne Reeves
February 10–11 at 8pm
Dianne Reeves will assuredly set the mood for this
beloved Jazz at Lincoln Center tradition as she
returns for the sixth time to seduce audiences with
songs and stories of love and romance. Her alluring
sound, fondness of love songs, and unusually
broad spectrum of sensual repertoire promises a
special Valentine's Day weekend performance.
With nuanced restraint and dynamics, Reeves
inhabits every story she spins into song. The fivetime Grammy Award winner has long revered New
York City and often chooses to spend her
Valentine's Day in this shimmering city of romance.
Of course, there's no better place to experience
this occasion with Reeves than her "home away
from home" in the center of the Big Apple, the ele- THE APPEL ROOM
