Dearbrothersandsisters,
TheCathedralofSaintJamesoccupiesacentralplaceinthelifeoftheDioceseofNorthernIndiana,and
in my own life. A strong and vibrant Christian community, theCathedral reaches out well beyond its
own doors – to the city of South Bend and to the diocese. I am profoundly grateful that my of ice is
located on its property; this gives me an opportunity regularly to receive the Cathedral’s ministry as
wellastocelebratetheEucharistatitsaltar.
Traditionally,cathedralshavefourkeyrolesinthechurch:



AcenterofspiritualandliturgicallifefortheDioceseofNorthernIndiana
Aplaceofpilgrimage,wherepeoplecometoprayandtoseektheheartofJesus
Acenterofurbanministry
Amodelparish,offeringencouragementtotheentirediocese.
The Cathedral of Saint James has embraced these roles with integrity and enthusiasm. People make
theirwaytotheCathedralfromnearandfar–totakepartindiocesanevents,topray,toseeaChristian
communitywonderfullyinvolvedinthelifeofthecity.TheCathedralitselfisgrowinginnumbersand
in spiritual depth, and it is a joy for me to point to Saint James’ as a model of deeply committed and

OurCommitmenttoTheCathedralofSaintJames
Through the years, generations of faithful people have responded to the need to build and maintain
whatisnowourhistorichouseofworship.Nowwetakeourownturnsasstewardsofthisbeautiful
and sacred structure. Our carefully-developed plans seek not only to preserve the architectural
characteroftheCathedralofSaintJamesbutalsotoheightenitsfunctionalityforworshipaswellas

Our fortunate location downtown allows for the opportunity to
provide signi icant outreach right outside our doors. Currently, we
haveseveralactivitiesthatareembracedbythelocalcommunityand
hosted by the Cathedral’s facilities and resources, including St.
Margaret’s House, Bridges out of Poverty, the Strawberry Festival,
and, in recent years, the Craw ish Boil. The Cathedral also currently
hosts several in-house activities, including a choir, Christian
education,athrivingyouthgroup,acolytes,altarguild,andmen’sand
women’sgroups.Ourcurrentplansforrenovationarelargelyfocused
on enabling the church to provide further outreach and activities to
bene it our parishioners and local community. The future of the
Cathedraldependsonfaith,outreach,andspiritualgrowth.
OurPrioritiesandPlan
In looking at our plans for renovation and preparing for a capital campaign, we determined three
priorities:
Our irst priority is accessibility. Our value as a church and special obligation as a Cathedral is to
accommodate to the best of our ability all who wish to gather here for worship, teaching, and
fellowship. Our plan is to upgrade our buildings to be family friendly and to meet or exceed ADA
requirements in order to allow disabled persons to access worship and gathering space, restrooms,
classrooms,andof ices.

With the inancial participation from every family, we will
reach and exceed our goal. This campaign is a planned,
methodicalapproachtoinvolvealloftheCathedralofSaint
James in living out the Christian principle of stewardship:
giving back to God a portion of the blessings that we have
received according to the ways in which we have been
blessed. We ask that members consider a sacri icial gift –
one that re lects the many blessings with which that God
hasprovidedus.Participationfromeveryoneiscrucial.That
is to say, we must each act according to God’s will in the
