Lana Tiernan October 30, 2014 Earth’s Layers Have you ever wondered about the different layers inside Earth? The crust, mantle, outer core, and the inner core are the four layers inside of our planet. Geologists study earthquakes to find out what the inside of Earth looks like. They use an instrument called a seismograph to hypothesize what it is like inside. The Earth’s outermost layer is the crust. The crust is made of solid rock, and it is the thinnest layer. It is also deeper under continents than oceans. It is the part of the Earth that we live on. The thickest layer is the mantle. The mantle is made of solid rock just like the crust. It lies below the crust and has scolding temperatures hotter than it would ever be on the part where we live on the crust. The liquid layer of Earth is the outer core. It is totally liquid, and it is probably made up of melted iron. It is split into two sections such as the inner core, and the outer core. The final layer of our huge planet is the inner core. It is the center of the Earth. It is shaped like a sphere. It is also made of totally solid material. Geologists study earthquakes to find out more about the crust, the mantle, the outer core and the inner core. The earth is very important to us because humans and animals live on the Earth. Without the earth, we wouldn’t be here. Thank goodness for the earth!
