Self Funded Laptop Variation - Information, Terms and Conditions
Some families have indicated an interest in purchasing their own Apple MacBook and accessories. For all
those families who are interested in this variation of the College’s Technology Access Plan, we provide
answers to frequently asked questions and the following information.
Option 1: Purchasing your own laptop and accessories package at the same time as the College’s Apple
MacBook order College order, delivered at the same time as other students. These are priced at the same
price being paid by the College, plus GST. Orders will be placed with our Apple reseller partner, NextByte:
What Hardware is included?
13.3” Apple MacBook with power adapter, LaCie Rikiki Hi-Speed USB 2.0 250GB back up drive, STM
Armour protective (hard shell) carry case. These will come labelled with the student’s name.
What Software is in this package?
OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, iLife, iWorks, MobileMe account (1 year subscription)
How will the machine be configured?
Machines are supplied with a College designed software image tailored specifically for student use at SJC.
The College ICT Support Department is designated as the primary administrator of the machine for purposes
of security, future updates and compatibility. It is currently configured for performing daily automatic data
back up, accessing the College wireless network which links to College servers and filtered internet, and
comes with a pre-configured basic file structure. This configuration will be enhanced and varied from time to
time.
What about Warranty?
The MacBooks have a 3 Year Apple Protection Plan, covering repairs related to design/manufacturing faults.
This plan also provides an after hours telephone software and hardware problem diagnosis support.
What about Insurance?
Insurance is not included and may be arranged by adding the laptop and accessories to a family’s existing
home and contents insurance, or specific insurance may be taken out with an insurance company. The
College is dealing with ProtecSure who specifically insure computers and their rates are reasonable as is the
excess. It is currently around $300 per machine for a 3 year period, however families should contact them
directly at www.protecsure.com.au to find out rates, terms and conditions.
What are the advantages of purchasing with the College bundle?
• Formatting of the machine specifically to have full access to all SJC facilities.
• On site (College) technology hardware assistance while under warranty.
• Free sending away and courier return of the machine, including a replacement loan machine for the
period of the warranty while undergoing repairs.
• Inclusion of a hard carry case and external hard-drive
• Considerably cheaper option than buying independently.
Not provided:
• Technical hardware support and loan machine beyond the 3 year warranty period must be paid for.
• Insurance cover must be paid for.
(Note: Software configuration and diagnosis support, College wireless, server, internet and Studywiz access
will continue for the duration of the student’s enrolment at the College.)
Total cost of package:
$1480 for purchase and ongoing access fee of $1.95 per week. Note: insurance is not included.

Option 2: Purchasing your own laptop and accessories independently through an external provider. This can
be delivered as negotiated with the retailer, and brought to the College ICT Department for configuring to the
network.
The following additional pricing has been compiled, accurate as of Friday 7 May 2010, and is provided to
families who are interested in purchasing an Apple MacBook from an external retailer.

It is important to note that families choosing to purchase their machines from an external provider are not
eligible for a replacement machine whilst repairs are being undertaken. Machines purchased from an
external provider are not covered under the College’s insurance plan.
Summary comment: Unless families can access exceptionally bargain priced externally sourced machines,
this option is not competitive.

Summary:
While costing is close and it is a matter of personal preference, the College ICT Team has put much thought
and planning into the package offered to parents and believes it to be the best all round option. The service
delivery is better, and costing is marginally cheaper through the College’s Standard Technology Access
Program, with the added advantage of cost being spread out so no large up-front payments are necessary.
