This was not an Easter Parade, but a Palm Sunday parade which involved exuberant children shouting praise to Jesus, their King. Worship is active. Worship is a verb. Everyone and especially children, worships better when involved actively. On Palm Sunday, the children waved branches, ran along with the parade, and shouted praises, even in the temple. Jesus looks for and loves the worship of children. See Matthew 21: 16 “Yes, have you never read, out of the mouths of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise for yourself?” How does your child worship? What opportunities make praise and worship meaningful for your family? Here are some thoughts from Matthew 21: God initiates worship. He reveals something about Himself and His people respond. Jesus showed Himself as the prophesied King, coming to save His people. Children respond in worship when they learn something new about what God has done or something takes on new meaning for them. On this Palm Sunday, listen for and learn from your child’s worship of our triumphant King Jesus. Happy Parenting! Today they are sold in bake shops and supermarket bakeries throughout the Easter season. Each bun has an icing cross on top to signify the crucifixion. In England, they were once sold by street vendors who advertised their wares with cries of “Hot Cross Buns! Hot Cross Buns!" Their street cries became a nursery rhyme....Hot cross buns! Hot cross buns! One a penny, two a penny, Hot cross buns! Saint Patrick and the Shamrock When Saint Patrick was preaching about the Holy Trinity, the people could not understand that there was one God in three Divine Persons: Father, Son, & Holy Spirit. Patrick looked down, and growing at his feet was a shamrock. He picked it and held it up, showing that there was one stem, but three leaves. The people understood the Holy Trinity at once. ORCS Purpose & Philosophy Our Redeemer Christian School, ORCS, is a non-discriminatory, non-denominational educational institution. This takes about 12 – 15 minutes. (Explain that the color white represents the purity in God’s eyes of those whose sins have been cleansed by Jesus…Read Isaiah 1: 18 and John 3: 1 – 3). Preheat oven to 300 degrees (this is important… don’t wait until you’re half done with the recipe). Fold in broken nuts. Drop by teaspoons onto a wax paper covered cookie sheet. (Explain that each mound represents the rocky tomb where Jesus’ body was laid…read Matthew 27: 57 - 60). Place pecans in the zipper baggie and let children beat them with the wooden spoon to break them into small pieces. (Explain that after Jesus was arrested, He was beaten by the Roman soldiers...read John 19: 1 – 30). Put the cookie sheet in the oven. Close the door. Let each child smell the vinegar. Put 1 tsp. vinegar Turn the oven OFF. into the mixing bowl. (Explain that when Jesus Give each child a piece of tape and seal the oven was thirsty on the cross, He was given vinegar to door. (Explain that Jesus’ tomb was sealed… read drink…read John 19: 28 – 30). Matthew 27: 65 – 66). Add egg whites to the vinegar. Eggs represent life. (Explain that Jesus gave His life to give us Life…read John 10: 10 – 11). On Easter morning, open the oven and give everyone a cookie. Notice the cracked surface and take a bite. The cookies are hollow! On the first Easter, Jesus’ followers were amazed to find the Tomb open and empty…Read Matthew 28: 1 – 9. Sprinkle a little salt into each child’s hand. Let them taste it and brush the rest into the bowl. (Explain that this represents the salty tears shed by Jesus’ followers and the bitterness of our own sin…read Luke 23: 27). So far, the ingredients are not very appetizing. Add 1 cup sugar. (Explain that the sweetest part of the story is that Jesus died because He loves us. He wants us to know and belong to Him…read Psalm 34: 8 and John 3: 16). 5 Easter Hare: of rabbits and resurrection in need. Despite its gentle ways, the hare, like Christ, has many enemies. Easter time is approaching. Stores are filled with baskets of garish plastic eggs, candy and little trinkets and rabbits with pronounced overbites grin from shop windows. Do you ever wonder what in the world any of this has to do with Christ? Actually, if you can clear away the commercialism of these baskets, you will find a rich symbolism that can enhance children’s appreciation of Easter. Like many Christian traditions, the Easter-bunny story has its roots in preChristian times, when a Germanic spring goddess had a hare as her messenger. The wild hare is a noble animal and has many characteristics that can symbolize Jesus, so the hare became a Christian symbol: The hare is gentle, never harming another. Its sensitive ears make it ever alert like Jesus, who heard the Spirit and listened to others The wild hare is remarkable for its selflessness. If one hare sees another being chased by a predator, the first hare will step in and run so the other hare can hide and rest, knowing it may sacrifice itself for the other hare. Why does the hare bring eggs? Of course, eggs symbolize springtime and new life, but why doesn’t a chicken or duck deliver? Rabbits do bring thoughts of fertility, but the Easter hare brings eggs because: The egg symbolizes the kernel of life, not just a sign of natural procreation. It signifies the very essence of life and the awareness of the eternal as well. The hare’s Christ like qualities make it a 6 better symbol for bringing this understanding of life. New life breaks through the hard shell, as Christ broke open the tomb and broke open the bonds of death. This new life shows us that there is newness within each of us, through Christ’s resurrection. Again, it is the hare teaching us Christ’s qualities, that brings us this symbolism. For very young children, associating Easter with the egg and the hare may be enough. For adults, part of the holiness of celebrating Easter is the time spent in preparation. As you fix Easter baskets for the children in your life, take time to reflect on all the messages before you. Here is a prayer for the quiet moments: Dear Jesus, As we wait in quiet vigil for Your glorious Resurrection, I prepare baskets filled with reminders of this joyous mystery. Please bring the beginnings of understanding to the children I love. Help me see Your life and love within each one. And, as my hands prepare the baskets, please help my heart prepare for the rebirth of Your love within Amen.
