About Thomas T. Barrington
Thomas Townsend Barrington, the author of
the present manuscript, was the son of Mark
Barrington and Bethia Townsend of Knox Co.,
OH. When Bethia passed away in 1854 and Mark
in 1861, young Tommie was sent to West
Branch, IA to live with his Uncle Thomas
Barrington, whose wife Elizabeth was
Bethia’s sister. The younger Thomas was welcomed into the family, which already included two children, George and Ruth. (Ruth was
destined to marry my great grandfather,
Abijah Judson Abbott, some years later.)
In 1910, Thomas T. and his wife Sarah (Webster) moved to Pasadena to join a growing group of friends and family members who
had once lived in West Branch. It was while living in Pasadena
that Thomas undertook the self-appointed job of family genealogist and ultimately produced this document on the descendants
of Thomas Townsend and his two wives, Elizabeth Speakman and
Ruth Elizabeth Mosher.
Caveat Emptor
Creating the Townsend – Townshend genealogy in the 1930s involved much letter-writing. Back then there was not the fear
of identity theft that is so prevalent today, but people then
were no different from those today in that inquiries often
went unanswered, and those that were answered often contained
erroneous information that had somehow gotten changed as it
i
was handed down from family member to family member. In addition, Thomas’s own recollections evidently failed him on occasion. For example, although he knew my great grandfather
Abijah J. Abbott well, he gave Abijah’s middle name as “Jones”
when in fact it was “Judson.”
The bottom line is that you should not treat the information
given in this genealogy as gospel; although the greater portion of it is accurate, there are nevertheless many errors.
Always check the information given here against other sources.
The manuscript was completed in 1934 and therefore does not
include any additional children who may have been born to a
given couple after that date.
The Index at the back of the manuscript gives the names and,
where they were known to Thomas, addresses of those listed in
the genealogy who were still living in 1934 when the manuscript was finished. Be aware that the names are not always in
correct alphabetical order. Thomas created the manuscript on a
typewriter and evidently was not keen on the idea of retyping
the pages when he discovered that he had missed a name.
As time permits, I plan to create a corrected version of the
genealogy and update it to include more recent members of the
clan. I’ll plainly mark the revision so readers do not confuse
it for the original.
Creating the Text File
The present manuscript was created using the following process. First, I scanned the pages of a photocopy of the original manuscript to create an Adobe Acrobat pdf containing the
digitized images of the pages. I then submitted the pdf file
ii
to the OmniPage 18 optical character-reader program, which
converted the text on the page images to text. As the photocopies included areas of dark shadow along the left edges, owing to the fact that the original bound manuscript would not
lie flat in the photocopier, OmniPage often failed to read the
characters in these areas correctly. I corrected those areas
by hand. Finally, I proofed the entire converted manuscript
against the original.
To preserve the look of the original manuscript, I chose a
monospaced type font (Courier New), set the font size to 12
points, and set the paper size to 8.5 inches by 8.5 inches.
This arrangement retained the original pagination for the most
part, there being only two areas (both in the first section)
where text from the top of a page had to be moved to the bottom of the previous one because of a lack of sufficient space.
The document that resulted was in Microsoft Word 2007 format.
The final step converted the Word document to pdf format. (I
have retained copies in both formats.)
The text is presented as in the original, with no corrections
as to fact, format, or punctuation.

PREFACE
TO THE TOWNSEND - TOWNSHEND GENEALOGY
The writers and readers of the Townsend circle letter will
remember that a few years ago the late H. H. Townsend, one of
the grandchildren of Thomas Townsend and son of Asa Townsend,
planned a family tree in the shape of a wheel with twelve
spokes, the vacant spaces between the spokes left for the names
of the twelve sons and daughters and children and grandchildren
of the above named Thomas Townsend. The writer of this preface
was so much pleased that he was not satisfied without continuing
the idea of making it a regular Genealogy with data of Births,
Marriages, and Deaths, and went to work on it to procure the information required to this end and about one year ago was put in
form of a Loose Leaf Book and mailed to thirty of the heads of
families for corrections, suggestions, and additions of what was
lacking. Aunt Letitia Townsend Folsom of Garden City, Kansas,
the only one living of the thirteen children (one dying in infancy) could not name her father's grandfather and his two
brothers that came from England about the time William Penn settled Pennsylvania, but when the Genealogy got to Martha Forman,
Ames, Iowa, she informed the writer that she had information
from different sources of the Townsend Generation as far back as
Richard Townsend I of London, England, in the sixteenth century.
Therefore, this, together with what the writer found in the Genealogy room of the Los Angeles, Calif. Public Library, is recorded herein after as follows.

PART I
"The Townsend or Townshend family of England and America
are of mixed Saxon and Norman origin and of great antiquity in
the County Norfolk, England.
Walter Atte Townshende, son of Sir Lodovic de Townshende,
a Norman nobleman, whom Collins in his Peerage of England put
at the head of this family, flourished after the Conquest.
This Lodovic it seems married Elizabeth de Hauteville, sole
heiress of the manors of Raynham, daughter of Sir Thomas de
Hauteville. They were of Norman extraction and settling in the
County of Norfolk became possessed of considerable property,
said to have been granted them by William, the Conqueror, a
portion of which by this marriage came to the Townsend family." (From “The History, Genealogy, and Alliances of the England and American House of Townsend," by Margaret Townsend)
Early Members of the Family
Richard Townsend I, a staunch Quaker, imprisoned and persecuted for his conscientious scruples, had children as follows: Richard, John, William, and Elizabeth. (From the parish
register of Pangbourne church records.)
2
A - Richard Townsend II, B 11-30-1645 in Cirencester in
Gloucestershire. M at Newbury, Burkshire, 5-25-1677. He joined
the Society of Friends, Third Month, 1672, and settled in London, Third Month, 1676. He died at home of his nephew, Joseph
Townsend in East Bradford, Chester County, Pennsylvania. This
Richard Townsend embarked September 1, 1682, from the Downs
off Deal in England on board the ship “Welcome" of 300 tons,
Capt. Robert Greenway, Commander, and arrived at New Castle on
the Delaware, October 24, 1682. Part of the testimony of Richard Townsend, showing the hand of God to him and others from
the first settlement of Pennsylvania to this date, about 1727,
is as follows:
"Whereas King Charles II in the year 1681 was
pleased to grant this Province to William Penn and his
heirs forever, which Act seemed to be an act of Providence to many religious good people, and the Proprietor,
William Penn, being one of the people called Quakers, and
in good esteem among them and others, many were inclined
to embark with him for the settlement of this place. To
this end in the year 1682 several ships being provided, I
found a concern in my mind to embark with them with my
wife and child; and about the end of the sixth month,
having settled my affairs in London where I dwelt, I went
on board the ship "Welcome," Robert Greenway, commander,
in company with my worthy friend, William Penn, whose
conversation was very advantageous to our Company. His
singular care was manifested in contributing to the necessities of many who were sick of the
3
Small Pox then on board, out of which about 30 died. After a prosperous passage of about two months, having had
in that time many good meetings on board, we arrived
here. At arrival we found it a Wilderness, the chief inhabitants were Indians and a few Swedes who received us
in a friendly manner, and though there was a great number
of us, the hand of Providence was seen in a particular
manner, in that provisions were found for us by the
Swedes and Indians at very reasonable prices as well as
brought from divers other parts that were inhabited before. Our first concern was to keep up and maintain our
religious worship and in order thereunto we had several
meetings in the houses of the inhabitants, and one boarded meeting house was set up where the city was to be near
Delaware, and as we had nothing but love and goodwill in
our hearts one to another, we had very comfortable meetings from time to time, and after our meetings were over,
we assisted each other in building little houses for our
shelter." (From "The History, Genealogy and Alliances of
the England and American House of Townsend"}.
"In 1683, Richard Townsend and others erected a corn mill
on the site of the Chester Mills on Chester Creek above Upland. He was one of a company formed in England of which Wm.
Penn was a member in 1682. The mill was erected under the care
of Caleb Pusey and the materials brought from England."
"In 1683, Richard Townsend erected a grist mill on what
is now Churchlane, Germantown, for which he brought the machinery and most of the woodwork from England." (From the History of Bucks County, Pa., by W.W.H. Davis, pages 49-50).
4
"About 1½ miles northeast of Chester on the left bank of
Chester Creek and a short distance from the mill of Richard
Flowerdes, there still exists a cottage built principally of
brick by Richard Townsend for the accommodation of his family
while he was erecting the first mill in the province." (From
Barber's History of Pennsylvania, page 303).
Richard II was married at Newbury, Burkshire, 5-25-1677,
to Ann, daughter of Richard Hutchens. She died 3-13-1733. To
this union were born six children:
Al - Joseph, B 12-2-1678. Died in infancy.

Chester, and finally settled near West Chester, Pennsylvania
in 1725, where he owned also at East Bradford several hundred
acres of land, and at whose house his Uncle Richard died, D 49-1766. To this union were born eight children:

Direct Ancestors of Thomas Townsend (1781-1849)
STEPHEN TOWNSEND. While we do not know the birthdate of
Stephen Townsend, nor can we be sure as to his parentage, both
tradition and historical references point to his relationship
with Richard Townsend, the celebrated Friends minister who
came over on the "Welcome". The first established fact that we
have about Stephen is that he was in Solebury Township, Bucks
Co., Pa. in 1735.
"Richard Townsend, a celebrated minister among Friends of
London, a "Welcome" passenger and a carpenter by trade
settled near Chester in 1682. . . . He removed first to
Germantown and then to near Abington, whence his grandson
Stephen came to Solebury about 1735. He was a carpenter
and a miller. . . . One end of the old Townsend house,
probably the oldest in the township, was built in 1756 by
Stephen Townsend, and the other end some 30 to 40 years
later. The windows had broad sash and small folding shutters, the fireplace was wide and capacious and the outside door was garnished with a wooden latch . . . . It
was on this farm that the celebrated Townsend apple is
said to have originated. Tradition says this apple took
its name from Richard Townsend, who, hearing of a wonder7
ful apple tree got the Indians to take him to it which he
found standing in a large clearing near Lumberville. He
bought the clearing, but the Indians reserved the free
use of apples to all who wished them. Samuel Preston said
that in his time Stephen Townsend owned the original tree
from which he, Preston, cut grafts in 1766." (From the
History of Bucks Co., Pennsylvania, by W.W.H. Davis, page
303.)
From the History of Chester and Delaware Counties by G.
Cope we find in Vol. I under the caption "The Townsend Family"
a sketch of Richard Townsend and his genealogy, and on page 27
the following: "James Townshend, son of Rich'd and Ann was
Born on board ye Ship Called ye Welcome in Delaware River ye
2d of ye 9 mo. 1682, M Elizabeth Tomlinson in 1703 and was
perhaps the father of Stephen Townsend who settled in Bucks
Co., Pa. in 1737."
There was also a Stephen, oldest son of John and Elizabeth Townsend (see page 5), of Independence Square, but we are
unable to prove that he is the Stephen of Solebury Township.
However, this Stephen was the nephew of Richard II.
From the Abington Monthly Meeting minutes 1737, 3d month
30, Stephen Townsend received a certificate to Buckingham
Monthly Meeting for himself and family. (The names are not
enumerated, nor is there an earlier reference to his marriage
or arrival in the meeting.)
The names of his children are found in an abstract from
Stephen Townsend's will, found in the Cope papers:

PART II
THOMAS TOWNSEND (1781 - 1859)
Thomas Townsend, whose descendants are to be listed in
this record, was the youngest child of William and Elizabeth
Watson Townsend. He was born April 5, 1781, in Bucks Co. Pa.
We have no definite knowledge of his mother other than that
she was of Irish descent.
Thomas was 13 years of age when his parents moved with
their family from Bucks Co., near West Grove, to Chester Co.
Here they were received into the New Garden Monthly Meeting in
1794. He was apprenticed to learn the shoemakers trade when he
was 16 or 17 years of age. He long continued this trade, making shoes for his own large family of children.
Thomas received a certificate of removal from New Garden
Monthly Meeting, a single man, to Baltimore, 11-7-1805, which
perhaps explains a later reference to him as a "Friend from
Maryland".
One day when he was 28 years of age, he was busily plying
his trade along with many other workers, when some acquaintances came by on their way to the wilderness of Ohio and invited Thomas to join them. He replied that he would go if they
would give him a day in which to get ready. He closed up his
affairs and the next day, on horseback, he followed their wagons. They stopped in Knox Co., Ohio, which was truly a "howling wilderness" and very sparsely settled.
Here Thomas took up a large military claim on which he
lived the remainder of his life. He never returned to Pennsylvania and corresponded but little with the result that his
children knew little of his ancestors.
The following reference to the Patent from the President
of the United States gives the location of his property:
13
President of the United States to Thomas Townsend
Patent
Dated Feb. 20, 1812
The North West Quarter of Section 21, Township 8, Range 14.
(Middlebury Twp. Knox Co. Ohio) According to our Tax Map, this
would be about 165 Acres. Purchase price was not mentioned.
Recorded in Deed Volume B, Page 494.
The History of Knox Co., Ohio, by Norton gives an account
of the first election by townships. On page 44 we find: "At
the October election the first regular vote was taken for
state and county officers - the terms of those elected in
April having been, in Clerk Lofland's phrase, only "pro
pempore". The following poll book of one of the most populous
townships shows who were voted for October 11, 1808."
Thomas Townsend's name was 23d, and last in the list of
voters. Thomas served on the Grand Jury in September 1809.
On September 3, 1819, Thomas Townsend married Ruth Mosher
who was born 9-12-1796. She was the daughter of Asa and
Bethiah Mosher. They were residents of the adjoining county of
Morrow, and lived near Mt. Gilead. To this union were born
nine children.
Thomas Townsend was an industrious, hard working man, and
a splendid manager.
In the Knox Co. Ohio, History by A. B. Williams on page
355, is found the following: Middlebury Township. "Thomas
Townsend located 1½ miles north of Fredericktown in 1808. He
was a true Friend and kept an "underground railroad" station
in which he used to harbor and feed as high as 2O fugitive
slaves at one time, and when they were sufficiently rested
would set their face toward the north star and bid them depart
in peace and "God be with you". He died March 13, 1859, aged
78 years. - - Mrs. Martha L. Forman.
