HOW I USE THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES
AT CENTER CLUB
I have been coming to Center Club since October, 2015. and I
come here four days a week.
During my time here, I spend most of it in the education room.
Here, I use the computers, reference books, and study guides, to
study for the GRE’s and Miller’s Analogies Test.

I have been out of school for over thirty-six years. However, I have
my Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology, Sociology and African and
Afro-American Studies. I am working diligently, because I want to
matriculate a Master’s Degree program in Psychology.
Peer Tutoring .......... 6
To this end, I am studying on my own and receive math tutoring
from another Club member, Scott. This is a great deal of work. I
spend from five to seven hours a day in this room, but there is so
much to do, that the time flies by so quickly. Whew!

SUPER BOWL PARADE
What a game. Talk about a comeback.
Great win! We helped TB12 and the
Patriots celebrate their 5th Super Bowl
win at the parade. The parade route
went right by the clubhouse. Members
and staff braced the cold temperatures
to cheer on our favorite football team.

THE PERSON AT THE CENTER OF PERSONCENTERED RECOVERY PLANNING
We are now venturing into the session: “The Person at the
Center of Person-Centered Recovery Planning (PCRP)” this
is the fourth installment of the eleven sessions of the 2016
Recovery Workforce Summit presented by the PRA and
PRF, in partnership with MassPRA. This presentation was
hosted by Amanda Saake, Janis Tondora, and Maria Restropo-Toro.
In the process of PCRP, the person is partner in all planning activities/meetings. There is always advance notice
given, and the person has reasonable control over logistics
(e.g., time, invitees etc).
The person is offered a written copy of education preparation.
Key Practices:
Recognize the range of Contributor’s to planning process
e.g., peers, natural supporters. Understand/Support Rights
such as Self-Determination, PADS, and WRAP. What
makes the most sense for individuals and families we serve.

Your fitness Goal:
Weight Loss

CVS Soft Skills Training
Four members of Center Club and seven members from other agencies have come together on Wednesdays and Thursdays over the month of February to learn about soft skills,
which are work-related social skills. During March, we’re going to be training in CVS
stores.
We did a lot of exercises for teamwork. We did a spaghetti-and-marshmallow structure
building exercise. We also did a lot of tossing a bean bag and then a lot of check in exercises, where you say your name and how you are doing today or what you think about
something. Working as a team is important, it’s sort of a reminder that you’re not just
there by yourself. Individually you do your jobs, but everyone comes together as a team.
We learned about self-talk. It’s personal problem-solving for difficult situations. You can
take a deep breath and count to ten. Self-talk is, instead of blowing up in a situation that
arises, you basically talk yourself into having a better attitude for a better outcome.
We talked about coming into work smiling and having a nice appearance. It’s important
to have a customer service attitude as well.
Your plan: First, determine how much
weight you wish to
lose—then do a little
math. The Academy
of Nutrition and Dietetics recommends
slow weight loss for
lasting results—
usually 1/2 pound to
one pound per week.
Completing 10,000
steps each day typically burns about
2000 to 3500 extra
calories each week.
One pound of body
fat equals 3500 calories, so depending on
your weight and
workout intensity,
you could lose about
one pound per week
simply by completing
10,000 steps each
day.
There were also a lot of acting activities. We basically acted out different scenarios that
might occur in your work day, basically showing negative and positive scenarios. They
help you problem-solve random situations. It could be negative or positive, or it could be
a customer asking you directions for a certain product.

PEER TUTORING
I enjoy tutoring in the Center
Club Baer Education room because I feel I have a lot to offer to
members looking for help in English/writing, history and baking.
Coming down here after I finish
my day at center House gives me
an opportunity to hang out in
case someone comes looking for
help. I have a degree in history,
and originally majored in English
writing but discovered I was
spending more time taking history classes than English. I’m also a
proofreader and editor, offering
those skills to members who have
written papers for class or working on the actual writing of the
paper itself. Baking is a passion
and I love to share what I make,
meaning I can help members
bake something and then take
something for themselves to enjoy
at home.

Center Club at the State House
A group of Center Club members and staff visited the State
House on Monday, February 27, to be a part of Homeless Legislative Action Day. Members who have experienced homeless, are
presently homeless, fear homelessness, or are allies to those in
homeless situations gave eloquent testimonies before three state
legislators.
Ruth Hammonds spoke about her experience of homelessness.
She gave heartfelt and passionate testimony about how challenging it can be to live in a state of flux while not having a home.
Eddie Fuentes and Eric Colin-Smith also shared their stories,
and they touched upon some of the root causes of homelessness.

COUNTING TIME
MY LIFE
My real father was a veteran
from World War II. He had
been raised on a
“Sharecropping estate in a
Mississippi county. My
mother married my father
out of a passionate romance
not an arranged marriage.
There was some talk of my
mother getting depressed
and changing on him but
after children and motherhood down shed the tack.
Now, a missionary my
mother raised an evangelist
son, Gary Clemons.-me-.
I am of Blackfoot and Negro. Who can make heated
wet dreams as my relatives
at Boston’s Mount Senai
Church coached me to discover. After 20 years of experimenting when I send
them. In a “wet dream the
person feels new and the
individual’s prejudges goes
away. Any the person wants
to relate to a different
“sphere” making La Costa,
Nostra… The Cause is ours.
Being a sort of paranoid
character my soul keeps the
Lord’s Prayer following in
my mind. But pulling allnighters I often create the
miracle, but I haven’t figured out marketing it.
Ghosts, gray as dust,
gather
into corners darkening
down
as a serenely setting sun
awakes in me a sense of
a hidden truth in the dying light
telling me there is no
trivial time.
Just this light in the
dark waiting
for all who are ready to
see.

The following diagram below, is a description of how Needs can be viewed
Specific
Achievable
Measurable
Time
Realistic
This is a way to also evaluate your objectives. Are they smart?
As one can see from the diagram, these points can be observed and linked in a system that is
“inclusive” and what is necessary for accomplishing what the session hosts deem to be ”Personcentered Planning Skills , Promotion of Self-Efficacy and Self-Sufficiency--- These principles, transform into that is deemed to include ”Community Integration; Documentation; Goal setting; Health
and Wellness; Peers; Person-centered Planning skills…”Therefrom, the person in Centered Recovery
Planning can incorporate the following:
Simple or Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Realistic/Relevant
Time-Framed
These convey a message of hope that a person can thrive on. Such is targeted towards a barrier.
*Objectives should go beyond service participation (Organization-involvement).
Interventions/Services: Who will assist person meeting objectives?
-This should be specific to objective.
-Specific to stage of change/recovery
-Billable services must describe medical necessity
-Who will provide services?
-What services will be provided?
-When will services be provided?
-Action steps by person in recovery
-Cultural inclusion of their Values in person-centered planning
*Examples of Service Interventions/Examples of Self-Directed and Natural Support Actions, are
tantamount to success.
Work with Providers by “Inclusion” will eventually result in less dependency on them. And, this, less
dependence on the System of Services themselves.

What’s Happening in the Food Services & Social Activities Unit?
The Unit is in the planning process for Spring and Summer Trips. We
will be meeting on March 14, 2017 at 10:00am and March 30, 2017
at 3:30pm. Please come and join us and bring suggestions for trips
that the Club should go on this year!
The Kiosko/Snack Bar continues to be a popular service in the Unit.
Members and staff can purchase coffee and snacks at reasonable
prices. We are currently looking for a member who may be interested in volunteering for afternoon shifts at the snack bar. See a Food
Service Staff member if you are interested.
The club will be open a few additional Saturdays for the next few
months. Check the monthly calendar for the dates.
The club is currently planning for an upcoming Boston Trivia Bee. In
preparation, we need to come up with trivia questions that are related to Boston. If you would like to submit trivia questions for the
Trivia Bee, please see Caroline!
A reminder that every month, the unit has a MENU PLANNING meeting. We meet as a unit the last Tuesday of every month at 10:00am.
Come and join us if you would like to participate and have a say in
what meals we serve throughout the month. New ideas always welcome!!
Have an upcoming birthday? In addition to sending out cards during
the month of your birthday, the club also offers members 1 free
lunch during the month of their birthday. See any staff member during your birthday month to receive your free lunch ticket.

(Continued From Page 7) Eric added some interesting facts that he’s read in The Boston Globe
and The New York Times about what President Trump intends to do (or not do) for those at
risk of homelessness during his tenure. Jeff Nolan shared his concerns about the risk of homelessness for live-in caretakers when their clients pass away.
Bob Sollenberger, Nicole Johnson, Jason Potter, Christine McGrory, Jean Goldner, Gilbert
Taylor, Scott McConnell, Michael Whelan, Robin Chase, Scott Johnson, and Rina Wolok also
shared testimonies and opinions.
Center Club members asked Representative Russell Holmes, Representative Jeffrey Sánchez,
and Senator Sonia Chang-Díaz to vote in favor of nine pieces of legislation that are being debated by the Massachusetts Congress this session. These bills would provide more funding for
housing vouchers, free state IDs for people in homeless situations, safer sleeping conditions for
families, assistance with rental and mortgage back payments, and a Homeless Bill of Rights
that would help prevent various forms of discrimination against and criminalization of people
in homeless situations.
Individuals from Center Club also made bigger-picture requests that would address some of the
root causes of homelessness. For example, members of our group asked the legislators to support a $15 minimum wage as well as the construction of more truly affordable housing.
The consensus among our group was that it was a productive, uplifting, and empowering experience, and we would like to do it again soon!
