Puma News “Everything Legacy” March 2015 Volume 1, Issue 7 Message from Ms. Fairweather Be conscious, be humble, be respectful, be consistent, be silent, be thankful and just be nice. These seven practices will help you become successful in anything you do in the future. They will also help you develop better self-esteem, and help you become an overall better person. However, these are not easy processes and it will require you to be honest with yourself. If you are up for the challenge, please keep reading. Be Conscious: This means to be aware of your surroundings, other people’s perspective, and your own emotions and thoughts. If you are mindful of these three matters, you will be able to resolve conflicts with ease. Be Humble: This means that while you are aware and confident about your strengths, you are also honest and aware about your weaknesses. You recognize where you need to improve and you are not afraid to ask questions or ask for help. Be Respectful: This means that you respect others and, more importantly, you respect yourself. Even when you feel disrespected by someone, you still show respect and move on, knowing that you don’t have to let anyone take away your peace. When you show respect to others it shows how much respect you have for yourself. Be Consistent: This means that no matter what troubles and challenges cross your path, you will always remain true to yourself. You will be stable in your thoughts, emotions and practices. Be Silent: This means that you listen more than you speak. You will use your eyes, more than your tongue and use actions more than your words. Be Thankful: A lot of times we forget to appreciate what we have. Because of the type of world we live in, it is easy to want more and more. Just take a breath and realize that you truly have more than you will ever need to become the person you want to become. Just Be Nice: In the end, it just helps to be nice. Be nice to yourself. Be gentle with yourself. You are doing the best you can. Realize that you are truly a phenomenal person. As you continue on the path and journey of your life, I can only hope these seven practices help you and stay with you. Because of they do, you will have a healthy mind, body and spirit. ”Only surround yourself with people who will lift you higher.” – Oprah Winfrey EDITORIAL STAFF Cedric Brown Jalen Brown Diamond Burnette Viergla Cesar Zarkeria Eliassaint Darrin Harris Demetris Harris Jaden Jennings (Editor) Stephanie Lundeen Jaleel Powell Jaydon Sykes-Griffin Ayanna Thomas Inside this issue: HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!!! Another word for synergy is teamwork. “Synergy is achieved when two or more people work together to create a better solution than either could alone. It’s not your way or my way but a better way, a higher way” (Covey, p. 182). When we work as a team, we can achieve more and be more successful. By Jaden Jennings The 7th and 8th Grade Pumas embarked on a financial literacy journey called S.T.E.A.M. S.T.E.A.M. is the acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. The program is sponsored by MOSI. In the program, students were introduced to a few of the rovers that NASA sends to Mars. The program was a four-day course and during the course, we discussed budgeting, financial planning, income and careers. The instructors, Mr. Silas Potter and Ms. Urmila Wadnerkar, assigned us the task of coming up with a mission to complete in space. Using a budget of $20,000, each group had to choose a form of a satellite or a rover and build it. We then had to present our mission as a commercial, a newspaper ad or a billboard. If our presentations were successful, we earned raises. This program taught us the importance of financial literacy through a hands-on project that required us to use a budget to create a project and work as a team. STEM By Daunte Harris We are in the second session of the STEM /KidsCode Program. During this semester, we will focus on designing and building websites. Prior to building the website, we had to identify a social issue that we would include in the website. Some of the social issues we will cover include: air pollution, single moms, cyber bullying, racism, discrimination and bullying. In the website design, we have to include social issues, stakeholders, and solutions. In addition, we will learn how to code, style and create websites. Once we have finished the websites, you may access them on any computer, cell phone, etc. Stay tuned for more information regarding the STEM program. A Blast Through History By Darrin Harris On Thursday, March 26, we presented our Black History Play. Ms. Brown sang the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice and Sing”, Mr. Rush played “We Shall Overcome” on the saxophone and Mrs. Treadwell sang a solo. Mrs. Fryer was the mistress of ceremony and the director, Mrs. Askew, provided the background about how she wrote this play for our school. The play was about a lazy boy named Sam (Jaydon) who did not want to do research for a school assignment. Upon falling asleep, he was visited by many historical figures to include Dr. King, Malcolm X, Frederick Douglass, and many more. Each person told what he or she had invented and patented. Through his dream, the lazy boy got knowledge and help on his homework. The play ended with Mrs. Askew’s daughter miming to the song “Glory”. The performers in the play were Jaydon Sykes-Griffin, Alicia Hancock, Daunte Harris, Mezarson Cesar, Peter McClarin, Darrin Harris, Josiah Capers, Widelert Darmisa, Jaleel Powell, Chareisa Burnette, Malik Jones, Dayjinae Dailey, Ahmad Mobley, Nathaniel Rollins, and Daniel Lindsey. Everyone was impressed with the play and to see an amazing blast through history.
