 Don’t use chairs or tables as ladders
Back Safety
Avoid picking up heavy loads below knees & above
shoulders.
 Remember; if a load looks too heavy … it probably is
too heavy – get help.

Proper lifting technique:



Stand close to load - Squat & lift with legs
Bend at knees – not at the waist
Keep back straight & keep chin up during lift
Back Safety
•
Use available equipment for heavier loads
• Dollies
• Hand-trucks
Prohibited items include;
 Illegal knives (blades >5½ in.)
 Firearms (incl. licensed-to-carry)
Electrical Safety

 Employees must be
 Informed about hazardous materials with which
they work, and
 Trained regarding proper use.
Labeling – haz-mats must be labeled with their Identity & Hazards.
Identity = chemical or common name.
Hazard Labels – color coded & rated.
Red = Fire
Blue = Health
Yellow = Reactivity or Instability
White = Specific hazard
(i.e. COR, ACID, etc.)
Ratings - 0 to 4
0 = no hazard
1 = slight
2 = moderate
3 = serious
4 = extreme hazard
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS)



Required for each hazardous product
Must be in readily accessible location
Employees can consult the MSDS to determine
information such as:
 Fire hazards (flammability)
 Health hazards
 PPE (personal protective equipment)
Hazardous materials must be properly stored
 In flammable cabinets or
 type-specific cabinets (i.e. acids, corrosives, etc.)
Always use proper PPE for the task:



 May contain HIB, HIV, or other blood-borne pathogens

Avoid exposure
 Use PPE (gloves, eye protection, etc.)

Avoid contact with
 Infectious materials (blood/body fluids)
 Sharps (i.e. needles)

If exposed wash thoroughly with soap & water
 Report the exposure – Supervisor/Human Resources/Safety

Don’t clean blood/body fluids
 Call Housekeeping – they have the products and training necessary




Fire extinguishers
Emergency lighting
Exit signs
It’s important to remember that:
 Fire Alarms are “local” only
 Alarms are not monitored by Police or 3rd party
 Alarms are not automatically transmitted to 911
Alarms must be reported – to 911 – then to 5555
 If a fire alarm is activated

 All personnel must evacuate the building immediately
▪ Evacuation is mandatory – per UMHB Policy and Fire Marshal
▪ For all alarms - actual & false alarms
 Report to the designated Emergency Assembly Point
 Do not return to building until authorized by “authorities”
It’s important to:
 Maintain 18” clearance around fire sprinkler heads
 Know locations in your work area of;
 Fire extinguishers
 Fire alarm pull stations
▪ Located at or near each exit
 Emergency exits
▪ primary & secondary
 Emergency Assembly Points
▪ Safety Manual Sect. 6.0 Emergency Prep. Appendix
 Areas of Safe Refuge are
▪ Enclosed stairwells that provide a
▪ 2 hour fire protection barrier.

The State of Texas requires that building occupants be
notified of the presence of asbestos in the workplace.
 Asbestos is – a mineral used 1900s to 1970s as insulation
and fire retardant material.
 Asbestos surveys have been conducted in all UMHB
buildings to identify known and suspect Asbestos
Containing Materials (ACM).
 Asbestos is not a health hazard if in good condition and
“non-friable”.
 Asbestos is a health hazard if disturbed or becomes
“friable” (fibers released).
 If inhaled or ingested can cause asbestosis, lung cancer,
mesothelioma, etc.
Known or Suspect ACM locations
