The Seahorse (2016-2017 -3)

The Seahorse (2016-2017 -3)
Colorado Invitational: Fairview finished second among the 52 teams
competing. The score of the top five teams was: Fossil Ridge (389.5), Fairview
(342), Arapahoe (258), Valor Christian (228) and Lewis Palmer (185.5). Fairview
was led by championship finalists: Brittney Beetcher, Mikayla Seigal, MyaDrost-Parra, Alex Schwier, Kim Lanaghen, Una Forsythe, Riley Tapley, and
Isabel Rich. Several teams , such as Fossil Ridge, and Regis did not use technical
suits. The meet was scored to 20 places which plays to our advantage due to our
team depth. At 5A State in February, only 16 places will make finals and score.
Brittney Beetcher won Swimmer of the Meet and Hoyt Brawner Awards. The
Hoyt Brawner Award is given to the top Colorado high school senior swimmer
based upon academics, community service and athletic accomplishment. Twelve
senior athletes were nominated for the Hoyt Brawner. Past Fairview winners of
the award include Ben Howard and Kevin Roche.
Our 200 medley relay finished 3rd in 1:48.28. The relay splits were Riley Tapley
(26.87), Alex Schwier (30.76), Kim Lanaghen (26.33) and Kira Reznicek
(24.32).
Brittney Beetcher (1:51.17) won the 200 free in a Consideration All American
time. She was joined in the championship final by Mikayla Seigal (1:54.57-5th),
who swam a time that ranks 8th on the Fairview All Time Performers list. In total,
our athletes recorded 14 performances that register on the All Time list (see
below). Our seniors have established a team season goal to have 17 new positions
on the All Time List. The complete list may be found on our swim team website
and will be updated soon.
The 200IM was a strong event for Fairview with our athletes finishing two up
(championship finals) and two down (consolation finals): Mya Drost-Parra
(2:11.64-8th), Alex Schwier (2:14.93-10th), Morgan Simon (2:15.15-15th) and
Isabel Rich (2:15.31-16th). Special thanks to Fairview parent Amy Drost who
detected a computer glitch in the scoring of the IM that was missed by 10 meet
officials and by 50+ coaches, and that resulted in four additional team points for
Fairview.
Our team scored 53 points in the 100 butterfly, our best event. Our finalists were
Kim Lanaghen (57.94-3rd), Una Forsythe (58.52-8th) Mikayla Seigal (58.95-9th)
and Kaia Reznicek (1:00.98-17th). Our lone finalist in the 100 free was Cailen
Chinn (54.07-14th).
Brittney Beetcher won the 500 free by over 7 seconds (4:57.20) in an Automatic
All American time. Scoring for our team in the consolation final were Morgan
Simon, who moved up 4 spots from prelims to finish 12th (5:13.71) and Robin
Cruz-Abrams , who moved up 5 spots to finish 13th (5:14.62) in a significant
personal best.
The Fairview 200 free relay (1:38.79) placed 3rd and was swum by Mikayla
Seigal (24.81), Una Forsythe (24.98), Kaia Reznicek (24.59) and Brittney
Beetcher (24.41) . The Consideration All American time standard in this event is
1:37.39.
In the 100 backstroke event Riley Tapley had an exceptional swim in the finals
touching in 56.55 seconds for second place, a three position improvement from
prelims, and a personal best. Riley’s splits were very level: 28.04 and 28.51. Form
resistance has a quadratic relationship to a swimmer’s speed: when the swimmer’s
speed doubles, the form resistance increases by 4x. Wave resistance has a cubic
relationship to a swimmer’s speed: when the swimmer’s speed doubles, the wave
resistance increases by 8x! Therefore, physics dictates the importance of
swimming level pace. Congratulations Riley on a well-paced 100 backstroke! Also
placing in the 100 back was Mya Drost Parra (1:00.44-16th) who moved up three
spots from prelims.
Freshman Isabel Rich led our breaststrokers with a personal best time of 1:07.43
good for 8th place in the meet and 5th spot on our team All Time List. Also placing
were Alex Schwier (1:10.92-18th) and Natalie Brent (1:10.95-19th)
Capping the meet was our 6h place finish in the 400 free relay (3:38.91) which was
swum by Brittney Beetcher (55.10) Cailen Chinn (54.71), Una Forsythe (55.61)
and Mikayla Seigal (53.49). Complete results are posted on the team website.
High Character Athlete: In planning for the meet, six Fairview swimmers had a
good chance to final (place top 20) in the 100 butterfly, but meet rules only allow
four athletes per team to swim in finals. Mya Drost-Parra was willing to switch
out of the butterfly, a very strong event for her, and move to the 200IM, making
room for another Fairview athlete to swim finals in the fly and scoring more points
for the team.
OLY Invitational
Fairview won the 6th annual OLY Invite, a team goal. The score of the top three
teams: Fairview 402, Silver Creek 217, and Rangeview 208. Fairview was led by
event winners Rya Muller (301.90-11 dives), Kate Martin (28.31- 50 free), Kira
Patton (1:08.80-100 fly), Sarah Tang (1:09.20-100 back), and Kate Jordan
(1:14.52-100 breast). Fairview finished first in two relays. The 200 medley
(2:07.31) was swum by Bridget Duncan (34.49), Kate Jordan (35.52), Kira
Patton (29.06) and Kate Martin (28.24); and the 400 free relay (4:19.45) was
comprised of Emily Kuhn (1:05.73), Courtney Clemmer (1:03.02), Sarah Tang
(1:04.8) and Emma O’Leary (1:05.9) . Twenty four personal best times were
achieved, which are detailed in the chart below. Congratulations swimmers for
carrying on the Fairview tradition of strong swimming at OLY, Fairview has won
the meet each of the last five years. Complete results are posted on the team
website
Our team depth was outstanding this year as these swimmers were also Top 12
finalists in individual swims:
• 200 free – Courtney Clemmer (2nd– 2:14.57), Sarah Tang (5th-2:21.79),
and Emma O’Leary (11th-2:27.16)
• 200 IM – Grace Butler (2nd-2:33.61), Kira X. Patton (3rd-2:41.12), and
Kate Jordan (10th-2:51.14)
• 50 free – Emily Dalgleish (3rd-28.74), and Elsa Russell (7th-29.94)
• 100 fly – Grace Butler (2nd-1:09.77), Lillian Berets (4th-1:13.57), and
Bridget Duncan (5th-1:16.33)
• 100 free – Emily Dalgleish (2nd-1:04.99), Emily Kuhn (1:05.75), Elsa
Russell (6th-1:08.14), and Lexi Beggen (7th-1:08.96)
• 500 free – Courtney Clemmer (3rd-6:17.65)
• 100 back – Emily Kuhn (5th-1:14.78), Bridget Duncan (7th- 1:14.86) and
Anna Stone (8th-1:15.16)
• 100 breast – Emma Thomas (2nd-1:20.15), Grace Cheval (5th-1:25.77) and
Katia Beggen (8th-1:27.59)
High Character Athlete: Lillian Berets qualified for finals in 100 fly and 100
free which are consecutive events. Given the short recovery time, Lillian chose to
give up her spot in the finals of the 100 free to another Fairview athlete, who was
well rested and won the consolation final. Thank you Lillian for thinking first of
your teammates and your team.
That can’t be right! There were many instances during the meet when the touch
pads were misfiring. In the prelims of the 100 breaststroke, Kate Jordan touched
the wall and saw a 1:13 time for her 100 breaststroke. She assumed this was
another mistake because her previous personal best time was 1:19.74.Actually the
score board was incorrect and her official time was 1:12.87!! a gigantic time drop
of 6.8 seconds.
Diving Knights: on Friday our divers got the team off to a strong start with Rya
Muller (301.90) and Gracen Wiggins (294.65) taking 1-2.
Colorado Invite Cuts: The following three athletes were able to achieve Colorado
Invite cuts at OLY meet: Rya Muller (diving), Gracen Wiggins (diving) and
Kate Jordan (100 breaststroke).
Dual Meet:
Fossil Ridge 198 Fairview 111 It was not a good omen that one of our two buses
to Fort Collins took the wrong route and arrived 30 minutes late. The Fossil Ridge
athletes won all 12 events. Fairview was led in the water by second place finishers
Robin Cruz- Abrams (200 free-2:03.57), Amelie Lessing (100 fly-59.35), Alex
Schwier (500 free-5:26.03) and Riley Tapley (100 back-1:00.48).The Diving
Knights had a sterling performance with five personal best performances (see list
below). Scoring well in only their second dive competition were Madie Ausley
(3rd-174) and Rya Muller (4th- 173.25). Also nearing the Colorado Invite 6 dive
standard (180) were Sammy Denninger (171.35-5th) and Gracen Wiggins
(166.40-6th). A special thanks to volunteer dive coach Carlos Cruz-Abrams who
encouraged and tutored our six divers.
