Information from, Night
Sky, by Giles Sparrow:
Most asteroids are found
in the asteroid belt, which
is a region between the
orbits of Mars and Jupiter.
The largest known
asteroid is Ceres, which
has a diameter of 590
miles (950 km). Asteroids
are debris left over from
the solar system's
formation; Jupiter's
powerful gravity
prevented them from
consolidating into a
planet.
