Who is the narrator, and what does he do for work? The narrator is Mr. Lemur Gulliver, and he is the ship's doctor. 2. How did Gulliver get to Lilliput? He was aboard the Antelope in the South-Sea when a storm caused the ship to wreck (and subsequently the life boat to overturn). He swam and found land, which he later found was Lilliput. 3. Briefly describe the Lilliputians physical appearance. They were very small - only about 6" in height, and everything in Lilliput was scaled proportionally to them. 4. What physical characteristic differentiates the Emperor of Lilliput from his subjects? "He is taller by almost a breadth of [Gulliver's] nail than any of his court" . . . 5. What kind of living accommodations did the Emperor provide for Gulliver? The Emperor had Gulliver taken to the largest ancient temple in the kingdom. He was chained by the leg, but was able to walk in the courtyard and lie down in the building. 6. The Emperor delivered six Lilliputians who had "attacked" Gulliver to him for justice. What did Gulliver do with them? He picked them up and put them in his pocket. One by one he scared them by acting as if he would eat them, then he set them free. 7. When the Lilliputians try to decide what to do with Gulliver what two means of death do they consider before deciding to let him live? They consider starvation or shooting him with poisoned arrows. 8. For what purpose do the Lilliputians learn rope dancing and "leaping and creeping"? What were Gulliver's nine conditions of freedom? 1. Gulliver won't leave without permission. 2. He won't go into the city without permission and two hours warning to the citizens. 3. Walk only on high road - not in meadows or fields. 4. Won't step on anyone or anything and won't pick up people without their permission. 5. Will carry messenger for Emperor once a month if necessary. 6. Will be ally of Lilliput against Blefuscu. 7. Will help with construction and physical labor. 8. Will survey circumference of Lilliput. 9. For obedience to above, Gulliver will be fed as much food as 1728 Lilliputians would eat. 11. What are the two political factions in Lilliput? The two political factions in Lilliput are the High Heels and the Low Heels. There are more High heels in the country, but the Low Heels are currently in power. 12. About what are the Lilliputians and Blefuscuians fighting? Blefuscuians break their eggs on the big end, as was the religious custom until the present Lilliputian Emperor's grandfather decreed eggs should be broken on the small end. Big-Endians (who fled to Blefuscu) and Little-Endians (Lilliputians) have been fighting over which end of the egg to break first. Book One - V - VIII 1. How did Gulliver help Lilliput against the Blefuscuians? He made cables with hooks, crossed the water, hooked the cables to the Blefuscuian ships and pulled them back to Lilliput. 2. The Emperor wanted Gulliver to do more to help him finally crush the Blefuscuians so he could be emperor of all the lands. What was Gulliver's response? Gulliver "plainly protested, that [he] would never be an instrument of bringing a free and brave people into slavery." 3. Briefly describe the Lilliputian educational system. Children of nobility and means boarded at public nurseries where they were raised and educated with minimum family contact. There were four kinds of nurseries; those being for noble boys, noble girls, ordinary boys and ordinary girls. Children of commons laborers were not educated. 16
