The Netherlands literally means "low countries". The name refers to the fact that
about half of the country lies below sea level, and indeed would be under water
were it not for the ingenious system of dikes and dams that prevent the land from
flooding. Noordwijk, a 'Blue Flag' seaside resort of international fame, situated
between Amsterdam and The Hague, lies on the coast and has a 13km long
sandy beach. In the heart of the Dutch bulb-growing area (Keukenhof) Noordwijk
is often described as the flower seaside resort of Europe
