The Secret Life of Walter Mittye
(Das erstaunliche Leben des Walter Mitty)
(D: Ben Stiller; Cast: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Adam Scott) Ben Stiller (»Night at the Museum«, »Zoolander«) directs and stars in James
Thurber’s classic story of a day-dreamer who escapes his anonymous
life by disappearing into a world of fantasies filled with heroism, romance and action. When his job along with that of his co-worker
(Wiig; »Bridesmaids«) are threatened, Walter takes action in the real
world embarking on a global journey that turns into an adventure
more extraordinary than anything he could have ever imagined. The
adventure fantasy drama is an uplifting journey through physical and
fantastical worlds and features a satisfying blend of surreal fantasy,
droll comedy and great poignancy.
All is Loste
(D: J.C. Chandor; Cast: Robert Redford) Written and directed by
Academy Award nominee J.C. Chandor (»Margin Call«), this tense
open-water drama is a gripping, visceral and powerfully moving tribute to ingenuity and resilience. Deep into a solo voyage in the Indian
Ocean, an unnamed man (Redford) wakes to find his yacht taking
on water after a collision with a shipping container left floating on
the high seas. With his navigation equipment and radio disabled, the
man sails unknowingly into the path of a violent storm. With the sun
unrelenting, sharks circling and his meager supplies dwindling, the
ever-resourceful sailor soon finds himself staring his mortality in the
face. The movie is rigorous, serious and well-crafted, with a spectacular, galvanizing display of how Redford, now 77, can still commandeer
the screen.
Dianae
(D: Oliver Hirschbiegel; Cast: Naomi Watts, Naveen Andrews,
Douglas Hodge) Acclaimed director Oliver Hirschbiegel’s (»Der Untergang«, »Das Experiment«) moving drama takes audiences into the
private realm of one the world’s most iconic and inescapably public
women - the Princess of Wales, Diana (played by two-time Oscar
nominee Naomi Watts; »Ring«, »The Impossible«), in the tumultuous last two years of her meteoric life. Set at the moment when Diana
stood on the cusp of a different life, evolving into a global humanitarian, a master of maneuvering fame and becoming her own woman,
the film explores Diana’s final rite of passage: a secret love affair with
Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan (Andrews, TV’s »LOST«), the
human complications of which reveal the Princess’s climactic days in a
compelling new light.
12 Years a Slavee
(D: Steve McQueen; Cast: Chiwetel Ejiofor, Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch) Based on the incredible and shamefully true story of one man’s fight for survival and freedom, this powerful and extraordinary drama, set in the 1800s United States, follows
Solomon Northup (Ejiofor), a free black family man from upstate
New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery in the South. Facing
cruelty as well as unexpected kindness, Solomon struggles not only to
stay alive, but to retain his dignity. In the twelfth year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist
(Pitt) will forever alter his life. Powered by unflinching, excruciating
direction from McQueen, and arresting and affective performances
from Ejiofor and Fassbender, this is an award-worthy, authentic, stunning, and moving work about the darkest reaches of American history.
The Wolf of Wall Streete
(D: Martin Scorsese; Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Matthew
McConaughey) Revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese (»Gangs of New
York«, »Aviator«, »Hugo«) reteams with Leonardo DiCaprio on this
adaptation of New York stockbroker Jordan Belfort’s memoir surrounding his indulgent ride as a crooked banker that made headlines
in the 1990’s. From the American dream to corporate greed, Belfort
goes from penny stocks and righteousness to initial public offerings
and a life of corruption in the late 80s. Excess success and affluence in
his early twenties as founder of the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont
warranted Belfort the title - The Wolf of Wall Street. Money. Power.
Women. Drugs. Temptations were for the taking and the threat of
authority was irrelevant. For Jordan and his wolf pack, modesty was
quickly deemed overrated and more was never enough.
