During February, we join in the national celebration of Black History Month,
adding to our ongoing array of programs that reflect our many cultural
experiences.
We’ll focus on some defining moments, recognize current struggles, and
mark individual accomplishments, notably those of a true American icon,
Maya Angelou. The American Masters biography series takes us on a journey
through her prolific life as a singer, dancer, activist, poet, and writer in Maya
Angelou: And Still I Rise (2/21, page 18). Dr. Angelou inspired generations,
pushed boundaries, and gave people the
freedom to think about their history in a way
they never had before.
This unprecedented film weaves her
words with rare and intimate archival
photographs and videos that paint hidden
moments of her exuberant life, from her
upbringing in the Depression-era South, to
her inaugural speech for President Bill
Clinton. It also features a remarkable series
of interviews with friends and family, including Oprah Winfrey, Cicely Tyson, Quincy
Jones, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and
John Singleton.
WGBH’s long-running weekly series
Basic Black, which for more than 40 years has
been devoted to African American life and culture across New England, will
explore new topics and add fresh perspectives throughout the month. And
WGBH’s WORLD Channel brings us another strong line-up of cross-cultural
independent films and documentary premieres, and launches the fifth season
of our award-winning social issues series America ReFramed.
A sampling of other programs this month includes the new three-part
series Africa’s Great Civilizations (2/27, page 21), from our neighbor and
Harvard historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr., revealing the complexity and grandeur
of the civilizations that once flourished across the African continent. The Talk
(2/20, page 18) is a very current look at the conversation between parents of
color and their children, especially sons, about how to behave in encounters
with the police. And Smokey Robinson: The Library of Congress Gershwin Prize
for Popular Song (2/10, page 15), is a music special honoring the 50-year
career of rhythm and blues superstar Smokey Robinson as he receives this
national award.
It’s a privilege to offer this rich and varied collection of programs, this
month and every month, with your support, as we explore and reflect on both
our differing and shared experiences.

These lifelike robots infiltrate the natural
world to film surprising human-like
behavior—all captured from the animal’s point of view. Watch as animals display a wealth of extraordinary

Federal Building in Oklahoma City was
the target of the deadliest act of
domestic terrorism in American history.

Harsh Reality
Right out of today’s headlines, this
two-hour documentary considers the
conversation taking place all over the
country between parents of color and
their children, especially sons, about how
to behave if they’re stopped by the
police. With concerns far greater than a
speeding ticket, young people are advised to: always answer “yes sir,
no sir,” never talk back, don’t make any sudden movements, don’t put
your hands in your pockets, obey all commands, and if you think you
are falsely accused, save it for the police station. The film addresses
today’s America and presents personal stories to illustrate the issue
from multiple points of view—parent, child, police and community.

Art and Society
Long before Black Lives Matter became a rallying cry, Edythe Boone
embodied that truth as an artist, an educator, and a great-grandmother.
From humble Harlem beginnings, the indefatigable Edy has for decades
introduced underserved youth
and seniors to the transformative power of art. A New Color
shows how the legacy of one
resilient woman—commemorating the great events of
her time—reverberates
throughout a community,
builds multicultural bridges
through art, and inspires a
new generation.

Urban Renewal
For 70 years, a Chicago public housing community, known as Cabrini Green,
towered over Chicago’s most valuable neighborhoods. A looming reminder of
inequality and poverty, Cabrini’s high-rises were demolished and an African
American community cleared to make room for another social experiment:
mixed-income neighborhoods. 70 Acres in Chicago tells the volatile story of
this hotly contested
patch of land, while
looking unflinchingly
at race, class and
who has the right to
live in the city.

Having it Both Ways
The phrase “all men are created
equal” is the most powerful
ideal that comes out of the
American Revolution. But, at
the time of the writing of this
phrase, the origins of America
were already seeded with a
cruel contradiction because
many of the Southern
Founding Fathers were also
slave owners, including Thomas Jefferson, George Washington, James
Madison and Patrick Henry. Liberty & Slavery explores the paradox of
America’s Founding Fathers being champions of liberty, while simultaneously
champions of slavery.

Personal Identity
John Roland Redd was an African
American from Columbia, Missouri
who went to Hollywood in 1939 and
reinvented himself as a musician from
India. The newly-named Korla Pandit
found fame as an actor, spiritual guide
and recording artist, and was later
celebrated by a new generation of fans
who crowned him the Godfather of
Exotica music. Korla examines a life of
talent, determination, ingenuity and racial passing, a story not fully realized
until after his death in 1998.

Cultural Evolution
Lale Labuko, born and raised
in the Kara tribe in the Omo
Valley, attempts to reconcile
with Kara elders and end a
tradition based on a deeply
rooted superstition. Afropop:
Omo Child: The River and The
Bush follows Lale’s mission
to bring about a progressive
cultural shift that will save children’s lives and protect the longevity of his
people and his culture. On his journey he confronts his own death, and
negotiates the challenges of leading a cultural movement.

89.7 WGBH, Boston’s Local NPR®
ListenUp! at the BPL
This month, WGBH News reporters Craig LeMoult and Edgar B. Herwick III
continue their monthly listening series at WGBH Studio at the Boston Public
Library. The duo launched the series in October with “Scary Stories” and it
continues each month with a new theme. Each one-hour, live event delves
into the art of storytelling, starting with a group listening session featuring
select radio stories, followed by questions. The audience is invited to share
their own stories related to the session’s theme.
“There’s something powerful about sitting together, listening as a group,
and then having a real discussion about what each of us heard,” said LeMoult.
“We really feel the sense of community that exists in public radio.”
“From the 1920s to the 1950s, families, friends,
even groups of strangers gathered around the radio to
be informed, educated and entertained,” said Herwick.
“Just because we have newer technologies doesn’t
mean gathering and listening together isn’t inspiring
—and really fun.”
Follow WGBH News on Facebook for details about
the next ListenUp! event.
Checking Up on Health Care
This month, WGBH News examines the intersection of money and medicine,
including the 21st Century Cures Act passed by Congress and signed by
former President Obama late last year. The team will explain what this new
legislation means; investigate how it will impact health care costs for
Massachusetts residents; and discuss whether it will cure what ails our
nation’s health care industry.

Remembering Nina Simone
Approaching what would have been Nina
Simone’s 84th birthday, host Eric Jackson
remembers this seminal singer, pianist, and
songwriter by featuring her work in recordings made throughout her career. Simone,
whose eclectic collection of work spans jazz,
blues, soul, classical, R&B, pop, gospel, and world music, is considered
by many to be one of the most gifted vocalists of her generation.
Sun, 2/19 at 9pm
Through research and the latest statistics, WGBH News also will present
a report card scoring where our community stands on health care research,
rates of occurrence, prevention and treatment as well as some of the major
national health concerns, including cancer, Alzheimer’s Disease, obesity and
nutrition.
“Health care is one of the most pressing issues of
our time, and here in Boston we’re at the heart of the
latest research and development in this area,” said
Aaron Schachter, Executive Producer of WGBH News.
“Our reporting will take a much-needed pulse check of
where we are—and how far we still need to go.”
The series will air on 89.7 WGBH’s Morning Edition
throughout the month.

Valentine’s Day (February 14) beginning
at 5pm, we’ll playing only romantic favorites! You’ll enjoy the rich, warm, romantic
sounds of Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff,
Brahms and countless other great composers who have been inspired by love. Spend
your Valentine’s Day with WCRB and let us
express all the human heart’s emotions
that are best expressed by music. We’ll
leave the words to you!
For Presidents’ Weekend, we will feature pieces composed in presidential
election years. You’ll be able to play along and guess which president was
elected at the time each piece premiered. Given the depth of the classical
repertoire, we can take you all the way back to 1788!
On WCRB, all of our weekends are made special by our Saturday 8pm
broadcasts of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, hosted by Ron Della Chiesa,
and our highly acclaimed Sunday 7pm WCRB In Concert Series, featuring the
best of the ever-vibrant, Boston-area music scene, recorded in concert. The
complete listings for both of these series are below.
Also on Sunday nights, we are proud to present Sunday Night at the
Opera with Chris Voss. This month, sticking with presidential election years,
we’ll feature four operas that premiered in election years—1816, 1840,
1900 and 1916. They are: Rossini’s The Barber of Seville (February 5);
Donizetti’s The Daughter of the Regiment (February 12); Charpentier’s Louise
(February 19); and Richard Strauss’ Ariadne auf Naxos (February 26).
Remember, the more time you spend listening to WCRB, the better
you’ll feel!

Hidden History
By Mindy Todd, WCAI host and managing director for editorial
This month WCAI introduces a new series called Hidden History, produced by
WCAI Morning Edition co-host, Brian Morris. The series will focus on lesserknown historic events, places and people from around the WCAI listening
area, which includes Cape Cod, the Islands and the
South Coast. As Morris explains, “I’m looking to tell
stories that fly slightly under the
radar—stories that people in one
town may be familiar with, but
folks in other parts of our listening
area may not have heard before.”
Some of the first stories focus
on the story of the “Catalpa,” a New
Bedford whaling vessel that was
pressed into service by a Quaker whaling captain to undertake a
risky rescue of Irish prisoners from Australia. And while there is
no trace of it today, the Chatham Naval Air Station was used to
defend against U-boat attacks during World War I. Morris also
says that “history,” in this case, will encompass stories anywhere
from the 19th century right up to the 1960s.

In the early 1900’s, a number of leading American artists who’d gone
to study and paint in Europe returned to the US to escape the turmoil of
World War I. Many of these artists were attracted to Provincetown, and they
eventually banded together to establish a social club known as the
Beachcombers, which is still going strong after 100 years. Brian Morris talks
with the club’s current skipper Bill Evaul about the club’s
origin and what it takes to
become a member.
Hidden History segments will run during
WCAI’s Morning Edition and
