School implements security measures

The school district has been
working relentlessly to improve
the safety of its staff and students.
The district’s Safety Committee,
which has been in operation for
approximately one year, has
developed a District Safety Plan and
Continuous Improvement Plan.
These plans outline strategies that
are designed to enhance building
security and raise awareness of
the proper actions to perform in an
emergency situation.
“We do have safety measures in
place, and we are still refining those.
Valentine’s Day
Feb. 14
We will continue to refine those
to make our building as secure as
possible. That is our whole goal,”
said Mr. Jerry Parsons, Wadsworth
High School Principal.
One of the most important features
of the plans is the development of a
new lockdown procedure that will be
taught to students in the 2013 school
year. This lockdown replaces the
current, passive strategy of hiding
with a more aggressive approach.
Classroom doors will not only
be locked but also barricaded, and
students will be encouraged to spread
out and use readily available items,
such as textbooks, for self-defense.
“Because our safety plan is not new,
it is very extensive and very good.
This aspect of it, the past few years
switching from a passive lockdown
to a more aggressive lockdown, I
think it is just going to improve our
safety plan,” said Mr. Steve Moore,
Associate Principal and member of
the Safety Committee.
Administrators are to be trained for
the drill in January, staff in March,
and students in April. Students will
not be required to attend school on
March 28 while the staff is being
trained.
Clear communication will also
be heavily emphasized during the
training. Through the use of phones
and the PA system, administrators
hope to communicate exactly what
the threat is and its location to staff.
In this way, individual classrooms
and wings can decide whether it is
better to prepare to barricade and
defend or evacuate via the newly
established evacuation points.
The school system is also working
to build a stronger bond with the
safety forces. There will be more
police presence patrolling the high
school campus, especially during
high-traffic times. Officer Innocenti,
the school’s liaison officer, as
well as other policemen are being
encouraged to walk through the high
school and build relationships with
the students.
By doing this, administrators hope
that students will no longer find
police presence alarming but rather
see the officers as familiar faces that
they can talk to and trust.
In order to help prevent tragedy, the
high school will continue to practice
a perimeter lockdown after 7:35 a.m.
Also, administrators ask that students
report any rumors that deal with the
endangerment of the school to staff
members immediately. They remind
students not to spread or exaggerate
the rumors to their peers; the school
system will warn the community of
the threat appropriately.
Parents are also encouraged to
contact staff with any concerns.
Ultimately, the more information the
administrators receive, the safer the
school remains.
As Mr. Moore stated, “It takes all
of us to keep the building safe.”

Sandy Hook remembered forever
By Carly Cundiff
Twenty children and seven
adults were killed at Sandy Hook
Elementary School on Dec. 14,
2012 in the second largest school
shooting in the nation’s history.
Adam Lanza, 20, fatally shot
twenty first graders and six staff
members in the small Newtown,
Connecticut school before turning
the gun on himself. Two others
were wounded in the attack.
Lanza entered Sandy Hook at
9:40 a.m. after killing his mother
at the home they shared. He was
armed with three sami-automatic
firearms that belonged to his

the school, where he made his way
through two first-grade classrooms
before committing suicide.
Police entered the building at
9:45 a.m., going room by room
searching out other shooters and
clearing survivors, who ran to a
nearby firehouse.
Adam Lanza lived with his
mother five miles from the
elementary school and had
attended the school for a short
period of time. Nancy Lanza, his
mother, was a gun enthusiast and
often took her sons to the local
shooting range.

iPhone or Android
iPhone
Android
By mathias zollinger
by Devon Gilkerson
I prefer the iPhone over any
Android phone for a number of
different reasons. They have faster
Internet speed and simpler, easier to
understand design. Also, the texting
is much better with an iPhone.
I had a Droid before my iPhone 4
and I absolutely hated it. None of my
apps would ever work, and it seemed
that no matter where I went I could
never receive Internet service. Now,
with my iPhone I can surf the Internet
everywhere and my apps load quicker
than ever before.
With my Droid, it was annoying
having to figure out where all the
apps were spread out throughout the
phone. On the iPhone they are all
placed next to each other wherever
you feel like placing them.
Finally, the texting is much faster
with the iPhone. It sends immediately.
Plus, the iPhone has fantastic,
colorful emojis while Droids only
have strange green faces.
I like Android better because I can
download free music and sometimes
I find cool apps that are free on the
Droid market and cost money on the
Apple store.
I used to have an iPhone until it
broke. I was crushed and hated the
idea of having a Droid. However,
it did not take long for it to grow on
me and now I am a Droid lover. It is
very easy to navigate and I have no
trouble finding what I need when I
need it. iPhones are overrated. You are
paying for a name. If no names were
involved with technology, I guarantee
the majority of cellular devices being
used would be Droids.
I am often asked, “If you could go
back to your iPhone, would you?”
My answer is simply, “No.” I have
fallen madly in love with my Droid
and would not trade it for any other
phone, except maybe a better Droid.
My Droid makes me happy which is
all that matters.
Choose to smile
Editorial
Because of all of the distress and
tragedies going on in the world
around us, it is often easy to feel
sad or discouraged. The struggling
economy, great natural disasters,
high crime rates, and continuing
wars around the world have
become the norm of what we hear
on the 6 o’clock news every
night. Despite all of these
struggles, however, we here
at The Bruin believe there is
still much to smile about.
Sir John Lubbock said,
“What we see depends
mainly on what we look
for.”
We all know how easy it
is to find negativity in this
world, but if we choose to
seek it, happiness and hope
can be found as well.
For starters, we are all students
a school that offers an amazing
education that teenagers in other
countries only dream of receiving.
Rather than complaining or
groaning
when
your
math
teacher assigns a long homework
assignment, remember that you are so
blessed to have the teachers, books, and
educational opportunities you have.
Another reason to smile is the
beautiful place in which we live.
Ohio may bring cold temperatures,
but the site of a newly fallen snow is
undeniably breath-taking. Whether it
is the stunning colors of the leaves in
the fall, or newly blooming flowers in
the spring, Northeast Ohio always has a
picturesque setting if we take a moment
to recognize it.
People often base their happiness
upon material items in which they do
or do not have, but one blessing we all
have is the people in our lives. Though
all of our friends and families are
different, we are surrounded by people
who love and support us. Our teachers,
coaches, friends, parents, and siblings
do so much for us to provide us with
the things we need to make our future
bright.
There is always, always, always,
something to be thankful for. Despite
the chaos in the world around us, we
can find happiness and hope, if only we
choose to recognize it and smile about
it.

Dear Editor,
I honestly cannot believe any of this.
I cannot imagine being one of those
parents, or any of those kids who saw their
classmates and friends killed. This would be
a terrible tragedy any time of the year, but
I feel like it happening around Christmas
makes it even worse. Especially being this
close to Christmas. All the parents would
have already bought their kid’s gifts, and
now there are no kids but plenty of gifts at
home waiting for them. On the news on
Friday night, one of the teachers was telling
what her students were saying while hiding
out in a 3 by 2 foot bathroom. They were
saying they just want to go home and hug
their parents and they just wanted to go
have Christmas. This breaks my heart and
I truly wish there was something someone
could do to take it all back so that it never
even happened.
Paige Moore, 12
Dear Editor,
My reaction to the Newtown tragedy
is horrified. When I first heard of the
shooting, I couldn’t believe it. I thought it
was a joke. I watched the news for hours.
I even cried. It breaks my heart that a
person would take the lives of 26 innocent
people for no reason. It makes it even
worse that 20 of the 26 people were little
kids. 20 kids futures were taken away by
someone so selfish. No parents should
have to bury their kids. To make matters
worse, they have to right before Christmas.
Out of all the bad, I think we should give
our respects to the teachers that risked
their lives for their students. I idolize all
of them. My prayers go out to all of the
families of the passed.
Jordin Vidmar, 10
Dear Editor,
The tragedy at Sandy Hook was more
than just a state wide emergency. It has
sparked a nation wide debate over gun
control. Although this is a big part of it, I
believe that before we should talk about
this, it is necessary to remember the lives
that were lost all due to one man. This man
who walked into an Elementary School in
Newtown, Conneticut and changed the
lives of siblings, families, and friends of
the children and adults that died at Sandy
Hook. These children never got to enjoy
this Christmas of 2012 and this is important
to remember Many people believe that the
name of the shooter should be forgotten in
order to remember what really matters and
that is the deaths. The people of this small
town may never be the same, and the nation
may never be the same as well.
Ashraf Hoblos,12
Dear Editor,
Just to think all those kids were ready
and excited for Christmas. It is so heart
breaking to just think about it. Their
innocent lives were stripped from them.
It was just a normal Friday and their
lives were taken away. I pray for all the
families and the town of Newton.
Rory Finegan, 10
Shane Mast, 10
Dear Editor,
What happened in Newtown,
Connecticut was completely outrageous.
There is no reason in the world that
someone should go shoot elementary
kids and their teachers. What in the
world did these little kids do to anybody?
The answer is they did nothing! All the
people killed were innocent people and
killed for no reason at all. What some
of the teachers did was incredible. They
took bullets for their students to save their
lives. That is so incredible. The support
the people in Newtown are getting is
awesome. Everybody in the country
is doing whatever they can do to show
support. Even sports teams are showing
support. The George Mason wrestling
team wrestled at Madison Square
Garden on Sunday and to show their
support they wrote a name of a victim
on their headgear. Also, NBA superstar,
Kevin Durant, wrote “Newtown” on his
shoes before his game to show support.
The New England Patriots even put
a sticker on the back of their helmets
to show support. I feel awful for what
has happened to these families and my
thoughts and prayers go out to them.
Dominic Cart, 11
Dear Editor,
I really don’t even know where to begin.
It is so devastating and sad to know that
someone killed 20 innocent elementary
school kids and 6 adults. While we are
preparing for the holidays, those families
are preparing for funerals and learning
to cope with their loss. It is hard to
understand what they are going through
because none of us truly know unless we
have been down the same road. I briefly
heard about it in history at school Friday,
but when I got home it was all over
Twitter and Instagram. It all happened so
fast that I didn’t want to believe it. I just
wanted to wake up from a dream and go
back to what I was doing before, but we
all know that is not the case. The teachers
are true heroes for risking their lives to
save the students.

Engine failure causes crash
BY VERONICA LLEWELLYN
On Dec. 29, 2012, a
swimmer, who was drowning
at Copacabana Beach in Rio de
Janeiro, Brazil, was supposed
to be rescued by a helicopter
search and rescue team.
A member of the crew opened
the door to the helicopter
ready to rescue the stranded
swimmer when the helicopter
started to spiral downwards into
the ocean in front of a crowd of
more than 400 people.
It was said that the crash was
caused by engine failure. As
it got closer to the water, the
raging waves swallowed the
helicopter.
Once the helicopter was
completely submerged in the
water, a few of the people
watching from the shore
swam out to help the crew

the language grammatically. Another
situation the government must
consider is whether or not the child will
be embarrassed by that name in the
future. Other rules for Icelandic names
are that the names must be gender
specific and one person can have no
more than three personal names.
“I had no idea that the name was
not on the list, the famous list of
names that you can choose from,”
said Bjork Eidsdottir, Blaer’s mother.
She was unaware that the name was
not on the list until the priest who
baptized her daughter told he that
he had accidentally allowed it. This
surprised her because she had known
a Blaer whose name was accepted in
1973. This time the name Blaer was
rejected by the naming committee
because it is a masculine article.
“So many strange names have been
allowed, which makes this even more
frustrating because Blaer is a perfectly
Icelandic name. It seems like a basic
human right to be able to name your
child what you want, especially if
it does not harm your child in any
way. My daughter loves her name,”
concluded Bjork.

New year inspires attainable resolutions
January 2013
OPINION BY MATT
The beginning of the new year
symbolizes many different things
for students. For some it might be
a chance to start over, while for
others, this might be the year they
really try to live life to the fullest.
If you are still in winter mode,
and a little late on the whole
resolution list, I might be able to
help.
I have compiled the five most
common resolutions with the
highest achieved ratings so you
can start the new year with a plan.
1. Lose weight.
It does not come as a surprise
that the number one resolution is
to lose weight. With the opening
of the YMCA, this should be an
easy goal to start with.
The new facility features a
competitive pool and workout
machines. Plus, the convenience
of being right next to the school.
All of this leaves nothing to be
desired by those looking to hit
their target weight. Well, nothing
more than a membership and
some dedication.
2. Spend more time with
friends and family.
For the senior class, these
might be the last few months
living at home before you leave
for college, so this resolution only
makes sense.
Whether you are going to
college close by or far away, your
parents and friends are going to
miss you and vice versa. Time
is something you will never get
back, so try not to waste any time
on this one.
Trust me underclassmen,you
may not be thinking about it now,
but senior year will be here before
you know it. Make sure to take
advantage of this now.
3. Volunteer.
Volunteering always seems to
be one of those resolutions that
are a “for sure”, but then fallout
as the year progresses. Make
sure this is the year you actually
follow through with it. No more
excuses.
The
school
offers
so
many different volunteering
opportunities, giving you a wide
spread of options depending on
what interests you.
Some of the benefits are
meeting new people and really
experiencing a feeling that you
have made a difference in some
way.
4. Try something new.
“Life is too short”. How
many times have you heard this
expression? Odds are, more times
than you can count. Whether you
want to admit it or not, that phrase
has some truth to it.
What about: “I will do it
tomorrow.” Now, which one have
you used more often?
Here is something to consider;
if you want to do something bad
enough,what is holding you back
from doing it?
From there, determine if it is
reasonable enough to keep you
from trying something you have
always wanted to.
5. Improve your overall
fitness.

Before you say anything, I
know what you are thinking, but
this is different from the first
resolution. Granted, the two are
very similar and might go handin-hand for some people this year.
Honestly, if you want to get in
shape the best advice I can give is
to fully commit. No one can do it
for you, have to do it yourself.
Good luck with your new
resolutions, I know you can do it.

Too late to unplug
opinion by leah
Technology is taking over
everyday life. While it is beneficial
for research and looking up facts,
many people are completely
dependent on electronics.
People are becoming unable to
hold a conversation, be social, or
pay attention to their surroundings.
It is estimated that there are six
billion cell phone subscriptions
world wide.
Teens cannot even go out to
dinner without having the bright
light of a smart phone reflecting
off their faces.
Even at sleepovers with their
closest friends, teens cannot have
a conversation that does not have
something to do with drama on
social networking.
“At sleepovers my friends and I
snapchat each other when we are
in the same room.” said Regan
Kilbride, 11.
This generation and younger
generations are becoming unable
to have full conversations in
person. People are losing their
communication skills because it is
much easier to send a text than it is
to talk in person. It is even easier
than calling someone elses phone.
People do not even have to
leave their houses anymore to
buy trendy outfits and accessories.
With websites like Wanelo you
can sit at home and shop.
Ordering take-out is becoming
more and more popular. People
can call in and order, or they can
completely avoid a conversation
with another person by placing the
order online.
You can walk around any city
and see about every person looking
down and not paying attention to
their surroundings.
“I run into someone every
morning because I am always
looking down at my phone,”
Brock Swartzbaugh, 9 said about
the distractions of electronics.
While electronics make life
easier, they also take away some
of our basic social skills.
What does this mean for our
future?
Many kids and even adults will
not be able to introduce themselves
to a new person. People say things
to others through text messaging
and email that they would never
say face-to-face. Teens have way
too much confidence when they
are hiding behind their keyboards.
This can lead to cyber bullying.
The biggest problem with excess
technology in the near future is that
people will not let themselves be
bored. People always have to be
entertained. Whether it is music,
a game, or going through a social
networking site, people always
have to be looking at something
on the internet.
When people drive they often
have Facebook or Twitter open.
At red lights the first thing almost
everyone does is look at their
phone, and they often become
anxious if they are not able to read
their notifications or reply to a text
message.
During each class, at least
eighty-five percent of students
look at their phone because
something on it can get them
away from learning something
“uninteresting” for even a few
seconds.
With entertainment at our
finger tips, who can blame us for
avoiding boredom? But downtime
is important too.
When people cannot look at
an electronic device they become
angry and frustrated. When a
student gets their phone taken
away they instantly become angry
at the teacher or faculty member.
Sometimes students even cry. This

Teens sit on their phones while hanging out with their friends. This generation has
a very high dependence on electronics.
proves how hard it is for people to
be “unplugged.”
Kids are getting tablets and
iPods younger and younger each
generation, and they become
accustomed to cell phones from
earliest ages of childhood.
The reliance on electronics is
becoming greater, which means
peoples’ frustration will only
increase and their social skills
slowly disappear.
It is not reasonable to say we
should completely “disconnect”
from something we have
grown up with, but we do need
to be more independent from
electronics.

New year will not disappoint
OPINIO N BY
CONNOR JOH N
As I look into my crystal ball,
I can see glimpses of the future.
I can easily predict what will
happen in the coming year but
I must warn you that some of it
may not come true at all. If all of
my prediction are to become true,
2013 will be a wild year.
5. Browns and Cavs
The Browns will get the sixth
pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. They
will have a chance to either take
the 16th quarterback since 1999
or Alabama corner back Dee
Milliner.
They will realize that every
quarterback that they draft
sucks anyways and decide on
the highly touted corner from
Bama. However, I cannot look
deep enough into the future to
determine what his career will be
like. Milliner will announce how
happy he is to be with the Browns
and roll tide.
The Cavaliers will enter the
NBA lottery and get the second
pick in the draft. Having yet
another lottery pick for the third
year in a row, they will have a
choice take any player in the nation
besides Shabazz Muhammad, who
will be the first pick. They can
now take just about any player
in the draft and choose the 6’8”,
239 lbs. forward from Kentucky,
Alex Poythress. He will become
this missing piece for a Cavalier
playoff run next season.
4. Mark Zuckerberg
Mark
Zuckerberg,
Chief
executive of Facebook, Inc.,
will sell the once popular social
networking site for a tune of $100
billion and will take a lot of heat
for it. This will be bigger news
than when Tom from Myspace
sold his once popular social
networking site.
The savvy entrepreneur will
then have enough money to retire

and live a great life or he will
start another company. I doubt
he will create another company
in the same year that he sells
Facebook, but his name will
rise in speculations of another
Zuckerberg project, eventually.
3. Lance Armstrong
Lance Armstrong, cancer
survivor, (former) seven-time
Tour de France, and blood doping
icon, will be under some of the
most heat that a former athlete
has ever seen.
The cycling star has recently
admitted to the use of blood
doping. He has been taking fire
from the media, social networks,
and people. In 2013, the verbal
abuse will continue and he will
go off into a spiraling downfall.
His LiveStrong foundation,
that has raised over $470 million,
will still receive donations but
donators will look to other
charities/foundations to donate
their money.

imaginary girlfriend and the BCS
National Championship.
News recently hit that the
story of his girlfriend dying was
a hoax. Once the news dropped
like a lead balloon, the internet
exploded with jokes, allegations,
and questions.
I predict that Te’o will not be
over the death until 2014 or until
he finds a real girlfriend.
1. Bill Clinton 2.0
A major sex scandal will rail
Washington D.C. This will be eerily
similar to what happened with Bill
Clinton during his presidency, but
will be an even bigger shock to the
nation.
President Obama will not be the
one involved with the scandal at all.
The government official who will
be involved is yet to be determined
but he will be fired and declared a
failure to the nation.
Mr. President will hold a press
conference about the matter and
the unidentified official will
publish his official statement and
announce his resignation.

Biggest winners, losers of 2012
OPINIO N BY
RI CHARD PATRI CK
People say that great things take
time; 365 days is enough time
for anyone to make a name for
themselves. 2012 had a few greats,
but there are always those who do
not have Lady Luck on their sides.
Here are the winners and losers of
the past year.
The most obvious winner of the
year is Barack Obama because he
gets to be the president of the best
country in the whole world: The
United States of ‘Merica.
Unfortunately, where there is
a winner there has to be a loser.
Poor Mitt Romney takes the role
of loser in this epic scenario. Even
though Romney lost the election,
he is still a millionaire.
In the basketball world, LeBron
James is king. His nickname,
first given to him during his
high school days, finally came
true during the summer of 2012.
James finally got the ring to
go with his already impressive
resume. James also had his best
season as a pro. He averaged
27.1 points, 6.2 assists, and 7.9
rebounds per game. James also
won regular season and Finals
MVP and added a gold medal
from the 2012 Summer Olympics
held in London.
Just like the election, where
there is a winner, there is a loser.
In Lebron’s case, Cleveland is
the loser. The three major sports
teams of Cleveland; the Browns,
Indians, and Cavaliers, combined
for a record of 94-150.
One of the biggest winners
of 2012 is Bruce Wayne. Also
known as The Dark Knight, this
winner saved the greatest city
in the fictional world, Gotham.
Not only is he a hero to citizens
of Gotham, but also to men all
around the world. He gets the
girl; that fine honey, Cat Woman
in Florence.
I would call Carly Rae Jepsen a
winner in my book. I would also
just call her in general. Jepsen
topped the charts for 2012 with
her hit single, Call Me Maybe.
Jepsen is also touring with Justin
Bieber, and I would call that
winning! My colleague Connor
has not predicted anything in her
near future, however I can predict
that there will be more hits from
this star.
Michael Phelps has always been
a winner. Twenty-two overall
medals, including 18 gold in his
career is an all-time record. For
someone who considered not
participating in the 2012 London
Olympics, Phelps was a major
contributor to the U.S. swim team.
Just this year Phelps reiterates his
dominance with six medals.
Almost every winner in the
history of sports has been an ardent
supporter of Nike. The attitude of
a true winner is most famously
stated in their ad campaign, “Just
Do It.” Some winners that Nike
sponsors include Michael Jordan,
Tiger Woods and Kobe Bryant.
The Penn State football team
was a huge loser in 2012. After
the controversy surrounding the
program and Jerry Sandusky, the
team received brutal punishment.
The NCAA banned them from
bowl games for four years,
imposed massive scholarship
reductions, and vacated all wins
from 1998 to 2011.
When stressful situations like
the one at Penn State occur, many
turn to a
sweet snack such as Twinkies.
Unfortunately, 2012 was not very
kind to this American delicacy.
Hostess went bankrupt this past
year, and Twinkies were bought
out by a Mexican billionaire
family. Anything going from
America to Mexico is losing.
Speaking of countries other
than the U.S. of A., another loser
of 2012 is Canada. The Great
White North is not so great after
all. They have yet to grasp the
concept of bacon and their most
popular sport is hockey. Come on
Canada!
Jeremy Britt is a man of a
special breed. He managed to be
a winner and a loser at the same
time. This winner of The Biggest
Loser dropped some serious
pounds to make this list.

Top songs of 2012
“Call Me Maybe” is the best song of 2012
OPINION BY DYLAN PALIDAR
There were many great songs
released in this past year. Many
had secret meanings, while others
had emotions in their sound.
These top 10 songs were based
off the MTV top 10 songs.
1. “Call Me Maybe” - Carly
Rae Jepson: This hit song made it
to the top of Billboard’s Top 100
songs of the summer for 2012.
Singer, Carly Rae Jepson became
the newest hit artist from Canada,
to go along side of Justin Beiber.
This catchy song could get stuck
inside of anyones head. Even our
very own baseball team jumped
on the bandwagon with this song.
They could often be found singing
it on the way back from baseball
games and even in the dugouts.
2. “We Are Young” - Fun.:
Though I personally did not enjoy
this song, the band Fun, joined
the other boy bands that have
been coming back to the scene
lately. Their single was in the top
spot on Billboards Hot 100 for six
weeks straight.
3. “Somebody That I Use To
Know”- Gotye: It seemed that
people of all ages and countries
caught onto this song this year. It
was even my grandma’s favorite
song, and it hit the number one
spot in almost every country in
the world. I am looking forward
to seeing Gotye create more
successful songs.
4. “What Makes You Beautiful”One Direction: Even though
boys often complain about One
Direction, there is no denying this
band’s recent success. Girls all
over the world enjoy listening to
One Direction, and specifically
being told that they are beautiful.
5. “Starships” - Nicki Minaj:
Nicki Minaj is a popular artist that
has a mean girl image, and it was
quite the year for her. This song
was number one on the charts
for a record-setting 21 weeks
straight.
6. “We Are Never Getting
Back Together” - Taylor Swift:
This supposed country song was
number six for 2012. The song
is quite catchy with “Never Ever”
playing over and over. Many
people have sang this song around
the school, and it has persuaded
some to never get back with their
ex.
7. “Mercy” - Kanye West: This
song reached number one on the
Billboard Hot 100 until people
noticed its actual meaning. When
fans realized the true meaning
behind the song, it lost most of its
popularity. Despite this decline,
however, “Mercy” still managed
to reach the number seven spot on
MTV’s top 10 songs.
8. “Gangnam Style” - PSY:
It may be hard to believe that a
song spoken almost entirely in
a different language became a
number one song in the United
States, but “Gangam Style” did
just that. The hilarious dance to
this song may have been a large
reason why it became so popular.
9. “Glad You Came” - The
Wanted: According to MTV, this
song’s popularity came as a big
surprise. Like all of the other
songs, it peaked at number one.
The song came out in 2011, but it
did not get much hype until 2012;
when its popularity really began
to spark.
10. “Payphone” - Maroon
5: Most people do not use pay
phones these days, and some may
not even know what a payphone
is, but this song was relatable for
many in 2012. This song featured
rapper Wiz Kalifa and taught
that money should not matter in a
relationship.
2012 was unforgettable. MTV’s
top 10 songs set dozens of records
during the year.

You shoes, you lose
BY ABBY MCNUTT
Shoes are definitely one of the
most popular and most needed
accessories in making a fashion
statement. In the year of 2012, the
top ten shoe brands were taken by
surprise. When making a fashion
statement one probably expects
it to be a girl thing, but all top
ten brands are all athletic based
brands of shoes.
1. Adidas: Adidas shoes
topped off the top ten shoe
brands in 2012. These shoes are
commonly found in many sports
teams and personal stashes. They
give a sporty trend to society and
can be found in many different
colors and styles.
2. Nike: Being number two,
Nike is not solely focused on the
clothing lines, which also go out
the roof in sales, but their shoe
line is off the hook. Nike offers
many fun and crazy mixes of
clothes and many different styles
for both women and men.
3. Reebok: Reebok shoes are
found commonly within more
boys than girls. The new crazy
trend for 2012 was the Reebok
Zigkicks. If you did not own a
pair of those crazy zig-zag shoes
in the 2012 year, you were really
missing out on a trendy, crazy,
zig-zagging look of the year.
4. Puma: Not big on all the
extra gadgets on the basic tennis
shoe? Then Puma’s are the
shoes for you. These shoes offer
a stylish, athletic look with not
much but a sole at the bottom.
If you are in need of some aid to
your speed, the famous jaguar on
the side will do the trick!
5. Fila: Number five on the
charts is the newly known Fila
shoes. Fila offers the crazy looking
skele-toes shoes that are similar to
socks but can be worn outdoors.
These shoes can be shocking to
one’s eye when first seen, but
maybe once you understand what
is actually going on they just might
be the shoes for you!
6. Keds: These simple shoes
give off a spring look and are
comfortable and cute. Mostly
worn by women, Keds offer a
laid back, casual look for a nice
spring outfit. You can find them
in many different styles, colors,
and designs to complete your
look.
7.Converse:
Coming
at
number seven, Converse are a
big time hit in many high schools
and communities. Many women
and men pull off the Converse
look and can add a trendy, oldfashion touch to any daily outfit.
Converse can be pulled off
wearing pretty much anything
and everything.
8. K-Swiss: If you are looking
for a big bulky shoe, or a crazy
design and giant mix of different
colors, you can find them within
this brand. K-Swiss offers shoes
of all sizes for everyone.
9. New Balance: This brand
offers many different types of
athletic shoes. Some shoes can be
pulled off when wearing a nicer
outfit and others not so much.
New Balance also offers many
fun colors and designs to men,
women, and children.
10. Under Armour: This
brand is very well known in
athletes for their clothing, but
also for their footwear. You can
find every shoe under the sun
here that you may need for any
sport of activity you are thinking
of proceeding. If you are looking
for a good pair of shoes for a new
hobby, Under Armour has it all.
You thought you had it all, well
check again. If you do not own
one of these athletic shoes then
you are missing out on a great
time.

Top ten news stories of 2012
The stories of the year that entertained us
BY MARIA SANSONETTI
There were many highs and
lows that came out of 2012. Some
were as good and traditional as
the London Summer Olympics
with American gold medalists,
and some lows were devastating
deaths and miseries. These are the
top ten news stories of 2012.
10. Whitney Houston - 48
year old singing star, Whitney
Houston, died Feb. 11th, 2012
with a drug overdose in a Beverly
Hills hotel room. Her family had
no idea of the drugs being used,
and the whole world mourned
about the terrible loss of such a
pop icon.
“When I heard the news, I could
not stop myself from bursting
into tears,” said sophomore Tim
Knipl. “I still get emotional about
it to this day.”
9. Gangnam Style - This
record breaking song came out
in the summer of 2012, and was
instantly a hit with its easy to
learn dance. It became the top
searched YouTube video passing
Justin Bieber’s single, “Baby.”
8. Honey Boo Boo - Six year
old pageant star, Alana, and her
crazy family became an instant
reality show sensation on TLC.
They are now on their second
season of Here Comes Honey
Boo Boo.
7. Justin Bieber - The best
selling Canadian music artist
released his CD, Believe, on June
12, 2012. Bieber was also named
Forbes Magazine’s third most
powerful celebrity on Earth.
6. The Royal Baby - The Duke
and Dutchess of Cambridge are
expecting a royal baby! The baby
will be third in line for the throne
of England.
“I cannot wait to see what the
baby looks like!” said sophomore
Jennifer Rhoades. “It is going to
be so cute!”
5. U.S. Election - The 2012
election was a very close race
between President Barack Obama
and Governor Mitt Romney. All

The fashion trends
that ruled 2012
BY BROOKE LEONARD
When one reflects on the past
year, it is hard to ignore the
outrageous trends that dominated
the last twelve months. The
decision must be made: what
should be kept in 2012, and
what should be integrated into
2013? To help each individual
make this decision, a list has
been compiled of what should
stay and what should go.
10.) Crop tops with long camis:
Although they were fun in the
summer months, they have no right
to rule the winter and upcoming
spring
fashion
selections.
9.) Combat boots: While the
masculine feeling may have
been a refreshing break from
Uggs and riding boots, they must
stay in 2012 for the sole reason
that they just are not attractive.
8.)
Sock
buns:
The
ruling is unanimous; save
them
for
the
ballerinas.
7.) Ear chains: Some students
may have found the punk look
appealing, but these really
should have been left in the
twentieth century, where they
belong.
Kassie Kirven, 10,
said, “Earcuffs with the chains
look like something from
the ‘90s . They are hideous!”
6.) Vera Bradley satchels: The
eye-catching and bright, floral
patterned bags were extremely
popular during the previous
school year, and some even
trickled into the current one.
Although there still may be fans
out there, they are decidedly out.
5.) Floral pants: It has been
decided that these beauties
will be introduced into the
New Year. Since the extremely
unpopular rules that make
it nearly impossible to wear
leggings and yoga pants, an
alternative to jeans has been
sought out. With spring dawning
upon us, the flowery patterns
will suit the season successfully.
4.) Moto jackets: After
Christmas, moto jackets have
been spotted everywhere. A
sassy mix between the classic
leather jacket and the casual
blazer,
moto
jackets
are
guaranteed success this year.
3.)
Oversized
sweaters:
They come in a multitude of
colors, patterns, and fabrics,
while still remaining extremely
comfortable.
Oversized
sweaters are the saving grace
for students who cannot handle
the frosty temperatures or the
lack of sleep that accompanies
studying.
Jacob Zimmerer,
9, said, “Oversized sweaters
are great, for everything!”
2.) High socks with boots: This
gives an instant equestrian feel,
but at the same time, they can
transform an outfit to be chic.
1.) Scarves: It is hard to
imagine a world that exists
without scarves. They are a staple
item in every girl’s closet and can
up any outfit to the nines. Hayley
Flutz, 10, gave her opinion by
saying, “Scarves are the bomb!”
out on top.
4. iPhone 5 - Apple’s new
product, iPhone 5, has a new
iPhone design that people could
not get enough of. Coming out
in September, it was marked as
one of Apple’s highest demand
products. It is 18% lighter and
20% thinner than previous
iPhones.
3. London Summer Olympics
- Over 10,500 athletes traveled
to London this summer for the
Olympics. They all competed for
over 302 gold medals. The United
States always came out as one
of the top countries, and it was
very entertaining to watch such
impressing performances done by
the super athletes.
2. Sandy Hook - Sandy
Hook Elementary in Newtown,
Connecticut experienced a tragic
and terrible event on Dec. 14th,
2012. 20 year old Adam Lanza
went into the school with a high
powered rifle for no specific
reason found yet. He then killed
20 students and 6 staff members.
This is now known as the second
Devastating Hurricane Sandy

worst school massacre in history.
1. Hurricane Sandy -Hurricane
Sandy was recorded and the
second most costliest super storm
after Hurricane Katrina in 2005.
Sandy killed 195 people and
slammed the East Coast with
high winds and high waters.
New York and New Jersey had
the most damage from the storm.
The rains from the hurricane even
affected Wadsworth, Ohio. A
calamity day was necessary due
to the inclimate weather. It was
Wadsworth’s first Hurrican Day
in the school’s history.
“On my Hurricane Day, I
enjoyed myself by laying around
the house and later that day
going to my cheer practice,” said
sophomore Jami Toth. “It was a
very relaxing day.”
Overall, the year 2012 was
very eventful. There were many
positives in the year, but what
comes with that is many tragedies.
Hopefully the year 2013 will be
very healthy and happy year.
7)
Microsoft
Surface:
Another big surprise this year
was Microsoft. One of the few
tablet-laptops, the Surface runs
Windows RT and even has a
detachable keyboard. With a
10.8” screen you’ll be able to
enjoy movies,games, books and
more in a bigger scale.
6) Samsung Galaxy Note
10.1: The Note 10.1 was praised
for its versatility, fast processor,
writing interface, expandable
memory and quality camera and
described as a worthy challenger
to the iPad, also including extra
features like the S-Pen.
5) iPad Mini: In this year’s
keynote Apple unveiled an
smaller, thinner device that
would compete against other
7” tablets on the market. They
called it “iPad Mini”. While
overall it’s a great tablet, it lacks
a retina display, which may be a
big downfall given that there are
other tablets with better screen
resolutions by far.
4) Samsung Galaxy S3:
Definitely one of the top phones
this year, the Galaxy S3 proved
to be a customer favorite selling
over 30 million devices since
its release! Offering a dualcore 1.5 GHz processor, this is
one of the fastest phones in the
market. Along with the iPhone
5, the Galaxy s3 was among the
top phones this year. It is really
difficult to decide which phone
is better because it all comes
down to the user’s preference.
3) iPhone 5: The most
anticipated phone this year was
unveiled on Sept. 21, 2012, and
it sure did not disappoint. It
was Engineered with a newer
chip, a larger screen, and an
Apple A6 processor, making it
significantly faster and more
efficient. With the new body
made out of liquid metal, it
promised to be more resistant.
Even though most users were
satisfied with this device, some
users would have liked a wider
screen and a different design.
The Chief editor of “Trusted
Reviews” states: “The move
indicates that sales of the new
iPhone haven’t been as strong as
previously anticipated”
2) Samsung Galaxy Note
2: The Samsung Galaxy Note
surprised us in 2011 by being the
first “phablet”- A combination
between a phone and a tablet.
Then, in 2012, the Note 2 was
released. It has a gorgeous
5.55 inch HD super AMOLED
display with a resolution of 1280
x 720 that is perfect for movies,
games and reading. It has an
amazing speed of 2GiB! It also
includes other nifty features like
the S- pen, that makes you feel
you are writing on paper.
1) iPad 4: The best gadget
of 2012 is definitely the iPad,
the best selling tablet of all time.
Even though there are no major
changes in design, we did see
some improvements regarding
speed and an amazing retina
display. The iPad has proven to
be a customer favorite and this
year is no different. Even though
its price is high, it is worth every
penny, and guaranteed to bring
an amazing experience.
As Albert Einstein once
said:“It has become appallingly
obvious that our technology has
exceeded our humanity.”
2012 marked a year of great
progress for technology, and
no doubt 2013 will have even
bigger and better in store.

Sandy Hook school shooting
headlines top impact stories of 2012
BY SARAH BERGER,
ERICA HANTZsCHE, AND
HANNAH NEFF
2012 was full of moments that
shocked and amazed the world.
Even though there were ups and
downs, it was a year to remember.
Sandy Hook Shooting
The shooting at Sandy Hook
Elementary
in
Newtown,
Connecticut
is
the
most
memorable moment of 2012.
On Dec. 14 Adam Lanza, in
possession of a semi-automatic
rifle, took the lives of 27 innocent
people: 20 children, 6 staff
members and his mother.
This tragic event captivated
and saddened the nation beyond
belief. Everyone came together in
support of the victims, including
neighboring community Monroe.
Monroe donated its old middle
school for Sandy Hook teachers
and students to return to school
on January 3rd.
The shooting sparked an
ongoing debate on gun control
in the United States. President
Obama is supporting the passage
of new legislation that would
restrict citizen access to certain
firearms.
No matter what happens
in the future, the victims and
their families will always be
remembered.
End of the World
On Dec. 22, the world
woke up to realize they had
just been punked. Everything
that
the
Mayans
had
predicted would happen on
the preceding day was a lie.
Relief spread across the planet
as people realized they had
lived through the supposed end
of the world. Then shame set
in as millions of cautious men
and women crawled out of their
bunkers and basements to see a
world not destroyed.
Good one Mayans.
Kony 2012
The Kony 2012 campaign took
the world by storm early last year.
The 30 minute video aimed at
making Kony famous, so people
would be aware of his evil plan
to create a child army. It became
the fastest growing viral video of
all time.
People tweeted the hashtags
“#kony2012” and “#stopkony”
and it evolved into a frenzy. It
soon died down after the man
behind it was caught running
nude through public places and
all of his credibility was therefore
lost.
Death of the Twinkie
my year as an exchange student
BY CAROLIN WERNER
As I sit here in my room,
trying to focus on writing an
article for The Bruin, a picture
of me and my American
friends keeps distracting me.
Have you ever heard of the quote
“A picture is worth more than a
thousand words?” That quote has
been influencing my life for the
past eight months, the time since
I have been back in Germany.
My name is Carolin Werner,
17, and I was a German exchange
student at Wadsworth High
School during the 2011–2012
school year. In other words, that
was when the new school was
not built, when the seniors were
only juniors, and when I was
still attending WHS as one of the
four foreign exchange students.
The questions I have been
asked the most: “What is different
about Germany?” and “Why
did you come to Wadsworth?”
The last question always makes
me laugh, but the answer to
the first one is everything.
Almost everything about life in
Europe is different. Right when I
got home, I had trouble speaking
my own language due to the
American slang words overtaking
my vocabulary. I was lucky to
have such good friends and family
that welcomed me as if I was
never gone. In fact the year abroad
strengthened my relationship to
my parents and friends because
we learned to miss each other.
The thing I was worried about
most when I got home, was
school. I missed my junior year,
and I did not know how I was
going to survive 12 classes and 5
hour exams in each one of them.
By studying a lot and giving up
my social life for quite a bit, I
caught up on everything and I am
now ready for school to be over.
Another thing I miss about
American school is the school
spirit and the sports that were
offered and practiced on a daily
basis after school. I never ran
before in my life, but by joining
the cross country team and having
a coach that got the best out of
all of us, I started to love running
and I am still running every day.
Now when I take a look back
at the picture sitting next to me, it
reminds me of all those memories
I made. The picture of me and
my American friends tells me
a story about the best time of
my life, my American dream,
and the time I will never forget.
As the end of high school
comes closer, I am starting to
think more and more about
college and where life will take
me. I hope to study a semester
abroad in the USA because after
making
amazing
memories
during my exchange year, I am
ready to take on every challenge.
Looking back, I loved staying
at WHS because it made my year
unforgettable. I gained so many
experiences and a lot of friends I
am still in contact with. Thanks
again to everyone for making last
year the best and most exciting
time that changed my life!

Kim, Kanye anticipate
first child as co u p le
BY BROOKE FICK
A new year brings a new
baby!
The
famous
singer,
Kanye West and the actress
from Keeping Up with the
Kardashians, Kim Kardashian,
are expecting a baby together
in the near future.
Although it was months after
Kim filed for divorce with Kris
Humphries, the couple seems
to be very excited about the
news.
Kardashian and West are
now being publicly known
as Kimye. They are already
planning their future together.
“Kim Kardashian and Kanye
West are in talks to purchase
an $11 million Bel Air home,”
HuffPost Los Angeles reported.
Although Kardashian has
been dating West for five
months, she is still legally
married. Because she can’t
marry West at this very second,
the couple has other ideas.
They decided they will have a
ring ceremony in Malibu. They
are not putting the rings on
their wedding fingers.
“I think it is horrible that
Kim is having a baby with
Kanye even though she is still
married. They should have
waited until she was divorced,”
said Kelsie Wenger, 11
Even though the baby is
due in July, they have already
decided that the baby will not
be featured on TV. The whole
family thought it was for the
best.
Many paparazzi are offering
Kimye millions of dollars for
pictures of the baby. It has
been said that if they take the
money, it could make them
look selfish, and therefore ruin
Kim’s business at Dash.
“What I have learned in life
is - I was always such a planner
and... you think your life is
going to be a certain way, and
the best surprises just happen
when you do not plan,” said
Kardashian on the Today Show.
Kardashian had fertility
issues, so it is a miracle that
she is pregnant.
“I think Kim and Kanye
will last. They both seem to
have gone through some very
rough times and, I bet they will
eventually get married,” said
Ellie Surratt, 11.
Many
people
think
Kardashian
and
West’s
relationship will be just like
their past: complicated. Only
time will tell.

New season of American Idol begins with bang
BY RYAN LANDOLPH
American Idol is back on
television, premiering its twelfth
season as a program. New judges
Nicki Minaj and Mariah Carey
were involved in an altercation
in Pasadena, CA. even before the
show was set to air.
On Oct. 2, Minaj apparently
cursed out and threatened to
“knock out” Carey. The reasoning
behind the decision by Minaj was
because Carey had been taking
shots at her.
Later that month, Carey told
Barbara Walters in an interview
that Minaj had threatened to shoot
her; Minaj responded with laughs.
Even though the comments were
brutal, they were unable to be
verified.
However, on Jan. 8, all of
this was changed. Fox reality
chief Mike Darnell was able to
comment on the validity of the
feud.
“It is authentic. There is a
passion in this group. They
disagree a lot on talent,” said
Darnell.
“I do not think that this is
good for the show because it is
taking away from the real reason
everyone watches Idol: to see the
great performances night after
night,” said Emily Perebzak, 9.
After Darnell confirmed the
feud, a critic then asked Minaj
and Carey to say one nice thing to
each other. Even though it was a
difficult task, it was very easy for
Minaj. On the other side, it was
much harder for Carey to come
up with a nice comment to say to
Minaj.
Since being forced to make nice
comments to each other, the judges
have made up. Some believe they
may be acting nice toward each
other in a publicity stunt.
Darnell does not believe that it
will be a distraction for the team.
“This panel has reinvigorated
the show. It is very tough to get
through to Hollywood...there are
too many shows on the air like this
and they are all taking each other
down a little bit,” said Darnell.
He continued to add that Idol is
the only one singing competition

microscope with their latest feud. Judges Randy Jackson (left), Keith Urban
(right), and host Ryan Secrest (middle) are also pictured.
The other two members of
the team, Randy Jackson and
Keith Urban have also had their
disagreements as well.
“Keith Urban and Randy
Jackson have moments as well,”
said producer Nigel Lythgoe.
“I wish that they would not
focus on the guys too much
because cat fights are so much
more entertaining,” said Luke
Swanson, 11.
Despite all of the feuding,
shows that is making stars.
Jared Greissing, 11, does not
believe that Idol is the only show
making stars because there are
much more entertaining shows
that people perform on.
The show officially made its
season premier on Jan. 16. Once
the previously recorded shows
have been aired, it will be left up
to America to decide if the feuds
are truly as intense as they have
been described.

THE BRUIN
Health and Fitness for the New Year
BY REBECCA ADAMS AND
STEPHANIE HERRON
The fresh start of 2013 offers a
renewed opportunity to set goals,
make changes and evaluate past
mistakes as a way of building
upon them. While many will
choose to continue inadequately
wholesome lifestyles, taking
simple steps toward redirecting
one’s life could be the difference
to making 2013 great.
With a new year, new ways to
exercise and eat healthy will keep
even the beginners energized and
motivated.
Whether the individual focus is
on stamina or sugar intake, there
is an unlimited number of ways
to begin a new, active life. Using
up-to-date strategies in the key
areas of exercise, routine, food
and motivation will keep one’s
overall well-being focused and in
shape.
This will be the year to keep
resolutions, and it is the perfect
time to start living an improved
lifestyle.

Exercise does not have to be traditional
The many trendy, miracle
weight loss programs are
exaggerated at best, according
to Oregon State University
researcher Melinda Manore. Her
review of the 2.4 billion dollar
weight loss supplement pill
industry
demonstrated
that altering one’s diet
and daily exercise routine
is the only way for most
people to lose weight and
get in shape.
Health professionals are now
recommending exercise routines
that maintain interest while
working a wide range of muscle
groups to reinvent the standard
workout.
These contemporary workouts
range from the classic, yet
efficient bodyweight training, to
the upbeat high-energy dance
workout, to unconventional, yet
versatile fusion workouts.
Bodyweight training provides
a variety of different exercises.
Push-ups, planks and crunches
might seem dull to many, but
with the correct routine for
one’s body type, the results they
produce can push one’s body to
maximum performance.
For those who desire a more
exciting routine, dance workouts
like Zumba or Pure Barre
help strengthen one’s
cardiovascular
system
while burning hundreds
of calories.
Fusion workouts, or
training that merges two
separate exercise disciplines, are
increasing in popularity. The
purpose of these hybrid workouts
is to increase one’s overall fitness
while changing up the usual,
traditional workouts.
Aerial yoga, a combination
of Pilates and boxing called
Piloxing, and bicycle karaoke
classes are just a few of the options
fusion fitness has to offer. The
target areas of balance, strength,
stability, agility, and endurance,
which
fusion
exercising
emphasizes, can rejuvenate one’s
lackluster workout.
“My favorite healthy
foods are clementines,
strawberries, and
avocados.”
-Jessica White, 12
Foods that fortify and maintain energy
There are multiple extreme
diets that claim to assist in losing
weight and getting in shape.
However, the most effective diet
may be just a simple resolution
to cut back on fats and sugars, or
to eat more fruits and vegetables.
Instead of experimenting in an
extreme, short-term diet, finding
a few ways to improve one’s diet
may lead to greater satisfaction
over a lifetime.
“Start slow and make changes
to your eating habits over time.
Trying to make your diet healthy
overnight isn’t realistic or smart,”
said Jeanne Segal, Ph.D. dietician.
The most basic, yet most
effective, way to begin reforming
a diet is to fill up on fruits and
vegetables. Choices such as
broccoli, spinach, sweet
potatoes, red peppers,
blueberries, Asian pears
and apples will go a long
way in ensuring a balanced
diet with all the necessary
vitamins and proteins. In general,
eating greens and other colorful
vegetables brings great benefit.
Among the best foods to eat
regularly are eggs and fat-free
milk. These two foods provide
all the necessary proteins and
calcium, as well as other hard-toget essentials that fortify the body
against disease and injury.
Whole grains and other healthy
carbohydrates provide long
lasting energy for sustenance
through the day. In contrast,
sugary foods give only an initial
boost of energy that quickly
wears off.
The method of eating has
as much of an impact as what
is eaten. Segal suggested to
avoid eating at night to give the
digestive system a break.
“Early studies suggest that this
simple dietary adjustment
may help to regulate
weight,” she said.
Eating breakfast in
the morning jump-starts
metabolism and provides
energy for the rest of the day.
These simple diet changes,
taken in small steps, will lead to
a more satisfactory life.
“I have three kids that I
need to keep up with. I need to
stay healthy for them. My resolution
is to continue exercising daily because
it is critical for me to stay healthymentally and physically.”
- Mrs. MacDowell

Routines tailored for best results
According to Michael R.
Bracko, Doctor of Education,
and chairman of the
American
College
of Sports Medicine’s
Consumer Information
Committee,
“Exercise
is the magic pill…[it] can
literally cure diseases…help
people prevent or recover from
some forms of cancer…help
people with arthritis…[and]
help people prevent and reverse
depression.”
With such extensive impacts,
developing a routine to exercise
is the first step to maintaining
one’s New Year’s resolutions.
A researched routine should
be chosen specifically for one’s
current health, and it should
consider the goals one has for
his or her body. For example, a
beginner male or female
with the goal of building
muscle should follow
a routine that invovles
squats, shoulder presses,
and barbell bench presses, as
well as many other exercises.
However, drastic results cannot
be expected immediately, as time
and repetition are significant
factors in any successful
routine.
Many search engines and
online magazines offer examples
of routines for a variety of body
types, but one should always
consult his or her doctor before
beginning any new strenuous
activities.
Motivation is key
The first step in achieving a goal
is always to desire to succeed, but
good intentions will only go so
far. A plan to achieve that goal,
and a lot of motivation along the
way, are essential.
Darlene Lancer, therapist,
suggests that people trying to
change a habit should look for
support from their friends and
family.
Large resolutions are also easier
to conquer when they are broken
down into attainable pieces. A
plan that focuses on one step at a
time is a foolproof way to achieve
that goal.
The rewards for following
through with healthy resolutions
are certain to bring great benefits
to your body, mind and spirit.

The Fantasy Teacher League continues into the month of January. This month’s teacher
battle features Mr. Sean Flaherty and Mr. John Yaggi. It was a tough decision, and it took
quite a lot of thought. Both of these wonderful teachers teach important subjects. Yaggi
with Social Studies and Flaherty with English, but only one can come out on top. This
month’s winner is Yaggi. His dedication towards his students gave him the extra edge. Next
month’s match up is between Mr. Jason Jurey and Mrs. Leslie North for the semi-finals.

Grateful Mission adventure
humbles students’ hearts

The church congregation welcomes us Americans by thanking us and singing a

I am grateful for the

while families can’t even
flush their toilets.
I am grateful for the car

I am grateful for all

while
many
families
barely live off two each
day.
I am grateful for the
many different articles of
clothing I have, while kids
have the same five outfits
for years.
I am grateful for the

I’m grateful for this

just to have the things I

The first day on the work site; working in the scorching sun.
Shocking reality of
so-called paradise
BY ALLY MALKOWSKI
When visitors think of Cancun,
Mexico, their instant thought is
paradise beaches and fabulous
resorts. That was my initial
thought when I always heard the
word Cancun, but that outlook
of the city completely changed
when I arrived in Mexico for a
mission trip.
From walking to the bus stop
every morning from our hotel,
I was able to see the amount of
poverty existing in the downtown
area. Many people make their
day’s living off of small stands
where they sell many assorted
items. Majority of the people take
the bus or a taxi to work because
they either cannot afford a car or
do not want to drive in the hectic
traffic.
Walking down the street to our
work site, it gave me a glimpse of
how people truly live down there.
I realized at that moment how
great I have it here in America,
a first-world nation. The houses
are rundown and most of them
appear to look like a box with
little room in them. There is a
lot of trash sitting in their yards,
and even in the houses. The
family we worked with at the
site actually lived in the church,
which is also a box room. They
sleep on air mattresses nightly
and the babies sleep in a crib with
only three sides.
Seeing the church for the first
time, it definitely was not the ideal
American church. It was about the
size of a garage, and had a bench
in the back for people to sit on.
Even though their church is not
filled with pews and baptistries,
that does not change their outlook
on God and the work He is doing
in them through them for the
church.
Even with all these difficulties
the people down in Mexico are
faced with daily, they become
more and more grateful every
day for each little thing they
have. They are happy to have a
roof over their head and a toilet
to go to the bathroom on. The
community of people who go to
Cristo de Igelsia know that they
will always have each other and
God with them, even if that is all
they have at the end of the day.
From being able to go on this
trip, it really stood out to me how
much I, and we Americans as
a whole, take for granted every
day. We are all so blessed with
everything we have and do not
take a moment to look around and
see every blessing God has given
us. Take a moment to reflect and
realize how fortunate you are.

Top five
BY MAGGIE WILLIAMS
When the opportunity presented
itself for Ally Malkowski, 12, and
myself Maggie Williams, 12, to
volunteer on a mission trip to
Cancun, Mexico, we had no idea
what we were in for.
When Jan. 12 finally rolled
around, we had butterflies in our
stomachs about meeting new
people, but we went down with
open minds and willing hearts.
When we first set foot on the
church’s soil, it was when we
went to their church service that
Sunday night after we arrived. It
amazed me to see how grateful
they were for us showing up.
Even though they only have
maybe 20 members attend, they
welcome all and are blessed with
the number that they have.
While down there, we learned
about how much poverty people
are in. The men who took charge
of the church are men who have
their own families and can hardly
keep up with everything that they
need. Israel Sr., has a wife Julia,
and two children, Israel Jr. and
Britani. He works from 5 a.m. to
5 p.m.. at a local hotel restaurant,
and still puts his remaining time
in helping build the church. Gus
has a wife Wendy, and two girls,
Salonge and Angela. Gus has
just recently been laid off and
has nothing to support his family
with. Having these hardships,
both families act like nothing is
wrong, are fine with what they
have, and never complain about
their life.
With the little money Gus and
his family have, they started
living at the church. Which right
now, is a small room with concrete
floors. Having two daughters
under the age of two, our group
decided that was wrong and we
took up a love offering to pay for
a years rent for his family. We
ended up collecting 1,700 dollars,
which we used 1,200 dollars to
pay for their rent, then split the
rest between the two families.
They were overwhelmed with
joy and thankfulness; it was very
heartwarming to see that by us
using the money that we really
could go without, can make
someone else’s life easier.
Throughout the week, Ally and
I learned an abundant amount
about the culture, the process
of construction and even about
ourselves. We were in awe by the
fact that we have so much and they
have so little. It really made us
step back and count our blessings.
Not only were we shocked by the
love they had for the church, but
for the love they showed to us.
We became extremely close with
the kids that were there. It was
amazing that we did not speak the
same language as them, and they
clung to us like we have known
them our whole life.
Debbie Covert, a member of
the team stated, “We do not come
back thinking that we are great
for all the work we have done; we
actually come back ashamed of
ourselves because we complain
about how we do not have what
we want, but the people down
here have absolutely nothing and
are content and happy.”
This trip was a real eye opener
for Ally and I. We could both
agree that we are extremely
fortunate for the country we live
in and the life we have. All we
can do is thank God and go out
and spread His love and continue
to count our blessings.
