The Skeletal System

The Skeletal System
5 Functions of the Skeletal System:
• Shape and Support
• Movement
• Protection of internal organs
• Production of blood cells
• Storage of vitamins & minerals
The backbone or vertebral column
is the center of the skeleton.
The backbone is
made up of 26
small bones
called
vertebrae.
Parts of the Bone
• Compact Bone
• Spongy Bone
• Bone Marrow
• Peristeum
(Outer Membrane)
The spaces in bone
contain a soft
connective tissue
called marrow. The
job of the bone
marrow is to make
blood cells.
Cartilage
• connective tissue that is more
flexible than bone.
Joints
• places in the
body where
two bones
come together.
Immovable joints connect bones in a
way that allow little or no
movement.
Moveable joints allow the body to
make a wide range of movement.
There are 4 types of moveable joints:
Ball-and-socket
Hinge
Gliding
Pivot
Ball–and–Socket Joint
• allows the widest
range of motion.
• shoulder and hip
are examples.
Hinge Joint
• allows movement
in one plane.
• knee and elbow
are examples.
Gliding Joints
• provides sliding
movement.
• ankle and wrist are
examples.
Pivot Joints
• allows rotation.
• the neck is an
example.
Ligaments
• strong connective tissue that
hold bones together
Note: ACL tear is a
common injury for
football and
basketball players.
Why ?
Osteoporosis is a condition in which
the body’s bones become weak &
break easily.
