THE OFFICIAL USC RING—
A SYMBOL OF ACHIEVEMENT
Each signet ring symbolically captures USC’s distinctive traits. The
top of the ring features the official University seal inscribed with
the words of the Latin poet Ovid, Emollit Mores Nec Sinit Esse
Feros. Translated, the motto says, “Learning humanizes character
and does not permit it to be cruel.” Beneath the words stand the
figures of Minerva, Goddess of Wisdom, and Liberty. Together, the
words and image remind us that a university education builds not
only intellect, but also character.
