opportunities for HPS students. Information is posted
at www.hpsk12.net/district/foundation.
You may have seen or heard the terms “balanced calendar” or
“traditional calendar” when checking our district’s calendar or
while attending a district meeting. Confused? One key thing to
remember: All students in the Holt-Dimondale School District
have the same number of school days each year.
Students on what we refer to as a “traditional calendar” attend
what is generally thought of as a customary school year: students
begin school the day after Labor Day, have a winter break in
December, a spring break in April, and end the year early in June.
(There are also several other non-school days throughout the year,
such as Thanksgiving, President’s Day and Memorial Day.)
Two of our elementary buildings, Horizon and Sycamore, operate
on a “balanced calendar.” You may have heard this referred to
as a “year-round calendar” in the past, but “balanced calendar”
more accurately describes this type of schedule. Students begin
the school year in early August, have a fall break in September or
October, the traditional winter break in December, a mid-winter
break in February, and a longer spring break in April, ending the
school year near the end of June (along with several other nonschool days throughout the year). After a six-week break in the
summer, our “balanced calendar” students return to school.
Information for both calendars is always available on our District
website at www.hpsk12.net.
School Bus Information
If your family lives in a designated school bus area, you
can expect to receive the 2014-15 bus schedule in the mail
approximately two weeks prior to the first day of school. A
friendly reminder from our transportation staff:
•
•
•
•
3
Please be at your assigned bus stop at least five minutes
ahead of time
Parents or guardians are responsible for seeing children
safely to and from the assigned bus stop
Bus stops are established in accordance with requirements
of the law
Please review bus rules and expectations (included in
your mailing), especially the three primary rules:
www.hpsk12.net
1. Sit in your seat, facing forward
2. Keep hands, body parts and personal belongings to
yourself 3. Obey the bus driver at all times!
And don’t forget: A driver who fails to stop for a school bus
or disobeys a school crossing guard is subject to three points
being posted to his/her driving record and a substantial fine.
Are you the parent of a teen-age driver? Please take a minute
to review the law (Michigan Vehicle Code 257.682) regarding
school bus lights as a reminder to you and your student driver.
Our Transportation Department can be reached at

Success Begins in Holt: Duane Spitz
You may have seen Duane
Spitz running around Holt.
Literally running around Holt.
At the age of 65, Duane still
runs an average of 80 miles
per week. This long-time
fitness commitment began
when he was 15 years old, and
is the same dedication he gives
to each part of his life.
In the years after he began
running, Duane moved his
family to Holt, graduated
from the Holt Adult Education
Program (“I remember those last two teachers, Katha Heinze
and Bill Savage”), became a part of Holt Public Schools’
custodial staff, and raised his two children. Daughter Dr.
Brandy Cook is an ophthalmologist in the St. Johns area, and
son Travis is a sterile processor employed by McLaren Health
Care in Lansing.
After taking care of our buildings for 26 years, Duane retired
from Holt Public Schools during the 2013-14 school year. His
wife, Deborah, also a member of our school custodial staff,
joined him in retirement during the summer.
Wilcox Elementary principal Traci Heuhs warmly remembers
the years Duane was assigned to Wilcox. “I thank everyone
on our custodial and maintenance staff…but Duane is extra
special. The years he spent at Wilcox Elementary were
delightful. Not only did our building and grounds shine, but he
was such a great role model to everyone, adults and students
alike. He was the employee who came to work every day with
a professional attitude, was kind and respectful to everyone,
and had a work ethic I wish I could ‘cut and paste’ onto every
student.”
We wish Duane and his wife Debbie a happy retirement!

Michigan Fitness
Foundation Grant
“We are proud of our work, and proud to receive the grant. Being the only
district in Michigan to receive this funding not only makes us a ‘showcase,’
but includes the ability and responsibility to carry on what we know is good
for kids: Teach independence, wellness training, and maintain safe ways to
incorporate physical fitness.”
You can hear the excitement and dedication to kids in David Hornak’s voice. As
principal of Horizon Elementary, Mr. Hornak has always focused on keeping
kids healthy. The $25,000 grant awarded
to Holt Public Schools under the auspices
of the Michigan Fitness Foundation
(the umbrella organization for the Safe
Routes to Schools and Walking School
Bus programs) will allow the district to
have remote “drop locations” for grades
K-8 beginning in the 2014-15 school
year. A way of encouraging students to walk for exercise, remote drop locations
are designated areas where students meet and walk to school as a group. For
example, students attending Hope or Elliott schools can be dropped off at the
Sam Corey Senior Center on Cedar Street and will then walk together to school.
Information on drop locations and times will be provided by your student’s
school.
The grant funding allows the district to update signage, provide incentives
to the students, and provide a coordinator in each building (grades K-8). It is
hoped additional adult volunteers will assist and work with each coordinator.
To volunteer or for more information about this program, please contact our
District Walking School Bus Coordinator, Jennifer Miller, at jennifer.miller@

the interest form does not guarantee that your child will receive a
spot in the program. Rather, it is purely a form that will be used to
determine whether or not you qualify for the program. Please note
that this same form is being used to verify if families qualify for
Head Start. Therefore, only a single form needs to be submitted if
you are interested in both programs, regardless of where you reside
within the Ingham County family of schools. This program is
licensed by the Michigan Dept. of Human Services and funded by a
grant from the State of Michigan Dept. of Education in conjunction
with the Ingham ISD.

A Publication of Holt Public Schools
March on!
Thank you to our Holt High School marching band! Those
stellar performances come after hours of hard work.
Each August, members of the band begin preparation with
a week of band camp with marching practice and music
rehearsals morning through evening. Combined with their
other summer rehearsals, this adds up to more than 60 hours
of practice time! Practice makes perfect, and those extra
rehearsals continue throughout the fall football season with an
additional two hours of practice every Wednesday evening.
Band director Mike Emerson extends a special thank you to
members of the Band Boosters organization. Supporting the
band in many ways, Band Boosters’ contributions include:
purchasing raincoats for the band; funding maintenance and
alterations of band uniforms; providing band students with a
dinner every year between the Homecoming parade and the
Homecoming game; and working countless volunteer hours
whenever and wherever needed. Our Band Boosters also host
a spaghetti supper and silent auction every spring, raising
funds and giving all band students in grades six through 12 the
opportunity to perform!
If you aren’t able to catch a band performance at one of our
home football games, you have many other chances
to hear our students perform. Appearances throughout
the year may include Lansing’s Silver Bells in the City, Holt
and Dimondale’s Memorial Day parades, Band Festival, and
Solo & Ensemble Festival, along with numerous concert
performances throughout the school year. (Our band was
invited and performed at Cedar Point in 2013!)
Our jazz band can be heard in many venues during the spring,
including the annual Community Recognition Dinner hosted
by the Holt Education Foundation and the Senior Top Ten
Dinner. More information on scheduled performances for both
band and vocal music can be found on our district’s website
at www.hpsk12.net (choose the “Arts” quick link on the right
side of the home page).
Holt Hall of Fame Dinner
Coming in February 2015, the Holt Hall of Fame Dinner! As the date nears, please watch the
Holt Ram Sports Hall of Fame Facebook page and Holt Public Schools website (www.hpsk12.
net) for more information regarding the date of the dinner and inductees.

Dimondale Elementary
As the 2014-15 school year begins, Dimondale will welcome
principal Mr. Cooper and several other new staff members
who are transitioning from Midway Elementary. The
Dimondale team, with its many new faces, will continue
to make a difference for kids. PBIS (Positive Behavioral
Intervention and Supports) will continue to grow, and the
staff is excited to add a new ASD (autism spectrum disorders)
program. Dimondale is also happy to welcome new students
from Midway, Horizon, and Wilcox. With the continued
strength of the PTO and village business community,
Dimondale is excited to cultivate the community relationships
that support kids’ learning in Bearcat Country.
Elliott Elementary
This year Holt Public Schools will offer a K-4 after-school
program called STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering,
Math and Literacy). The program is supported by a grant
written by building administrators with the support of the
curriculum department and funded by the Ingham ISD. The
allocated funds will be used to purchase more than 80 WeDo
Robotics kits through LEGO® Education. Our district is very
excited to provide this opportunity to its students, and Elliott
looks forward to taking part!
Horizon Elementary
Horizon was awarded a top-level “Gold Award” at the
Michigan Wellness Awards presentation held at Detroit’s
Ford Field this past May! The award was presented at the
Michigan Learning Connection Summit and is part of the
Governor’s Health and Wellness 4 x 4 Plan. The Michigan
Department of Community Health, in collaboration with the
Michigan Department of Education (MDE), the Department
of Agriculture and Rural Development, the United Dairy
Industry of Michigan, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan,
and the Michigan Health and Wellness Education Workgroup,
recognized Michigan’s award-winning schools. Horizon
earned the highest honor, along with four other schools across
the state, for taking an active role in educating our children in
nutrition, physical fitness and gardening, and by providing a
number of wellness enrichment opportunities. These included
an annual 5K race, an annual ski/snowboarding trip, weekly
opportunities to exercise beyond recess and kinetics classes,
initiating the Walking School Bus, developing a remote
drop-off location, starting before-school fitness clubs, and
holding annual Walk and Bike-to-School events. The entire
Horizon staff is honored to receive this award and would love
to thank the amazing families that routinely participate in
wellness activities! 7

Sycamore Elementary
Over the course of this past year in Integrated Arts, Mrs. Ahna
Brown worked closely with the first grade team of Ms. Lise
Martin, Ms. Jessica Fisk and Ms. Monique White to create
arts-integrated learning focused on how students’ thinking
develops. The teachers worked to provide students small
lessons that developed their knowledge and engagement.
Other themes taught were visualization (the picture created
in our minds), story sequence (events in a story), and using
words to create an image. The strategies support reading
comprehension in the classroom. During Integrated Arts classes, the students drew a realistic drawing (something they can actually see) and an opinion
drawing (something they cannot see), then created and acted
out a factual scene and an opinion scene. This learning
supported reading instruction and a deeper level of student
engagement in the classroom. It was a wonderful experience
for the teachers to work together and find new ways to engage
students and enhance the learning in all subject areas.
Wilcox Elementary
Wilcox Elementary students and staff will start off the 201415 school year welcoming new students and families with
a “Wild About Learning” theme. Families will be invited
to a “Welcome Back” open house and ice cream social on
Thursday, September 4, at 6:30 pm. Wilcox Wildcats will
also participate in a wild “Fun Run” fund raiser in the fall and
will work all year on displaying positive behaviors: Be Safe,
Be Responsible, and Be Respectful. At Wilcox, students will
work hard each day to help and encourage one another to do
their very best. We look forward to another successful school
year with our new students and families!
Hope Middle School
Hope 5th and 6th graders became partners with our
community to make a difference! As students celebrated
Service Learning Day, May 23, they experienced volunteering
in the community and the reward that comes with giving
back. You might have seen them at Valhalla Park, Fenner
Nature Center, Holt Schools’ bus garage, the Holt Food Bank,
Sycamore Elementary School, the Give-A-Kid Project, Edru,
Hope School, Ronald McDonald House, Craft Care Homes,
Pasta for Pennies, women’s shelters, Hope Library Project,
A Million Thanks Project, or the Music Discovery Tour. The
goal is for students to learn the value of becoming involved
through volunteer projects and to continue to support their
communities throughout their lives.

Washington Woods Middle School
Washington Woods was proud to highlight the 6th grade
presentation of the musical “Aladdin” by Mrs. Emerson
and her students during the 2013-14 school year. The play
was well-attended and a great success! Our Washington
Woods students were also treated to a visit from former MSU
basketball player Anthony Ianni and his “Relentless Tour”
presentation on autism awareness and bullying. Anthony’s
message was a powerful reminder to all our staff and students
to make sure that all students feel welcome and are treated as
a valuable part of our school community and the Holt Rams
family.
On a final note, a thank you to the 2013-14 6th grade students
for their great leadership over the past two years. The
Washington Woods teachers and staff wish them luck at the
Junior High in 2014-15 and are sure they will continue to have
a positive impact in our schools and community!
Project UNIFY
Thanks to a grant from the Department of Education,
Washington Woods School proudly participated in Project
UNIFY during the 2013-14 school year. Project UNIFY
is an educational program that uses academic and sports
programs to facilitate relationships between general education
and special education students. Managed by teachers Ms.
Valerie Suszko, Ms. Amy Lester, Ms. Renee Sessions and
Ms. Renee Fluke, staff and students took part in many events
together including sporting events, celebrations, a school-wide
A Publication of Holt Public Schools
pep rally, and attendance at an anti-bullying rally hosted by
Lansing Public Schools. Ms. Suszko noted, “The culture of
Washington Woods has changed in such a positive way.”
Junior High School
The 2014-15
school year begins
at the Junior High
with a “Kick-Start
Day” on August
25! Between 9
a.m. and noon
or from 5-8
p.m., students
(along with parents!) in 7th and 8th grade may pick up class
schedules, make changes/updates to emergency contact
information, and pick up other school-related information.
Holt High School
Holt High School North Campus will offer four LCC college
courses during the 2014-15 school year, giving students the
opportunity to take college courses and earn high school and
college credit. This will prepare them for their future college
or career pathways while providing valuable cost savings on
college courses. The incorporation of capstone courses at the
North Campus will also provide seniors with an opportunity to
explore an area of interest and be challenged to develop skills
that will help them to be better prepared for their post-high
school careers. School Closing Information
In the event of a major storm, electrical outage, or other event that could cause
school cancellation, Holt Public Schools will report information to local TV and
radio stations for broadcast.
Holt Public Schools will also use the Skylert Rapid Notification System to notify
families of school closings. Please do NOT call your child’s school office or the
transportation office when you receive such a call. Offices are unable to handle
a large volume of phone calls, or may be closed in the event of an all-day “snow
day” or power outage.
Remember, it is very important that we have your correct contact information
– please view and update phone numbers and e-mail addresses by logging into
Family Access on our website and selecting the “Skylert” link.

Holt Education Foundation
In May, the Holt Education Foundation proudly awarded
its Margaret Livensparger Scholarship to graduating
senior Kristi Harless. Congratulations, Kristi!
Each year, the Holt Education Foundation also awards
mini-grants to teachers and staff in the Holt Public School
District. Applications are accepted in early October
and evaluated by a committee of Education Foundation
board members. Mini-grant awardees are announced
by our very own balloon-carrying “prize patrol,” led by
Superintendent Dr. Scott. Mini-grants fund innovative
projects and programs beyond the scope of state aid
funding. During the 2013-14 school year, the foundation
awarded more than $11,000 in mini-grants. The
competition is tough – so originality and creativity will be
especially important this year!
The Holt Education Foundation raises funds through the
annual football cookout, the Community Recognition
Dinner, and ACT practice workshop/test sessions, as well
as donations from individual and corporate sponsors.
Your donations to the Holt Education Foundation can be
sent c/o Holt Public Schools, 5780 W. Holt Road, Holt

members, will again sponsor RUTH’S RACE 5K Walk/Run on Saturday, October
4, 2014. This event is named for Ruth Pridgeon, an inspirational Hope School sixth
grade teacher and track coach who lost her battle with cancer in May 2010. More
information about RUTH’s RACE will be available on the district website, www.
hpsk12.net.
The H.O.L.T. (“Helping Others Learn Together”) Scholarship Fund is a donorsupported project to help qualifying students in the Holt Public School District

High School Ramparts Journalist Makes History
Off and on over the years, the Detroit Red Wings have hosted
a High School Journalist Day, where journalism students from
across the state are given the opportunity of a lifetime. During
this year’s event, more than 70 students participated in a mock
press conference with four sports journalists, took a tour of the
Joe Lewis Arena and viewed a Red Wings practice from the
stands. After lunch, they were able to meet Red Wings head
coach Mike Babcock and ask questions about his career as a
coach and in sports.
When the day was over, the students were asked to write an
article about the experience. The articles were submitted,
reviewed by a community relations committee, and, for the first
time, a Holt High School student took home the grand prize.
Mallory Weil, a 2014 graduate, will be given the opportunity
to job shadow USA Today sports reporter Kevin Allen at one
of the 2014-15 hockey games. The day will include shadowing
morning skate, having lunch with Kevin and being in the media
press box during the evening game.
Congratulations to Mallory Weil, journalism teacher Amy Clark, and Holt High School for making Holt High School
history!
