Expose your home’s energy thieves
If your home is using too much energy, it’s most likely an
inside job. Instead of calling on Sam Spade or Nancy Drew to
find these energy thieves, check out our online video series,
High Bill Caper. It will turn you into a super sleuth to uncover
these energy wasters.

Seasonal changes
ahead.
Kids, help your parents be
wattsmart this school year
Here are some ideas for what you
can do to save energy, before and
after school:
• It takes a lot of energy to heat
water, so take a shower instead
of a bath and keep it short!
• Turn off lights when leaving a
room – and make sure
electronics are off before you
leave home for the day.
• Unplug cell phone or other
electronic device chargers when
not in use.
Doing these little things each day
add up to less energy used and
more money saved. Set a good
example for your parents!

Windows and doors
Lighting
Simple changes:
Simple changes:
• Set your thermostat to 68°F and lower the
temperature at night and while you’re away
from home. Install a programmable thermostat
to help make these changes automatically.
• Clean or replace filters once a month. This will
help your furnace work more efficiently.
• Drafty windows and doors lose heat to the
outside. Close drapes or install a plastic interior
storm window kit to limit heat loss.
• Weatherstrip exterior doors and caulk around
window frames to help keep heat in.
• Switch out your screens on windows and doors
with storm windows.
Fewer daylight hours mean
more indoor lighting use – which can account for up
to 20 percent of your electricity bill.
Bigger changes:
• High-efficiency heat pumps provide energy-cost
savings and year-round comfort. When you
upgrade your electric heat to an energy-efficient
heat pump, you’ll stay warm in the winter and
cool in the summer, plus reduce heating costs by
up to 50 percent.
• Sealing and insulating your ducts can increase the
efficiency of your heating system. Receive a cash
incentive from Energy Trust of up to $500 for
both sealing and insulating your ducts.
Did you know? Properly air sealing cracks and
openings in your home can significantly reduce
heating and cooling costs, improve comfort and
create a healthier indoor environment.
Bigger changes:
• Heating costs can make up a large percentage
of your energy bill, so adding insulation to your
home’s walls, attic or floors is one of the most
practical things you can do to maximize your
home’s efficiency. Energy Trust’s cash incentive
offers up to $0.30 per square foot for adding
insulation to your home.
• Earn an incentive for installing ENERGY STAR®
qualified high-efficiency windows; which help
reduce condensation and decrease drafts.
Did you know? There are several common types of
insulation – fiberglass, cellulose, rigid foam board and spray
foam – all of which can help you save electricity and money.
Simple changes:
• Consider changing to ENERGY STAR® qualified
light bulbs. By replacing incandescent bulbs with
qualified CFLs you can use up to 75 percent
less energy and save money over the lifetime of
each bulb.
• Add dimmer switches to lights in rooms that
make sense, like dining rooms.
Bigger changes:
• If you are looking at replacing your light® fixtures,
choose fixtures that are ENERGY STAR qualified.
• To take the savings another step further, consider
LEDs, which use even less energy and last up to
five times longer than CFLs.
Did you know? Light bulbs should be judged by the
amount of light they provide (lumens) rather than the
amount of energy they consume (watts). The more
lumens, the brighter the light.
