Rothwell-Osnabruck School March 2011

Rothwell-Osnabruck School
March 2011
seeking new members to assist with School Council
activities. Please join us in making R-O a great place
for our students to learn.
We remind our families that March Break runs from
March 14th-18th. We wish everyone a safe and
enjoyable week.
From the Principal’s Desk
March has arrived and we hope that spring weather
will follow very soon. We offer congratulations to
our Senior Boys Basketball team who won the “AA”
S.D.&G.Senior Boys Basketball title earlier in
February. Thanks to coaches Mr. St. Denis and Mr.
Thompson. Way to go boys!
Our secondary drama students will participate in the
Sears Drama Festival on Thursday, March 3rd at
Russell Intermediate/Senior School. The show
starts at 6:00 PM and R-O students are one of the
later acts to perform. We wish our students and
staff advisor Mrs. Grady well!
It is hard to believe that Semester 2 is in full swing
and we are approaching the time for our first report.
Secondary Preliminary Reports will be sent home on
Thursday, March 10th. Also, please mark
Wednesday, March 30th, 6:00-8:00 PM on your
calendar as the evening for Secondary Parent
Teacher Interviews. We continue to place our
interviews strategically at the mid-way point between
Preliminary Reports and the mid-term report card in
order to provide parents the opportunity to check-in
on their child’s progress and support their child prior
to the assignment of mid-term marks. We hope to
see many parents on interview night.
We wish our Primary choir and the R-O Band luck as
they prepare for performances this week at the
Kinsmen Music Festival. Thanks to Mrs. Raycroft for
her work in preparing students for this memorable
experience.
R-O School will be taking over a fundraiser
traditionally managed by School Council. Beginning
shortly after March Break, students will be selling
Muffin and Cookie Dough. All funds raised will be
used to support the purchase of technology such as
SmartBoards and Elmo Document cameras which will
be installed in classrooms in the 7-12 portion of our
building after the upcoming renovations.
School Council continues to meet on the first
Tuesday evening of every month. We are actively

JK/SK – Mrs. A. Perry
March is going to be filled with many exciting learning
opportunities. In writing we are working on always having
capitals at the beginning of sentences, spaces between
our words and periods at the end. JK’s are also
practising their printing skills and working on fine motor
activities to strengthen those skills. In math we will
continue to explore measurement. Students will have
hands on opportunities to measure things in their
environment. In science we will be learning about natural
and human made things in our environment. Have fun
with the new Mr. Teddy take home activity!

Maternity leave as of March Break. I have enjoyed
the time that I have spent with each one of your
children. I will miss them all a great deal. I hope to
return to R.O. next year and will look forward to
seeing how they have grown and changed.
JK/SK – Mrs. E. Carter
This month in Kindergarten, we will begin our fairy
tale unit. We will examine story elements and use
these elements to help us retell the stories that we
read. We will begin to work on visualizing as a
comprehension strategy. We will share our ideas
about our stories through discussion, drama, and
writing. In math, we will learn about Canadian coins
and we will begin to investigate addition and
subtraction through simple problems. Our science
focus this month will lead us to develop problemsolving strategies as we work cooperatively with
various materials to design and construct different
structures.
Grade 2/3—Mrs. H. Eligh
Our Chinese New Year Celebration was a great hit.
The students enjoyed putting on 3 plays, performing
a traditional Lion Dance, and baking fortune cookies
with their own written fortunes! We have also
wrapped up our 3 D figure unit with the students
being able to identify a variety of shapes and
describing the appropriate number of faces, edges,
and vertices. We will be revisiting time, mapping
skills, and word problems this month. For reading and
writing we will be practicing writing and answering
questions, descriptive paragraphs, and creative
writing around our pirate theme. The students will be
creating a Treasure Island Board game, making a 3 D
island, and a book report mobile.
Grade 1 – Mrs. B. Turcotte
This month we are continuing to look at non-fiction
texts and the comprehension strategy
of Questioning. In math we will be adding and
subtracting one and two digit numbers. In science we
will begin a new unit on Energy in Our Lives. Please
continue to read from the Blue Book-in-a-Bag nightly.
Students will also be coming home with Term 2 Star
words in a ziploc baggie. Please study these words
often, so that your child can read and write them
correctly. I am noticing that some of the students
are running low on glue sticks and pencils; can we
please replenish their supply. Have a fantastic March!
Grade 3— Mrs. N. Lalonde
Students have been doing a great job with their
writing challenge! Since our challenge started,
students have written numerous descriptive
paragraphs, using a variety of different sentence
types to make their writing much more interesting.
They have also worked very hard on some procedural
writing pieces. This month we will finish up our
Procedural writing and move onto letter writing.
Students will also be starting a unit on Fractions in
Math. Students will find fractions of a whole, of a
length and of a set. Have a wonderful March Break!
Grade 1/2 –
Mrs. C. McDonell
Grade 4— Mrs. T. MacDonell
This month we will be starting a new element to our
book-in-a-bag program. We will be adding a writing
component to our homework, a letter will be sent
home to outline the expectations. In science we will
continue to focus on simple machines. We are
conducting experiments or building simple machines
weekly. We are focused on the data collection and
recording of these experiments. Any chance that you
have to discuss or point out an example of a simple
machine in an everyday situation would be a benefit
to your child. On a personal note I will be going on
Well March is upon us and spring is in the air!! In
grade four, we are finishing up our Measurement Unit
in Math. We will conclude this unit with a unit test
the first week of March. Please support your child at
home by asking them the time of day on a regular
basis. Our next unit will be on Transformational
Geometry. This unit will include maps and grids and
the ability to move through these grids. We will
continue with our Pulleys and Gears unit in Science
2
and our Medieval Unit in Social Studies. The focus in
Language Arts will be on the Reading Strategy
Transformation/Synthesizing. Our students will
increase their writing abilities by focussing on
paragraph writing this month. I would like to wish all
of my families a Very Safe and Happy March Break!
Gr 6 – Mrs. T. Armstrong
Grade six students had a blast at Ecole de Neige last
week! A great big thank you goes out to Mrs.
Thompson, Mr. Cameron, and Mrs. Davies for
supervising the students and a special thank you goes
to Mme. Killoran for organizing such an amazing trip.
Congratulations to all students for their super
Science projects. The Science Fair was a success
because of your hard work - thank you! This
month, among many other things, students will begin
to look at fractions, decimals, and percents in Math
and will complete their explorers unit in Social
Studies. Have a great month and have a wonderful
March Break!
Grade 5— Mrs. M. Power
Grade 5 will be approaching Weekly Spelling a little
differently than we have up to this point in the year.
Each week the regular spelling package will be sent
home, slightly revised. The final page will be replaced
with a weekly set of sentence expectations, leading
to the development of paragraphs as we work our way
through the term. The package itself will be due, as
usual, on Friday of each week. Since it is becoming
difficult to track some of these packages, i.e. they
are not being handed in on time, I would like parents
to sign each package before it arrives on Friday. I
thank you for your support in this matter, as I
believe we truly need some extra practise in written
work. Math sees us continuing with Graphing and
beginning Measurement and in Social Studies we will
continue with Canadian government. Thank you to all
parents who encouraged work with Science projects.
Enjoy the up-coming March Break!
P/J French
Mme G. Killoran
& Mrs. L. MacMillan
This month, the focus for all grades will be numbers.
While kindergarten students will be learning numbers
from 1 to 10 in French, each grade will be learning
more numbers, up to the grade six students learning
numbers up to 70. Various oral, written and reading
activities as well as interactive activities will focus on
this theme. During March, students are still
continuing various activities based on their respective
AIM plays. Oral and comprehension activities based
on the plays will be completed in the weeks ahead.
Bon congé de mars à tout le monde!
Gr 5/6 – Mr. N. Grady
Firstly, I would like to thank everyone for making the
school science fair such a success. It was great to
see so many original and creative projects. In Math
class, we will be finishing our Measurement unit and
will begin a unit on Transformational Geometry. In
Language Arts class, we will be concluding our Media
Literacy unit by having the students create two types
of advertisements. One ad will be a television
commercial while the other will be a magazine
advertisement. We will also conclude our read-aloud
of Underground to Canada. In groups, students will
be expected to re-enact one of their favourite
scenes from the novel as a Drama assignment. In
Science class, we will begin to learn about electricity
and the conservation of energy. Lastly, I would like
to wish everyone a safe and happy March break!
Keep up the great work and keep smiling!

Interact Club
The Shakespeareans” - otherwise known as Mrs. Hillier and the Interact
Club members raised $215.00 bowling for Big Brothers and Sisters of
Cornwall and District. Rhianna Cleary was our top bowler and a great
time was had by all.
CANFAR campaign:
Interact students sold Dentyne Ice gum during lunch hour to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS.
Since the start of the Have a Heart for CANFAR campaign in 1993, millions of students in every
province and territory have increased awareness about HIV/AIDS and raised funds for AIDS
research. We raised $100 for this worthwhile cause!
National Sweater Day was held on Feb. 17th and students at
Rothwell-Osnabruck took part in Canada’s ongoing efforts to
inspire Canadians in taking simple actions to reduce their
carbon footprint.
The Ugly Sweater Assembly brought students and teachers
together in showcasing their ugliest sweaters. Students won
chocolates for their efforts and thanks go out to the brave
teachers and administrators who wore hideous sweaters for
a great cause!

March is Nutrition Month®!
1-800-818-3679.
Work, commuting, hockey practice, homework, meetings… For
many busy families these days, it may seem harder and harder to
find the time to eat meals together as a family. But there are
plenty of good reasons to find the time for family meals!
According to studies:
Eating family dinners most days of the week has been
linked with overall healthier eating and better nutrition.
*Just a Reminder*
Parents who wish to deliver an item to and/or speak to
their child are requested to report to the main office
where staff will contact the classroom and have the child
sent down to meet them. Thank you for helping us to
ensure school safety and to limit disruptions to your
child’s classroom.
Children who eat family meals eat more fruits and
vegetables, and fewer unhealthy snacks, than kids who eat
separately from their family.
Allergy Alert Update!!!
Food purchased at Bulk Barn is not peanut/nut free so
please do not send bags of these products to school
with your child.
Thank you for keeping our school safe for all students!
We would like to inform you that there are children in our school
with life threatening allergies to peanuts/nuts, as well as scented
products. This is a medical condition (anaphylaxis) that causes
severe reaction to specific foods and scented products. This can
result in death within minutes. As this affects the entire school
community, we are requesting that you not send foods or items
noted as potential hazards to school with your child.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or
school administration.
Children who eat with their family tend to do better in
school, and are happier.
Eating together also gives
opportunities for family
communication and promotes a
better family atmosphere,
including giving a sense of
stability and togetherness. It’s
also a great time to pass on the
family cultural traditions!

healthy family meals that aren’t
