Dear Parents,
Kindergarten is the gateway through which your child passes into school life. Its aim is to promote social, emotional,
physical, intellectual growth. This growth can best be accomplished by setting goals for each child. Your child’s
progress will be reported through conferences and report cards. The report cards will indicate progress on the
objectives identified in the Kindergarten curriculum.
Kindergarten provides a learning environment that stimulates curiosity and eagerness for learning. This curriculum
map is designed to guide parents of kindergarten students through this first important year. It provides a glimpse of the
goals for kindergarten students and summarizes the key objectives for each curriculum area.

Philosophy
Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary is committed to maintaining a stimulating, challenging, and nurturing environment that will support and encourage our
GT students to be self-confident individuals who will become responsible and productive citizens. In such an academic climate, students will learn
the skills and acquire the knowledge and attitudes that will assist them in becoming lifelong learners.
Program Goals
To provide an educational program that will enable GT students to develop higher levels of cognitive thinking, analyzing, synthesizing, and in the
evaluation of information.
To provide opportunities for GT students to become creative problem solvers through activities that result in sound decision-making.
To provide an environment in which GT students may challenge and relate to intellectual peers in an academic setting.
To enhance gifted students’ self-concepts and self-understanding in relation to themselves and others.
Identification Process
In order to identify our GT students, an advisory committee consisting of members of the administration and faculty review and make
recommendations based on the information listed below.
1. Teacher/Parent Recommendation. Teacher or parents who are interested in having their student/ child screened for the GT program
should contact the GT Coordinator. A teacher inventory and parent information form may be used to gather more information about the
child. We encourage parents to ONLY pursue a GT screening if there is a reasonable and observable probability that their child is GT.

2. Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). The CogAT assesses a student’s abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal and quantitative
symbols. Eligible students are expected to earn at or above the 90th percentile in the verbal and quantitative subtests to be considered for
the GT program.
3. Grade Point Average/Standards Based Grading. Students should earn and maintain a GPA at or above 3.0 on a 4.0 scale on a traditional
report card or “More than adequate progress” and “Meets with Excellence” on the standards-based report card.
ÿ The GT program at Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary consists of a differentiated language arts curriculum for students in third through
sixth grade. Students will be serviced in their classroom during the language arts period.
ÿ Identified students in third through sixth grades will meet as a small group once a week to work on a team project.
ÿ Identified children will be provided with opportunities for the development of higher level thinking skills, abstract, complex thought
development, and higher mental products. Allowances may be made for in-depth learning of a self-selected topic within the area (s) of
study.
ÿ This program gives GT students the opportunity to explore, reach, and challenge their highest potentials. The instructor’s role in the
program is to act more as a facilitator than a teacher. Creative student problem-solving and brainstorming is encouraged and praised.
This is a project based learning program that allows for and fosters open-ended experiences.
